This invention relates to tabulating mechanism for typewriting and other machines, and particularly to column stops thereof.
The object is to provide simple and inexpensive means for enabling the machine to be set for different kinds of tabulat-ing work.
In carrying out my invention, there is -a series of column stops, ,each of which is movable ina plane transverse to the rod in which it is mounted into and out of position with respect to the, carriage or rack with which it coperates. These stops are independently` adjustable along the rack. and each is: provided with means for holding it into and out of its effective position.4

These denomination stops are preferably out away at one side or have their uppergends beveled, as Ashown in Fig. 4, so that whemthey are raised into position to cooperate with the column stop they will arrest said column stop midway a stepor' escapement space, whereby, when said stop fl releases the column stop, said column stop will move! thereover so as to be out of the way of thle beveled edge of the stop 4, and permit a second operation thereof, and also whenthe'l carriage is being returned to its home position, t-he stop 4, if it should accidentally be left elevated, will `be pressed down to its lowered position.
Each rod 3 is provided with a shoulder 5 to engage a rack plate 6 mounted. on the frame ofthe machine, whereby, when the rod 3 is raised. plate 6 will be moved back so as to move the. upper end of shaft 7 rearwardly. The upper end ofshaft- 7 carries a pinion 8. which meshes with a rack 9 on the carriage, and said shaft is preferably mounted in a bearing- 10. which is normally held in a' forward position by means of a spring 11. Shaft 17 carries an eseapement wheel 12, which may be of any usual construction.l The lower end of shaft 7 is mounted in a step bearing` 13, in which is a slight playLso as to permit the movement of its upper end.

17 is a rod mounted on the vcarriage adjacent the track member 15, said rod being preferably flattened on its upper face and carrying a scale indicating the space members. Y A' j 1S is a column stop having its rear edge provided with teeth 19 to coperate with the rack teeth 16. The lower edge of this column stop is provided with a beveled projection Q() for cooperating with the stop plate 4.
21 is a handle ar 'anged in the column stop and preferably made hollow so as t-o contain a spring 29., which .A normally operates through a follower 22 upon the fiat face of the. rod 17 to hold the stop in operative position.- When it is desired to adjust the stop longitudinally on the rod 17, the stopV is rocked on the shaft-17 so that the teeth'lt) are moved in a direction transverse the rack 16 and out of engagement t.herewit-h, where by the said stop may be adjust-ed longitudi- -nally on the shaft.
Vhen adjusted to its proper-position, the stop is again rocked on the shaft so as to engage its teeth 19 with the rack. j
I claim:
l. In a tabulating mechanism, the combination of a rod having a flattened portion, column stops mounted to slide upon and oscillate about said rod, said stops comprlsmg a projecting beveled faced member, and a handle member having a spring-pressed follower mounted therein, adapted to engage the flat portion ofthe shaft to retain the stops in position.
2. In a tabulating mechanism, the combination of a rod, a column stop rotatably and slidably mounted upon said rod, and a denominational stop, said column stop being provided with a stop face, a portion of said stop face lying intermediate said denominational stop and Said rod.
3. In a tabulating mechanism, the combination of a carriage and a rack supported thereby, a rod extending along said rack, a column. stop mounted upon said. rod in such manner as to be capable of being oscillated around and slid upon said rod, said column stop being provided with a stop face, a machine yframe upon Which said carriage is mounted, and a stop carried by the machine `frame, the construction and arrangement of parts being suchh that a portion ofthe stop face of the carriage stop is between a portion of said rod and said stop on the machine frame in such manner that pressure exerted on said column stop by means of said stop carried by the machine frame will be delivered directly upon said rod.`
4. In a tabulating mechanism, the combination of a rod, a column stop rotatably and slidably mounted upon said rod, a key operated stop, a stop tace upon said column stop, said stop face extending between said rod and said key operated stop and at right angles to the movement of said key operated stop.
5. In a tabulating mechanism, the combination of a rod, a column stop rotatably and slidably mounted upon said rod, a key operated stop, a stop face upon said column stop, said. stop face extending between said rod and said key operated stop, and a key for moving said key operated stop in a direction substantially at right angles to /said stop face.
