Astrrox. a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence. in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in ;-\ssembling.\la chilies. of which the following' description, in connection with the accompanying drawings,` is a specification, likereference characters o'nthe drawings indicating like parts i'ntbe several figures.
This invention'relates to machines for assembling parts of boots and shoes.
The presentembodiment of the invention is herein shown as an improvement upon the machine described in aprior application for Letters Patent tiled August 15, 190()7 Serial No. 330,705. It will be understood. however, that the invention is not restricted in all of its features to embodiment in a machine of the particular type described in said application. The machine of said prior application has provision for inserting a fastening in the iear face of a last for the purpose of securing the upper to lthe last. Said fastening is inserted at a point rcinoved from the solefand it is desirable at times to insert it at apoint adjacent to thc cone of the last. It is important that the relative positions of the last, and the mechanismy for inserting said fastening be accurately determined in order that liability of the fastening failing` to enter the last may be prevented. An important feature of the presentinvention accordingly consists in the provision in a machine having mechanism for inserting a fastening in the rear face of a la'st. of meansfor positioning relatively the last and said mechanism to insure opera-tion of said mechanism within the area of said face. Another feature of the present invention accordingly consists in means .for locating the' last in a predetermined position with relation to the wiping mechanism. This positioning is preferably effected before the work is engaged by anyof said parts.

Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral '3 indicates the driving shaft of the machine from which the power-actuated working parts hereinafter referred to are driven. Extending from front to rear of -the'machine isa stem 6, the forward end of which constitutes a rest 8 against which the rear face of the work is brought. The stem 6 is inclined upwardly and forwardly and contains a driver 7 actuated in the manner described in said prior application. The

In the use of the machine shown, thel parts of a boot or shoe having been loosely brought together Aupon a last in the manner indicated for example in said prior application, the last is placed upon the' heel pin 16 and moved rearwardly into working position. In this movement the heel ond of the last. first engages and moves apart the menivbers 32 which have contact with the sides of the last adjacent to the sole. Thesemembers wipe' the upper forwardly as the work is advanced between them and bring the l upper and counter into close relation to the rear face of the last. They also press the ends of the counter inwardly against the sides of the last and hold said ends from displacement during the operation of the inachine. Said members also deflect the sole of the heel end of the last into a predetermined position since they are interconnected for equal movement in opposite directions. ln the further movement of the last into working position the gage 48 is engaged b v the middle 'portion of the last or by that part adjacent to the cone, according to the adjustment which may be given the stem 6, and deflects this portion into acentral position with relation to the' notch formed in the gage.
