To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EvERE'rTn FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wesson, in the county of Copiah and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to tools and more particularly to that class of tools that are called wrenches and are used for the purpose of tightening nuts on bolts, etc.
The object of this invention is to provide a wrench which can be readily adjusted to fit the various sizes of nuts on which it is desired to use the same.
A further object is to provide means for securely fastening the parts of the wrench rigidly together so that they will firmly clamp the nut in question.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent as it is more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrates by way of example an embodiment of this invention, Figure 1 represents a view in elevation of a wrench in open position, and embodying this invention. Fig. 2 represents a view in elevation of the wrench in its closed position for holding a nut and with parts broken away to show the construction of the device.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
In the construction, 1 represents the shank of the wrench which is provided with a plurality of V-shaped teeth 2 in the front portion thereof, and with a handle 3 at its inner portion. A pair of plates 4L have each one of their outer corners 5 projecting and rounded as is clearly shown in the drawings and provided with holes 6 therein for the purpose of receiving a rivet 7 or the like in order to hold an inner jaw 8 of the wrench. The inner jaw 8 is provided with a hole 9 therein to permit the easy movement of a stem 10 attached to the outer jaw 11 of the wrench. A plurality of teeth 12 are provided on the inner portion of the stem and arranged to closely engage with the teeth 2 of the shank, when said stem is closed against-the shank 1.
Provided on the inner portion of the stem 10 is a journal member 13 arranged to permit the rotation of a catch 14: therein, the catch 14 being provided with enlarged heads Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 4, 1911.
Patented May 28,1912. Serial No. 658,544.
15 and 16 for the purpose of engaging with the outer sides of the stem and shank and in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 2.. This catch is arranged to clamp said parts together sothat the wrench will be held securely on the nut which its jaws engage with.
17 are rivets or other suitable fastening means for holding plates 4: securely to the shank 1. These plates are sufliciently separated to permit the easy movement of the stem 10 therein, and yet at the same time provide a guiding means therefor.
When it is desired to use the wrench, the catch is undone and the inner portion of the stem drawn away from the shank and then pushed outwardly so that the jaws of the wrench will be separated sufficiently apart to properly engage with the nut or the like to be actuated. It will be noticed that the inner jaw being pivoted will move out slightly so as to prevent any binding action of the same on the stem. The stem 10 is then moved inwardly so that its teeth will engage with the teeth in the shank 1 and thereby prevent any longitudinal movement of the stem and thus prevent the jaws loosening ofi the nut. The heads 15 and 16 of the catch being then moved inwardly to engage and lock the shank and the stem together will prevent any transverse movement of the same and further assist in holding the wrench securely on the nut.
The operation of the other parts of the device being clearly apparent from the drawings, it is not deemed necessary to describe them further, and obviously while there is "shown but one form of this invention in the drawings, it is not necessary to limit this application for Letters Patent to that particular form, or in any other way otherwise than necessitated by the prior art, as many modifications in the construction thereof may be made without departing from the principles thereof, or coming within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described this invention, What is claimed is A wrench comprising in combination a shank having its front portion provided with V-shaped teeth thereon, a plurality of plates rigidly secured to the outer portion of said shank, each of said plates having an outer corner portion projecting outwardly therefrom and provided with a hole therein, an inner jaw having an end portion disposed in said projecting portions, stem for looking said stem and shank t0- means for pivotally holding said jaw to gether, so that the teeth thereof will be held said projecting portions, said jaw being prointo engagement with each other. vided with a hole therein, an outer jaw, a In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my 5 stem, integrally secured to said outer jaw signature in the presence of two witnesses. 15
and provided with a plurality of V-shaped teeth thereon arranged to engage with the EYERETTE FOSTER teeth of said shank, said stem being ar- Witnesses: ranged to actuate within the hole in said WM. H. FOSTER, 10 inner jaw and means rotatably held on said H. S. LEE;
