MITER-BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP R. WALLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabethville, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Boxes, of which. the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in miter boxes and more specifically to a miter box in which there are movable sections so arranged that their spheres of movement will have the desired effect of setting a saw at any given angle and in which the parts coact in order to cause the guide member in which the saw is guided to accurately embrace the saw in order that the work of sawing shall be simple and easy.
With the above and other objects in view my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction shown in the drawings and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The leading object of my invention resides in the production of a special hinge member connected to the bed plate of the miter box and guide member and in the means of adjusting the saw guide, the guide support, and the hinged member in positions designed to facilitate the work of setting a saw so as to cut timber at various angles, bevels and plumb cuts.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of my miter box, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 and showing the guide member disposed at an angle over timber, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the miter box and shows the guide member disposed at a diflerent angle over said timber, Fig. 5 is a detail view of the guide member, Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line a-a of Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 is a detail view of an adjusting member for the guide support.
The top part of the miter box is designated 1 and is provided with a longitudinal flange 2 which may be secured thereto by screws 3 and the object of which is to gage the miter box against timber by overlying the edge thereof, the bottom border of the flange 2 being formed with graduated lines as at 3. ends are arranged plunger devices of any suitable form working through suitable openings in the bed plate and spring actuated by the finger of the artisan so may project below the bottom of the bed plate to gage work having an irregular surface, such as moldings and the like, and adjacent said plungers are openings 5 for eye bolts or screws (not shown) serving as means of securement to planks and the like.
A screw threaded stud 6 is mounted upon the bed plate and is engaged by the internally screw threaded set screw 7.11aving a milled head. A segmental slot 9 is formed upon the member 8 through which said stud 6 projects, said member being pivoted to a pin 11 mounted upon an extension 10 of the bed plate 1. Integrally formed upon the member 8 is a reduced central tubular member 12 forming one element, of a hinge composed also of the tubular member, side members 15 each being tapered at its free end at 16 and suitably embraced at its tapered end by the ferrules 18 arranged to revolve in common with the members 15, when the member 2]. upon which the hinge elements are formed, moves in a radial path, the longitudinal slit 17 being formed in the tapered ends of each member 15. A rod 14 is passed through the hinge element 12 and through the auxiliary side members 15 and is disposed beyond each tapered end of said members so that at one side the cap 18 may be fixed in position over said rod and form a tight joint with the ferrule 17, while at the other end the internally screwthreaded cap 20 having a milled head may engage the screwthreaded extension 19 formed upon the rod 14. The construction of the hinge connection between the bed plate and the saw guide support hereinbefore described, is of special importance in the operation of my miter box, in that it provides a proper measure of frictional engagement between the hinge element 15 and the rod 14 suitable for moving the guide member at an angle with respect to the horizontally disposed bed plate in order to cut timber at a bevel.
The member 21 is pivoted to a pin 22 mounted upon a plate 26 which carries one side wall 23 forming with the side wall 24 mounted upon the plate 25, preferably similar in shape to plate 26, a guide for the saw, it being noticed that the guide walls 23 and 2 1 are segmental in shape, being secured to said plate by any suitable means that they such as countersunk screws 26, it being advisable to form said guide walls out of wood to lessen friction. The plates 25 and 26 are separated by the walls 23 and 2e]: and are separated at their upper ends by a transverse pin 27 serving as a pivot on which the plate 25 may be moved to adjust the guide wall 24 relatively to the opposed wall 23. At each side of the pin 27 are internally screwthreaded members 28 in which set screws may work at either end, the set screws 31 being arranged to hold the plate 25 in adjusted position. The member 21 is formed with a segmental slot 32 through which a screwthreaded pin 32' centrally projects which is mounted on the plate 26, engaged by the milled internally screwthreaded member 33, which acts to hold the plates 25 and 26 in adjusted position after the member 31 shall have been screwed home.
The member 8 has marked upon its segmental border graduated lines 34 and the sleeve member 12 carried by the member 8 is marked at either end with graduated lines 35 crossing the adjacent element 17 so that the hinge may be readily gaged.
The miter will be used as follows: The bed plate will be placed over the timber 37 with its flange 3 overlying one of the edges thereof, and should the surface of the timber be irregular, the plunger 1 may project below said plate to steady it. The screw members 31 will be loosened to enable the plate 25 to turn on its pivot 27 so that the guide wall 2t mounted on said member may move in a radial path as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5; and through the construction of the plate 25 it may be turned on its pivot despite the fact that there are two screw members 31 tapped through it to hold it against movement. It will be noticed that the plate 25 is formed at one side with a segmental slot 29 and at its other side with a terminal segmental kerf 20, through which slot and kerf respectively project the screw members 31, so that as said plate 25 is turned on pivot 27 the screw members will be accommodated by said cutaway portions 29 and 30 to allow of such movement. The screw members 31 may then be tightened and plate 25 held in extended position; the belly of the saw 36 will then be placed against the wall 23 of the plate 26 and the plate 25 will, after the screws 31 have been loosened, be swung back to alining position with respect to the plate 25 so that its side wall 24: will with said guide wall 23, embrace said saw with a minimum of friction, it being understood that the transverse pin 27 separates the members 25 and 26 sufliciently to allow a saw to move between said guide walls. The saw having thus been set the members 8 and 21 may both be adjusted for the purpose of arranging the guide walls at any angle with respect to the true horizontal and for the purpose of causing the guide wall membersto turn on the pin 22 ot' the pivot in order that the artisan may hold his saw obliquely in the guide without causing said guide members to unevenly embrace it. The screw memher (3 will be loosened sutliciently so that the member 8 may, through its slot 9, be moved and then it will be tightened to hold said member fixed; and the screw member 33 will simultaneously be loosened and tightened to allow the member 21 to be held in adjusted position over the segmental slot 32.
To set the saw at the appropriate angle suitable to cut the timber at any bevel the plates and 26 having been suitably con nected by the tightening of the screw members 31, may then be turned in unison upon the hinge shown in Fig. 6, by the special construction of which it will remain in set position by friction alone.
By means of the graduated lines marked upon the bed plate 1 of the member 8 and the hinged sleeve 12 the artisan may readily gage the various movable members of the miter.
To release the saw it is necessary to unscrew the member 31 so as to allow the plate 25 to turn on its pivot 27 in the manner hereinbefore described.
Numerous modifications may be resorted to without departing in principle from the details of construction shown.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A miter box comprising a bed plate, a support with a swivel mounting for movement in a horizontal plane and pivoted for movement in a vertical plane, a plate adjustably pivoted to said support, a plate adjustably pivoted to said first named plate, means for separating said plates,.and opposed walls mounted upon said plates and forming a guide for a saw.
2. A miter comprising a bed plate, a hinged support pivoted, to said bed plate, opposed walls forming a saw guide mounted on said support, means carried by said support for holding said walls in registering position, means for adjusting said registering walls angularly on the support, and means for enabling said walls to be swung out of registration wit-h one another.
3. In a miter, in combination, a bed plate having a rectangular flange, a hinged memher having one of its sections adjustably pivoted to said bed plate, a plate mounted at its inner end to the opposite section of said member, a stud carried at the free end of said plate, a guide wall mounted at the lower inner end of said plate, a plate pivoted at its outer end to the top of said stud, a spaced apart wall mounted on said last named plate in registering position adjacent said first named wall to form a saw guide therewith, and means for holding said last named plate when turned on its pivot.
4:. In a miter, in combination, a bed plate having a rectangular flange, a hinged mem her having one of its sections adj ustably pivoted to said bed plate, a plate pivoted at its inner end to the opposite section of said member, a stud carried at the free end of said plate, a guide wall mounted at the lower inner end of said plate, a plate pivoted at its outer end to the top of said stud, a wall mounted on said last named plate, in register adjacent said first named wall to form a saw guide therewith, means for holding said walls in register, means for adjustably holding said last named plate, and means for adjustably holding said first named plate.
5. A miter comprising a bed plate having a rectangular flange, a segmental member pivoted to said bed plate and having a segmental slot, a stud on said bed plate and projecting through said slot and formed with a screwthreaded portion, a tubular screw engaging said screw threaded portion, and said member, a plate hingedly connected to said member, a guide wall mounted upon said plate, a stud at the free end of said plate, a plate pivoted at the end of said stud and carrying a guide wall movable into registering position facing said other guide wall, internally screw threaded studs on said hinged plate, said last named plate formed with cut-away portions through which said last named studs project to accommodate it to radial movement, and set screws on said studs for clamping said last to said first named plate.
6. A miter comprising a flanged bed plate, a segmental member pivoted thereto, and having a segmental slot, screw studs mounted on the bed plate, and projecting through said slot, a member hinged to said segmental member having a segmental slot, a plate pivoted to said last named member, a screw stud mounted on said plate and projecting through said last-named slot, internally threaded set screws engaging said screw studs, a stud mounted at the free end of said plate, a plate pivoted to the free end of said stud and spaced by the latter, relatively smaller segmental walls secured in registering relation between said plates, internally screw-threaded tubular studs mounted on said first named plate, said other plate having cut-away portions segmentally oppositely arranged through which said tubular studs project, and set screws on said studs, for clamping together said plates.
