Letters Patent No. 102,734, dated May 3, 1870; antedatezl March 16, 1870. i
-Qon IMPROVEMENT IN HAND STAMP-CANCELRS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, LIVINGSTON B. VAN KLEEGK, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved 4Stamp-Canceler; and I do hereby declue that the' following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the. art to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
Figure l represents aside elevation, partly in section of my improved stamp-cancelen y Figure 2 is avertical rausverse section of the sume,
--taken in the plane of the line a: .'c, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a detail vertical longitudinal section of the sume, showing a modiiicaton.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a. new` manner of constructing the bed of stamp-cancelers, and consists in making the same sliding, so that it may be forced down by the die, and iu arranginga series of stationary piercing-tools, which are even with the bed, when the same is forced up by the vspring underneath, but which project beyond the bed into depressions or bolsters provided in the under side vof -the die, when the is forced down upon the bed.'
A, in the drawings, represents the fixed bed of a stamp-cancelen of ordinary or suitable construction.
B is the upper hinged-arm of the canceler, carrying a stamping device of suitable construction.
Upon the stationary bed A is seta sliding bed, C,
which hasa shank, a, that fits into astationary v socket, b, as shown, and rests upon a suitable spring, @which keeps the sliding bed C up.
As the die is forced down upon the bed the latter will yield to the shock,`and the apparatus will not be injured. y
D is a pin, or pms, projecting from lthe bed A through the bed C, theirupper ends being flush with the surface of the bed C when the apparatus is undisturbed. But, when the die is forced down upon `the bed C, so that the same will also-be pressed down, the ends of the pins D will enter depressions provided for their reception in the die, as shown, and the paper stamped by the die and bed will, at the same time, be pierced by the pins D.
The pins D may be solid, as in fig. 1, or tubular, as in fig. 3. 'In the latter case the depressions in the die may be omitted.
The pins or tubes D are attached to the bed A in any suitable manner. e
Having thus-described my'invention,
I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent- The piercing-pins or tubes D, when attached to the, stationary bed A of the stamp-canceler, and when fitted through the sliding bed C of the Same, substantially as herein shown and described.
L. B. VAN KLEECK.
