Be 1t known that I, JOHN HUGYIK, a sub ject of the King of Hungary, residing at. Nokomis, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to steps, and the primary object of my invention is to provide yieldable steps that can be advantageously used in connection with passenger cars to prevent burglars from entering the cars.
A further object of this invention is to furnish steps with ejectors that can be 0perated to eject a person from the steps.
I attain the above objects by a device that has been primarily designedfor passenger coaches, the device comprising yieldable steps that can be readily ascended when a passenger coach is not in motion, but when in motion the steps are vibrated to that extent as to render it almost impossible for a person to jump onto and ascend the steps. Besides resorting to the use of yieldable steps for preventing train robbers from jumpin on a train as it leaves a station, I use the 'ejector in connection with each step and should the conductor or brakeman observe a suspicious person upon the steps, the ejectors can be operated to engage the limbs of a person and force the same from the steps whereby the person will be precipitated to the ground.
The invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will. now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of risers 8 that extend downwardly in front of the supports 5. The ends of the treads 7 having guide pins 9 extending into slots 10 provided therefor in the wall 2 and the step frame 3, said pins preventing accidental dis placement of the treads. Pivotally mounted in the end Wall 2 and the step frame 3 by pins or trunnions 11 are inverted L-shaped ejectors 12 corresponding in length to the risers 8. These ejectors are arranged upon the inner edges of the treads 7 and normally engage the risers 8. The inner sides of the ejectors 12 are provided with apertured lugs 13 pivotally connected, as at 15 to an operating lever 16, the lever 16 extending through a slot 17 in the platform 4 and is pivotally connected by a pin 18 to a bearing 19 located upon the platform 4 adjacent to the end wall 2.
By operatingthe lever 16 the ejectors 12 can be shifted to knock or-force a persons feet off of the steps and it will be extremely diflicult for a person to hold on to the car,
when the same is in motion, without any footing. The yieldable steps make it extremely difiicult for a person to ascend the same when a train is in motion and as a.
person has not a sure footing, it is an extremely easy matter to eject the person by operating the lever 16. What I claim is 1. In a railway coach, the combination wit-hthe end wall, platform and step frame of a coach, of tread supports connecting said end wall and said step frame, spring supported yieldable treads carried by said sup ports, ejectors pivotally mounted between said end wall and said step frameabove the rear edges of said treads,-a lever pivotally supported by said platform, and rods pivotally connected to said lever and to said ejectors whereby said ejectors can be 0perated by a movement of said lever.
