PORTABLE GEARED ROTARY TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Geared Rotary Tools; and I do declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in rotary tools in which a chuck is employed for holding a metal drill or a boring device of any kind which may be operated by rotary action. v
The body of the machine may vary considerably in construction and may be utilized for purposes other than the operation of chuck tools, and one feature of my pres ent improvement consists in applying the chuck member and its gear to the body of the device in such a manner that it may be readily detachable, thus making it practicable to employ the body of the structure and its gears for the operation of tools other than the rotary chuck class.
The body of the framework is equipped with a number of gears arranged to multiply the motion transmitted from the main operating gear to the chuck, whereby a relatively low speed of the main gear when transmitted to the chuck through the agency of the speed-increasing gears, may be as high as desired.
Having briefly outlined my improved construction, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same looking in the direction of arrow'2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view looking in the direction of arrow 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of the detachable chuckholder with the chuck and its gear in place. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow 5.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the framework of my improved device, this framework including two bars 6 and 7 and an interposed brace bar 8. This framework is angular in shape, there being a bend 9 in the bar 6 intermediate its extremities, the bar 7 being curved to maintain the two bars 6 and 7 approximately parallel intermediate their extremities. The outer extremities of these bars are connected by a handle 10, while their opposite extremities are connected by a hand bar 12. To this bar 12 a chuck holder 13 is secured, the said holder consisting of an arm 14 provided with a lug 15 having an opening 16 to register with an opening formed in an extension 17 of the frame bar 12, a bolt 18 being passed through the registering openings and constituting a pivot for the arm 14. To this bolt is applied a nut to secure the parts in place. The arm 13 is further secured to the end bar 12 intermediate its extremities by a screw 19, which as shown in the drawing is provided with a winged head 20 to facilitate manipulation. This screw passes through separated lugs 21 which engage the bar 12 on opposite sides, but project inwardly beyond the same to allow the screw to pass through the space 22 between the extremities of the frame bars 6 and 7. The arm 14 curves outwardly as shown at 28 at its extremity remote from the lug 15 and terminates in an eye 24 through which a spindle 25 passes. On the inner extremity of this spindle is secured a gear 26, while to its outer extremity a chuck 27 is made fast, the said chuck being adapted to receive the tool 28 arranged to be operated by rotary movement.
The gear 26 is arranged to mesh with a corresponding beveled gear 29 occupying a position at right angles to the gear 26 and mounted on a spindle 3O journaled in the forward extremity of the frame 5 and secured in place by a nut 31. On the opposite extremity of the spindle 30 is made fast a pinion 32 which meshes with a relatively large gear 33 fast on a spindle 34 whose opposite extremity is equipped with a pinion 35 meshing with a still larger operating gear 36, which is equipped with a crank 37 provided with a handle 38. The gear 36 is fast on a spindle 39 journaled in the bar 6 of the framework, the said spindle as shown in the drawing having a head 40 at one ex- Patented May 21, 1912.
tremity and a nut 41 threaded on the opposite extremity. Hence as the large gear 36 is rotated by means of the crank 37, relatively rapid motion is communicated to the spindle 3 f, while the gear 33 mounted thereon further increases the speed of the spindle 80 by meshing with the pinion 32, while the same motion imparted to the spindle 30 is transmitted to the chuck 27 through the medium of the gears 29 and 26, which are of equal size.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a frame having a handhold at one extremity, a holder at the opposite extremity of the frame, achuck member journaled in the said holder, the holder being provided with an arm, the arm having a lug provided with an opening adapted to register with an opening formed in the extremity of the frame, the arm also having separated members adapted to straddle the extremity of the frame, means passed through. the registering opening of the frame and the lug and through the extremities of the separated members for securing the chuck holder to the frame, an operating spindle journaled in the main frame, and a gearing connection between the operating spindle and the rotary chuck member, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a main frame member having a handhold at one extremity, a holder arranged transversely of the opposite extremity of the main frame member, the said holder being pivotally connected at one extremity with the said main frame member, and adapted to be swung upon its pivot away from the main frame member, the said holder comprising a portion offset from the main frame member, means for retaining the holder rigid with the frame, a chuck member journaled in the said offset portion of the said holder, an operating spindle journaled in the main frame, a connect-ion between the chuck member and the operating spindle including a gear carried by the chuck member, and a cooperating gear carried by the adjacent extremity of the frame, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a main frame member having a handhold at one extremity, of a holder, a chuck member journaled in the said holder, the holder being pro vided with an arm having means thereon for det-achably connecting the same with the extremity of the frame opposite to the hand-hold, comprising separated members adapted to straddle the said extremity of the frame, an operating spindle journaled in the main frame, and a gearing connection between the operating spindle and the rotary chuck member, including a beveled gear carried by the chuck member and a cooperating beveled gear carried by the adjacent extremity of the frame, substantially as described.
