FASTENING THE ENDS OF THE BINDING STRIP OR BAND WHICH PASSES AROUND A BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August. 25,
- To all whom it may Concern Be itknown that 1', Hannisox 1?). ar/run, a citizen of the Ynited States, residing at Danville, in county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening; the -Ends of the Binding Strip or Band which passes Around a Box, oi which the following is a specification. i
' My invention relates to an in'iproveinent in fastening the ends oi the binding strip or band which passes around a box.
This invention adapted more partieularly for boxes which are capable of being; folded together, and the sides of which are provided with battens. to which the sides he end members.
The object of thdinvention is to provide a slot in a batten at each end of the l)0X, whereby a tool can be inserted in. the slot for clenching the rivet or eyelet which is insorted through the ends of the band for tastoning the ends of the band together, and to the body or one of the sides ot the box. The invent on consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter tully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, .lfiiegure l is a perspective view at the box; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view through the slotted batten and :lastenitug means coir meeting the ends of the band to the body of the box.
A, .represen the body at the box, which consists of four sides, each side having: a batt-en l l connected thereto, which. lnittens are provided with beveled ends i. for tornn ing'a mitered joint when the box is folded together. A band 8, preferably of metal, passes around the body A of the box, and s connected. thereto by means of nails 4 which are driven through the band and body into the battens, whereby the band and body are securely fastened to PatcntedMay 14, 1912.
1911. Serial No. 645,918.
the battens. One of the battens 1. on each end of the box is provided with a slot the ends of the bands 3 overlapping each other over the slotted portion of the battens. A rivet 6 is inserted through the ends of the band and through the body A of the box, whereby the tool (not.- shown) can be inserted in the slot 5 for clenching the end of the rivet. or eyelet (3 for fastening the ends of the band together and to the body of the box. It is the object of the invention to use a tool which can be inserted in the slot for punching a hole through the ends of the band and body of the box, through which the rivet or eyelot can be placed, and then by the same tool, clenching the rivet for fastening the ends of the band and body together. As any Form of tool for this purpose can be used, I have not deemed it necessary to disclose any particular form, as the tool forms no part of the present invention.
llaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let tors Patent, is
The combination with the body portion of a box and a frame to which the body portion is secljlred, said frainc'baving an open slot in. the edge: to which the body portion is attached, of a band facing and encircling the part of the body portion adjacent to the frame, the ends of the band ovcrlap iing each other over the. open slot, and a rivet extending through the overlapped ends of the band, the body portion adjacent thereto, and into the slot in which lattenits inner end is upset.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
HARRISON B. \VALTER.
