To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN AIIRENS, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 3 Hardenburgstrasse, Posen, Germany, certificated engineer, have invented certain new and ,useful Improvements in Hot-\Vater Heating Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a single pipe water-heating device with pump action, in which suitable regulating valves are constructed in the descending supply pipes which enable a whole group of heating bodies to be regulated. This arrangement has firstly the advantage that the numerous different regulating valves are dispensed with and secondly that the so-called short circuiting or diverting pipes become unnecessary, and thirdly none of the heating-body connection pipes are connected with the ascending and descending supply pipes but. di-
rectly with the regulating valves constructed in the descending supply pipes.
The regulating valves constructed in the descending supply pipes consist of a combined cylinder slide and ball valve the inlet and the outlet openin in the cylinder slide being arranged in di erent planes, so that when the valve is raised the sectional area of the inlet remains unthrottled and the sectional area ofthe outlet is only partially throttled, even when the largest quantity of water is diverted, so that the feeding of the rest of the heating bodies connected with the supply is undisturbed and the reconveyance of the diverted hotwater into the descending supply pipe can be effected without any stoppage. The invention does not consist in the specific COIlSlLIUCtlOIY'eOf the regulating valves'but only in the combination of the regulating valves with the supply main of the system.
The invention is illustrated in the drawing, F igurel being a diagrammatical illustration of a heating arrangement. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 through the valve-casing with a connection for one set of heating-bodies. a is the ascending supply pipe running from the pump, .7) are the descending supply pipes. As shown by arrows in Fig. 2, the tubular portion of the valve on the left is the inlet, that on the right the outlet, 0 indicates the heating bodies, (Z the return flow pipes.
The valve 6 has the same sectional area as the descending supply pipe, and is provided with a distributing chamber 70 for one or more connections 2'. With the actual valve casing f inlet and outlet junctions g and k are connected.
i is a heating body junction which is situated on the distributing chamber in. In Fig. 4 a second heating body junction [is shown, a form of construction which is necessary in the arrangement according to Fig. 1 where two series of heating bodies are connected to one valve. The cylinder slide m that is guided on a pin Z and secured against turning, is movable in the cylindrical casing f, which slide terminates in the direction of the valve spindle as a valve flange n adapted to rest on a valve seat f of the easing f. The casing f is provided with an internally threaded cap r, through which works a screw threaded spindle .9, having a handle 2., and by which the slide m is actuated. The opening 0 in the cylinder slide m that coincides with the opening in the inlet junction 9 is of such length that when the valve is raised to the highest point the inlet opening in the valve casing is unthrottled, while the opening p, that coincides with the rectangular opening u in the outlet junction h, extends to the conical surface of the valve cone n, so that when the regulating device is raised the opening to the outlet junction at can be throttled to a certain extent der slide. As the opening 79 extends to the valve cone a, when this is raised it frees the passage which is necessary for. the diverting of the quantity of water throttled by the valve n. As will be seen from the drawing the opening to the outlet junction h is not completely throttled even when the largest quantity of water is diverted.

The water flowing out of the heating bodies 0 into the return flow pipes (Z and descending supply pipes Z) ing with the source of heat supply, heat radiating means, and a circulation control device interposed along said 'supply'main and in communication withjsaid heat radiating means, said circulation control device including a casing provided with a chamber having inlet and outlet ports for communication with said supply main, alined to permit uninterrupted flow therethrough, and a chamber in communication with said first mentioned chamber adapted for communication with said heatradiating means, and a plunger, movable cross-wisethe direction of current flow, adapted to close or open the communication between the said chambers of said casing, and provided with a wall adjacent to the said outlet port of' said first mentioned casing, whereby said plunger may be moved to retard the current flow at said outlet port and divert the same into said second mentioned chamber, or to simultaneously close the said communication between the said, chambers and allow uninterrupted passage through said first mentioned chamber.
