Description
T.E.O,BRINLY.
PlowUlevis.
Patented May 3, 1870. JZy/ N- PETERS. PHOTD-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. C
.the annexed drawings, making UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. o. BRINLY, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMP ROVEMENT m PLOW-CLEVISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 102,652, dated May 3, 1870.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. O. BRINLY,
' of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and on line 00 a; of Fig. 1, showing the clevisin position in the beam, the bolt which holds the same in such position, and the flange upon the top of such clevis. Fig. 3 is a top view ofsuch clevis, showing the shoulders which bear against the end of the beam.
Corresponding letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to clevises for plows and other similar devices; and it consists in the construction of such clevis, and in its combination with the beams of plows, 'as will be more fully described hereinalter. I
A in the drawings refers to'a section of a plow-beam, which may be of anysuitable form,
it being provided with a slot in its forward end for the reception of the flattened portion of theclevis, as shown in Fig. 2.
B refers to the clevis, which may be of cast iron or of any other suitable material, its rear portion or that portion which enters the slot in the plow-beam, being from one-half of an inch to, say, one inch in thickness, and of a depth about equal to the depth of the beam at the point where it enters the same, this portion being supplied with a flange or flanges upon its upper surface, which shall project over uponthe surface of the beam, as shownin Fig.2, the object of which is to keep the outer end of the clevis from being raised or depressed, except as it moves with the beam of the plow. At
the front or outer end of the flattened portion of the clcvis above alluded to, and upon the sides thereof, there are formed two projecting flan gesone upon either side of such flattened p'ortion--which. in length are about equal to the width thereof, and which are of a width sufficient to form a shoulder, which may extend nearly across the front end of the beam of the plow, or at least far enough to serve as a fur- .therprcvention of the movements of the clevis in the beam. Outside of the flanges above alluded to there is to be formed a web or plate of metal, which may be of the oval form shown in Fig. l, orof any other suitable form, it being surrounded at all points except where itjoins the flanges with a raised portion of metal for the purpose of giving additional strength to the web or plate within, through which are formed a series of holes arranged in the order shown, so that the connection'with the doubletree or whiftietree may be made at either point where such holes occur, and thus the depth to which the plow shall enter the ground be regulated.
0 refers to a bolt which passes through the beam of the'plow and through that portion of the cleviswhich enters the beam. and thus attaches the two permanently to each other, such bolt being held in its position by a nut upon the end thereof, which bears against the beam.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The construction of the clevis B, substantially in the manner shown and described.
-- 2. The combination of the within-described clevis B with the slot in the end of the plow-' In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
