PAPER BAG.
APPLICATION FILED DEG.19, 1911.

JULIA H. BARTLETT, or summons, MARYLAND.-
rnrrm. BAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 19,1911. Serial No, 666,802.
170 all whom a m conc'er'ni Be itknown that I, JULIA H. BARTLETT, of the clty. of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Paper Bags, of which the following is a specification. A
The invention relates to a peculiar construction of the. joint at the bottom of a paper bag, whereby the same. is rendered air andwater tight, as will hereinafter fully appear. p
In the further. description of the said invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof and in which Figure 1 is. a front or face view of the bag as it appears after the ordinary application thereto of the paste used to produce 'thebottom joint, and before the pasted surface is turned up at 0-1) and folded upon the surface of the bag above it. Fig. 2 illustrates a similar view of the lower end of the bag, after the usual fold has been made, and after the outer surface of a portion of the upturned flap has been provided with a coating of paste to prepare the bag for a second folding in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 3 shows the bag after the second fold has been made, and the bottom of the bag completed. Fig. 4: is an enlarged section taken on the broken line ww in Fig. 2 showing the ordinary fold; and Fig.
5 is an enlarged section taken on the broken .line y-y in Fig. 3 illustrating the improved fold.
Referring now to Fig. 1 of the drawing it will be seen that the upper side 1 of the bag, which in the. present case is the side having the longitudinal seam a, is made shorter thanthe lower side 2, except at the lateral edges where for a limited width, the two. sides have a common length, thus pro- The construction as monly in use, and its ob ect is to admlt of the exposure of a narrow strip of the inner surface of the lower side 2 of the bag'to' which paste can be applied, and at the same time prevent as far as 1s posslble, openings being left at the corners b, b when the bag is folded as slTo'wn in 2. It will howdescribed is .com- I ever be seen that in applying paste 'to-the bag as shown by the stipple'd surface-in Fig. 1 and which-surface is generally produced by means of a roller or br'ush, there Patented'May 21, 191 2.
will be no paste underthe ears 3 (see the lower right-hand corner in that figure) and when the ordinary fold'is made, the ears are pasted to the outer surface of the upper side 1 of the bag, but not to the:inner surface of the upt11rned;fiap ;and in consequence, there is produced an; open channel 0 which leads from theint'erior of the bag to the; outer air, as shown inIFig'. 4, through which liquid contents of the bag can escape.
The object of the present "invention isto.
seal the channel 0 and thereby renderthe bag completely water tight at the lower corners, and it consists as" follows: After the ioint as shown in section in Fig. 4 and which exhibits the open channel a, is -com-.
pleted, paste is applied to the outer-surface of the upturned flap, and theend of the bag on the broken linez-z in Fig. 2 which is below the ends of the ears 3 bent'upward and pressed closely in contact with-theloutside of the bag above, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, which serves to close thechannel c and prevent leakage at the lower corners of the bag, which would not be the case should ifzlhefold be made above the edge of the first I claim as my invention:
In a paper bag in a fiat condition, and its outer side having the ears 3 formed'as described, the method of producing a watertightbottom in the bag, which consistsin applying to the lower end ofthe bag and over the ears thereof, a strip of aste of such width as to extend above t e ears,
then folding the pasted portion upon the surface of the bag above it, then applying paste to the outer surface of the upturned flap and folding the bag on a line which is;
below the upper edge of the first flap, and then pressing the second flap closely in contact with the surface of the bag above it.
JULIA H. BARTLETT.
