CAR J OURNAL-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1 1, 1912.
Application filed March 1'7, 1910. Serial No. 550,056.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUsTIN BERRY, of the city of Ottawa, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car journal boxes, and the objects of my invention are to prevent the dust and dirt pressing in between the cover and the body of the box, and it consists essentially of a cover formed with one or more tongues or ribs adapted to enter grooves in the edge of the body of the box, said body of the box being further provided with outwardly turned shoulders over which flanges on the cover are adapted to lit, the whole being constructed and arranged as shown in detail in the accompanying specifications and drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal, sectional view through the box and cover. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the box with the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cover. Fig. 4 is a trans verse section through the box and cover.
In the drawings, like character of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the box and B the cover which is hinged thereto in any suitable way, and may if desired, be spring held in closed position in a manner now well known in the art.
In accordance with the present invention, the edge 10 of the box around the usual opening 11 is enlarged and formed on the sides with outwardly extending shoulders 12 and 13 and the cover is formed with flanges 14 and 15 adapted to fit closely to the outer surface of these shoulders, the said flanges being thus a short distance outwardly removed from the side surfaces of the box, whereby, dust and dirt blowing against the side surfaces will be caught in the corners 16 and 17 and will not find their way into the joint between the cover and the box.
Each side of the upper edge of the box around the opening is formed with one or more grooves 18 and 19, the grooves on opposite sides extending across the top of the box in an inclined manner and converging to a point at 20, said grooves opening at the lower edge of the box as shown in Fig. 2,
whereby, any dirt or dust collecting in the grooves will gradually move downwardly owing to the steep incline of the edge of the box and will finally drop out of the open grooves. The cover is provided with a plurality of tongues 21 and 22 adapted to fit in said grooves.
In order to further exclude the dirt and dust from the interior of the box, the inner edge of the opening is provided with an outwardly extending rib 23 adapted to take into a corresponding groove 24 provided on the under surface of the cover. The top of the cover is also provided with a flange 25 extending at an acute angle thereto and adapted when the cover is closed to fitclosely to a shoulder 26 formed on the box itself. A transversely extending groove 27 is also formed in the bottom edge of the box and the cover is provided with a corresponding tongue 28 adapted to fit into said groove.
It will thus be seen that the improved construction hereinbefore described, provides an exceedingly eflective method of ex cluding the dust and dirt from the interior of the box. I11 the first place, dust blowing in a sidewise direction, will blow against the corners 16 or 17 and will not be liable to find its way into the joint between the cover and the box. Then the cover is provided with tongues entering grooves, and any dirt collecting in the grooves willdrop out at the bottom. Then again the box is provided with a rib to be taken into the grooves of the cover.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claims could be made without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specifications and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention is:
l. A car journal box having out-wardly turned shoulders on each side of the opening therein, and a cover having flanges fitting closely to the outer surface of said shoulders, said shoulders having grooves at the sides of said opening and open at their lower ends, the upper portion of said side grooves diverging in an upwardly and inwardly direction to a common point, said grooves being closed except at their lower the box, and a cover having tongues adaptends. ed to enter said grooves. in
2. A car journal box having the usual In Witness whereof I have hereunto set opening and grooves formed in the edges at my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
each side of the opening, said grooves being AUSTIN BERRY.
inclined and converging toward each other Witnesses: at the top to a point Where they meet, sald RUssEL S. SMART, grooves :turther opening at the bottom of M. GILBER'rsON.
