I-IIOKhIAN E. FOSTER, OF DFCATUR, HJLINOIS, ASSIGNOB TO HIMSELF, D. J. BLOCK, AND J. T. GATES, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING-SEAT FOR WAGONS.
.Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 102,673, datcdAMny 3, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HICKMAN E. FosTER, of Decatur, in the county of Mason, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wooden Spring-Seats for Wagons and other Wheeled Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a light, strong, and elegant springseat for wagons and other wheeled vehicles, by a combination of lever-springs with blocks and screw-bolts to the seat, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
Figure l in the drawings represents my invention viewed in perspective; and Fig. 2 is a detached view, showing the lower spring and the position its slot holds to the screwbolt, which plays in the slot more distinctly than it is shown in Fig. l.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now more fully describe its construction and operation by referring to the parts of my invention represented in the drawings, like letters indicating like parts.
A is the seat, of the usual form and make, to which spring B is secured by a screw-bolt, a, in such a manner that the beveled end of the spring B shall be firmly secured to the under side of the seat A.
At the same end of the seat, and on its front side, a block, C, is secured by screwbolt c, or other suitable means, and the under side of this block C is beveled, so as to suit the incline of spring B, which is suitably secured to block C, as shown in Fig. 1.
Spring B is also secured to the block C', which block C is secured to chord-board D, and to the fore end of board D the spring B and hanger F are secured by screw-bolt c', this lower end of spring B being beveled on its under side, so Aas to iit smoothly on the hanger F.
At the rear end of chord-board D a block, E, with its upper side beveled, is placed, to give the necessary strength and incline to spring G, whose lower beveled end is fastened with hangerF to board D, as seen at screwbolt g in Fig. l. The upper end of this spring G has a slot, h, in which a screw-bolt, t, or other suitable means, has free play, and which is secured to the spring B, block C, and seat A.
The bolt fi serves as a guide to the upper end of spring G when the weight of the driver depresses it, as the relative position of the bolt '5 and sloth (shown very clearly in Fig. 2) indicates.
Only one end of the wagon-seat and set of springs is above described 5 but as the opposite end of the seat A is provided with a set of springs, blocks, and hangers constructed exactly similar, it is merely necessary to mention the fact without further description.
I shall use hickory, oak, or .other suitable wood that is ordinarily used by wheelwrights or coach builders, to construct my springseat.
The seat and springs having been constructed as above set forth, the spring-seat thus formed is put on the wagon, and secured by the hangers F F to the sides of the wagon, with the springs extending lengthwise of the wagon, and on the drivers getting in seat A, 'the seat will be found to yield easily with his weight, by the springs B and G bending together on their respective blocks O and E, breaking the jolt and jar of the wagon e11- tirely, and thereby securing ease and comfort to the driver While using my improved springseat, and this, taking into consideration its cheapness, strength, neatness, simplicity, and durability, is among the most important advantages my invention possesses over others in the same class. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the springs B and Gr, when used lengthwise of the wagon, and with the springs B and Gr, the blocks, C C', and E, seat A, and hook F, forming a Wooden springseat for wheeled vehicles when constructed substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
