Description

N. B. GREGG. DEVICE FOR PREPARING SURFACES TO BE PAINTED.

NORRIS B. GREGG, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
DEVICE FOR PREPARING SURFACES TO BE PAINTED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1912.
Application filed July 11, 1910. Serial No. 571,259.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NORRIS B. GREGG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Preparing Surfaces to be Painted, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention consists of an apparatus for performing the process of preparing surfaces to be palnted described in my copending application for patent filed July 11,1910, Serial No. 571,260, for improvement in the art of painting. As described in-thatapplication, said improvement consists, generally stated, in the preparation of the surface to be painted by piercing the outer surface of the body to be painted with perforations which to a greater or less depth penetrate said body, so as to enable liquid paint applied to said outer surface to penetrate the interior of said body. When the body to be painted bears an old coat of paint, said perforations will pass through same and into the body itself of the object to be painted. In cases in which the object is receiving its first coat of paint, said perforations will pass through the outer skin or surface of said body and penetrate more or less into its interior. Said perforations may be produced by hand, 6. 9., by pin pricks or any other means. So far as the practice of said improved process of painting is concerned, the apparatus or means for perforating the surface of the body to be painted is immaterial; but, in the present application, one form of apparatus therefor is illustrated and described.
In the accompanying drawing, like numbers of reference denote like parts Wherever they occur, and the figure illustrates a roller device adapted to produce indentations or perforations.
While the device shown in the drawing of this application is there depicted as adapted to be manually operated, same can be readily adapted to be operated pneumatically, like the well-known pneumatic hammers, chisels, riveters, and the like, or electrically, or by any other suitable means. 7
In the hand type of this device set forth in the present application, the handle 1 constitutes a hand-grasp by which the roller 2 can be pressed firmly against the surface to be prepared for painting. The projections 3 are in the form of serrations, and are preferably arranged in annular rows so that the projections of each row have a staggered relation to the projections of the adjacent row, so as to produce indentations or perforations like those depicted in Fig. 3 of the copending process application, or, if desired, same may be otherwise varied in arrangement.
I claim:
A device of the type set forth including a roller formed with a plurality of series of independent circular rows of concave grooves, the meeting edges of the walls formed by said grooves providing straight knife edge projections that are co-extensive with the longitudinal axis of said roller, the outer end portions of the walls and said knife edge projections formed by one row of grooves projecting outwardly and being disposed in the center of the spaces between the pairs of knife-edge projections formed by the adj accnt row of grooves.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
NORRIS B. GREGG.
Witnesses:
GLADYs WALTON, GEORGE G. ANDERSON.
