Application led February 25, 1911.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known thatI, MARK' T. MoLLoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented a newand useful Strainer, of which the following is a` specification.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description.
proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and 1n the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood lthat changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosedcan be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit yof the invention.
In the drawings,-Figure '1 shows the invention in sectional side elevation, the constituent parts of the device being separated; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation showing the parts of the device nested together; and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail enlarged from F ig. 2.
The device forming the subject-matter of ythis application, is adapted to be employed for straining milk, fruit juices and the like, the construction being such that the material is strained as it passes into the containing receptacle.
In r`the drawings, the numeral l denotes a receptacle, the same ordinarily being a pail of the common Haring type. Located within the receptacle 1 is a primary strainer 2, within which is located a secondary strainer 3. The primary strainer 2includes a main ring 4, fitting closely within the receptacle,

inemeshed sieve 6 is secured.y The'upper extremity of the main ring 4 is flexed laterallyan'd outwardly, to form an outwardly progectlng upper flange 7 which preferably 1s parallel to the lower iange 5. The primary strainer 2 further includes a supplemental ring 8, the upper edge of which is rolled outwardly and upwardly to form an upper bead 9, the upper surface of whichv is rounded transversely. The lower edge o-f the supplemental ring 8 is flexed to form a hook-shaped lower bead 10, including an upper wall 11 and a lower flange 12, between which, the upper flange 7 of the main ring 4 is firmly bound. When the primary strainer 2 is mounted in the receptacle 1, the lower wall 12 of the lower bead 10 rests upon the bead 14, with which the receptacle 1 is commonly provided, the bead 14 being reinforced frequently, by a retaining rod 15.
ring 16 is flexed inwardly and upwardly to form a lower flange 17 parallel to the body of the ring 16. The lower edge of the secondary strainer 3 is rounded, as shown at 22, during the formation of the ange 17.
To the upper edge of the fiange 17, the
sieve 18 of the secondary strainer is secured, this sieve being somewhat coarser than the sieve 6 wherewith the primary strainerfis equipped. The upper edge of the ring 18 is rolled outwardly and downwardly to form an upper bead 19, the extremity of which is bound between the body portion of the bead and the ring 16, as clearly shown in the drawings. The lower edge of the bead 19 is rounded as shown at 22, for engagement ywith the vupper bead 9 of the primary strainer.
The invention further includes an auxiliary sieve 21, preferably fashioned from cloth and located between the sieves 18 and 6. The auxiliary sieve 2l is carried across the rounded lower end 22 of the ring 16, and thence extends, as shown at 23 between the members 16 and 8, the auxiliary sieve being bound therebetween, against sagging in its central portion. The periphery of the auxiliary sieve 21 is bound between the beads 19 and 9, as shown at`24.
Owing to the fact that the secondary,y
strainer 3 is rounded at its lower edge as shown at 22, the auxiliary sieve 21 will not i be cut or torn when mounted as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A depression of the auxiliary sieve 21 will be made practically impossible, v
by reason of the fact that the periphery of the auxiliary sieve is bound between the beads 19 and 9. The auxiliary sieve cannot be torn or injured by the beads 19 and 9, by reason of thefact that the contacting faces of these beads are rounded, as clearly shown. `Moreover, since the auxiliary sieve 21 is engaged as shown at 23, between the members 16 and 8, and by reason of the further fact that the auxiliary sieve is bound between the beads 19 and 9, as shown at 24, the auxiliary sieve constitutes a means for preventing the secondary strainer 3 from being wedged tightly in engagement with the supplemental ring 8 of the primary strainer 2.
Then the primary strainer 2 is filled with a slow filtering liquid, there will be a considerable weight imposed upon the secondary strainer 3. The secondary strainer is well adapted to receive such weight, by reason of the unusually strong pail-engaging structure effected by the interlocking of the members 10 and 7.
Should the auxiliary sieve 21 become soiled, the same may be removed readily by lifting the secondary strainer 3 out of the primary strainer 2. During this operation, the primary strainer 2 need not be removed from the receptacle 1, and consequently, during the renewal of the auxiliary sieve 21, the sieve 6 of the primary strainer 2 will remain within the receptacle 1, to constitute a closure therefor.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:-
1. A device of the class described comprising a primary strainer and a secondary strainer fitted in the primary strainer, the strainers being provided, at their upper ends, with interengaging beads, limiting the downward movement of the secondary strainer in the primary strainer; and an auxiliary sieve extended across the bottom of the secondary strainer and bound between the side walls of the strainers, the free edge of the auxiliary sieve being engaged'between the beads.
2. In a device of the class described, a primary 'strainer provided at its upper edge with an outstanding bead; a secondary strainer fitted within the primary strainer and having its upper and lower edges turned in opposite directions, to form a bead at the upper edge of' the secondary strainer for engagement with the bead of the primary strainer, and to form a flange at the bottom of the secondary strainer, lying parallel to the wall of the secondary strainer, the lower edge of the seco-ndary strainer being rounded, in the formation of the flange; a sieve secured to tlie upper edge of the flange; and an auxiliary sieve extended across the rounded lower edge of the secondary strainer, the auxiliary sieve being bound between the strainers, and being periplierally engaged between the beads.
3. In a device of the class described, a primary strainer, including a main ring having at its upper and lower edges, oppositely projecting upper and lower flanges, and a supplemental ring formed at its lower edge wit-h a hook-shaped bead inclosing the upper flange, the hook-shaped bead and said upper flange constituting a shoulder adapted to engage the upper edge of a receptacle; a sieve mounted upon the lower flange; and a secondary strainer located within the supplemental ring, the secondary strainer and the supplemental ring being provided withinterengaging beads, preventing a dropping of the secondary strainer within the primary strainer.
