A. H. NBLSDN. L IGHTER. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 12, 1910.

A-v ALBERT H A ELSUA/ MW 51/ i THIRD T CLIFFORD J. TO LELIAND COBURN LARKINpOF EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS, AND NELSON, OF FANEUIL, MASSACHUSETTS.
T0 JOHN R. LEARNED, 0F NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ONE- ONE-THIRD LIGHTER.
and particularly to a spark-igniter for lighttypes of lighters in which sparks are gener of this sort it is very in normal posit-ion, Fig.
mg gas jets or similar burners. In devices desirable that the parts which are to deliver the spark be normally positioned away from. the flame. In those at-ed by friction between two bodies, it is furthermore of prime importance that the motion of the parts he so arranged as to deliver the spark at the proper point and, at the same time, that the relative movement of the parts during actuation be sutliciently rapid to emit the spark desired. To the end, therefore, of roviding means for securing the various features of advantage above sug gested, I have dcviscdfii'iy present-invention. This Iwill more fully describe in the specification which follows, reference being had to thedrawings which form a part thereof and in these drawings I have shown as an illustrative embodiment of the invention itself, a device practical use.
Throughout specification and drawings like. reference numerals are cn'iployed 'to indicate corresponding parts and in the drawings:-l igure l-is a side view of my igniter 2 a view of the same from the opposite side, Fig. 3 is a view of the device in position to deliver the spark, Fig. 4 is a view showing a. position of the parts-after the spark is delivered, Fig. '5 is an end View of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is a view of the containing plug.
.Upon any suitable fastening device, such;
as the clamp 1,'which is adapted to embrace the gas tip, indicated in dotted lines as 2, is mounted a bearing 3 on which a. projecting arm 4. fittedwith an inwardly Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed November 12, 1910. Serial which I find well'adapted to the device positioned asin' provided.
Within the bearing 3 is pivotedv an arm 6 having a laterally project-mg ear 7. On the opposite end of the lever 6 is formed a threaded socket 8 into which a screw plug 9 is adjusted. The screw plug 9 is externally threaded and preferably provided with a 'milling head and is internally bored or recessed to receive a spring 10 which is adapted to yieldingly press down the pencil 11. Below the socket 8 extends an arm 12 to which is pivoted at 13 a. sparking lever 14, which carries on its outer end 15 a roughened segment 16 which is concentric with the pivot 13 so that it will projecting pin 5.
vtravel in its rotation past the lower end of the plug 9 in contact with the pencil 11.
The inner end of the lever 14 norm-all Y lies below the pin which is set in the path traveled by that end when the lever 6 is operated. A spring 17. hooked at one end in the ear 7 and at the other to the upper end of the hearing 3, tends normally to keep the sparkii'ig end of the lever depressed. A chain 18 is provided for drawing down the rear end of the lever to raise the spark end. The spring 19 is also hooked in the ear 7,
but. at itsopposite end engages the rear end of the. lever 14-, thus tending to hold the roughened. segment 16 rotated past the plug 9.
The operatioi'i of my device is as follows: The parts normally stand in tin position shown in Fig. I. \Vhen it is desired to operate the device the chain l8is pulled, raising the sparking end of the lever 6 until it comes into the position shown in Fig. 3. In this position the sparking end of the lever is swung up through substantially 90, so that it stands in a nearly vertical position and at about the height of the tip of the gas jet. During this general movement of the sparking-end of the lever the segment 16 has undergone a rearward movement due to the arrest of the inner end of the lever 14 by the pin 5. This arrest of the innerend of to the change in posithe lever 14, owing tion of the main lever 6 with regard to the the segment-16 backward slowly until at the time that the parts reachits segment measures. In passing from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 5%, the lever 6 has moved sufliciently far to the vertical to clear the inner end of the lever l -l of the pin As soon as the inner end of the lever is free from its pin, its spring 19 quickly draws it straight, giving the roughened segment 16 a rapid rotatlon past the end of the plug 19, tearing from theend of the pencil 11 a shower of sparks which are projected into the path of the escaping gas as delivered by the gas jet. Upon the release of the chain 18 the spring 17 will return the main leyer 6 to position shown in Fig. 1, during which return the inner end of the lever 14 rides over the pin 5, being permitted to make a slightly backward movement on account of the position of the spring 19, but, being immediately drawn back into alinement by that spring as soon as the pin 5 is passed. Thus it will lie-seen that the parts are normally safely positioned out of the way of the flame, but, by a single motion of the hand of the user, they can be brought into operative position where they will operate as to the frictional parts by the instant automatic relations of the operating spring.
Various modifications in the construction and operation of the device may be made, all Without departing from the spirit of my invention if within the limits of the appended claims.
What I, therefore, claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an ignition device, a support, a lever pivoted to said support, a second lever pivoted on said first named lever, means for imrmall'y holding said second named lever in predetermined position relative to said first named lever, a curved abrasive member and means for supporting a spark producing material, said member and means being mounted one on one lever and the other on the other lever, and means for effecting a relative movementof said levers upon the actuation of the first named lever to secure a passing contact. h :tween' said abrasive member and said spark producing material.

5. In a as lighter, a clamp for-a gas jet having a earin thereon, a lever pivoted within said bearing, an ignition lever iv- 10 oted to said first named lever near one 0 its ends, means for yieldingly holding said first named lever with its ignition end depressed, an abrasive segmental surface on said ignition lever concentric with the pivot 105 thereof, means for holding a spark producing material yieldingly against said surface, means for yieldingly holding said two levers so relatively positioned that said abrasive ducing material and means for retarding the opposite end of said ignition lever during; the swing of said first named lever until the sparking end of said lever shall be adjacent to said gas tip, said retarding means thereupon ceasing to be effective, whereby said friction lever will be released and said friction segment suddenly rotated. 6.
