A further object of the invention is .to provide a slide valve, consisting of telescoped parts, a packing being interposed between said parts, and novel and improved means being provided for expanding the said packing. I
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of theinvention.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 shows the invention in sectional side elevation; Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation; Fig. 3 is a section upon the line A-B of Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is asectional top plan; and Fig. 5 is a sectional end elevation showing a modified form of the invention.
The invention consists of telescoped inner and outer parts, the outer part, in that form of the invention shown in Fig. 1, comprising the body 1 of the valve, within which fits the sleeve 2, the sleeve 2 having a flange,
3, adapted to extend outwardly across the edge of the body 1. The flange 3 is peripherally provided with a friction head 4 which bears against the pressure plate or steam chest cover (not shown).
In the edge of the body 1, and in the adjacent face of the flange 3 of the sleeve 2, elongated seats 5 are formed, in which are seated arcuate springs 6. As will be readily understood, these springs 6 serve to press the sleeve 2 outwardly, to engage with the steam chest cover. In the outer face of the sleeve 2 there is a circumscribing,=superficial groove 7, adapted to receive a packing 8,
preferably formed in four parts, and extended along the four sides of the sleeve 2, arcuate. springs 9 being seated in the grooves 7 to the rear of the packing parts 8, whereby the packing is forced outwardly, for engagement with the inner face of the body 1.
As seen most clearly in Fig. 3, the constituent parts of the packing 8, are beveled, adjacent the corners of the structure, as shown at 10, and between these beveled end faces of the packing parts, is entered, at each corner of the structure, a wedge 11, having a reduced shank or stem, extended toward the center of the sleeve, the shank being denoted by the numeral 12. In the outer face of the sleeve 2, adjacent each corner thereof, is fashioned a primary recess 16, communicating with a secondary recess 14, of considerably less diameterthan the recess 16, the recess 14: extending rearwardly into a fillet 15, formed in the inner portion of the sleeve 2, at the corner thereof. As will be readily understood, the springs 9 serve to thrust the packing 8 outwardly, against the valve body 1, springs 17 serving to enter the edge 11 between the beveled faces 10 of the parts of the packing 8, thereby expanding the packing, and affording a steam tight joint. 7
In Fig. 5 of the drawings, a slightly modified form of the invention is shown. In this form of the invention, the structure hereinbefore described, is adapted for use in connection with an old valve body, altered and modified to carry out the invention. This valve body, constituting the inner member of the valve structure, is denoted by, the numeral 18, and around the valve body 18 fits the sleeve 19, the sleeve 19 constituting the outer of thetelescoped inembers of the" fore, to receive the springs 23, which serve to thrust the sleeve 19 outwardly.
