PAUL J. SHNIEDEWEND, JR., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO PAUL SHN'IEDE- WENI) AND COMPANY, OF CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
HAND-PROOF-PRESS TYMPAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL J. SHNIEDE- WEND, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Hand- Proof-Press Tympans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to presses used in printing ofiices for taking quick proofs of type cuts and the like.
The object of the invention is to provlde a tympan for such a press of such a character that the press can be used with a minimum number of hand movements and consequent saving of time in use.
The invention consists in mechanism for carrying out the foregoing object which can be very economically and cheaply constructed and which is satisfactory in operation.
The invention more in detail consists in a specific construction and mounting of the tympan and in details of construction to be hereafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a proof press of well known commercial construction having the device of this invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a central sectional detail view taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 3, showing the press memher to which the tympan is attached, and Fig. 3 is a corresponding view upon the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a broken plan view of parts shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Again referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows the standards 10 of an ordinary proof press carrying an upper frame 12 in which is mounted the upper press member or platen 14, adapted to be operated by the combination of the springs 16, the lever mechanism 18 and the lever handle 20 in the ordinary manner; the motion of the platen 14 being vertical. These standards 10 are connected together by the horizontal member 22 carrying the track 24 supported at its outer end by the post 26 in the ordinary manner. Traveling upon this track 24 are wheels 26 supporting the press bed 28 upon which the type, cuts, form or other device from which the proof is to be taken is mounted. This bed 28 is operated along the track 24 by a lever handle 25 and shaft 27 well known in the art. In the ordinary operation of the device, this bed 28 is run to the extreme front end of the track 24,
over the post 26, the form, or cuts, are placed upon the bed and it is moved under the previously elevated platen 14 which is then lowered by operation of the handle 20 in the ordinary manner. A sheet of paper or other material upon which the proof is to be taken is placed between the platen l4 and the form of type or cut on the bed.
In order that a proper proof may be made it is necessary that there be a pad or tympan of some kind between the platen l4 and the paper upon the type carried by the bed 28. this has heretofore been pro- In practice, vided by a very complicated mechanism requiring several manipulations in order to obtain satisfactory work. The device of this invention does away with such complicated mechanism and provides simply a horizontal plate 30 upon the underside of the platen 14 provided at one end with a detachably removable bar 32 to which a strip of paper 34 is detachably secured by being wound around it, as shown, said paper being then carried, as shown, along the under side of the plate 30 around the opposite end 36 onto a roller 38 provided with prongs 40 or other similar device for engaging the paper. The bar 42 is provided by which the roller 38 may be rotated to tighten the paper. The bar 42 is upon a shaft 44 rigidly connected to the roller 38, and this shaft is journaled in bearings 46 at opposite ends of the roller, one of said bearings being split into two parts 48 connected together by a bolt 50 and nut 52, by which the shaft may be detachably locked in any desired position, with the result that the paper controlled by the roller is locked in the same position.
The rod 32 is preferably detachably secured to the device by being mounted at its ends in clips 52 upon the ends of the plate 30 in such a way that it can be slid endwise out of and entirely clear of the device but cannot be moved in any other direction, the result being that the pull upon the paper cannot accidentally remove this bar 32. The paper 34 is also provided with side flaps 56 adapted to extend up the sides of the plate 30 heretofore described and be engaged by latches 58 pivoted at 60 and adapted to slip under the screws, pins or the like 62, as best seen in Fig. 3.
In the operation of the device the operator first takes his strip of pad paper and secures it in any suitable manner upon the bar 32 and then places any additional padding members 64 which are desired between the paper and the plate 30, as best seen in Fig. 3, and then winds the paper loosely upon the roll 38, after which, after loosening the bolt 50, he rotates the handle 42 to draw the paper 34 tight. He then snaps the latches 58 into place, thus tightening the paper, and
consequently the supplemental padding 64 crosswise of the plate 30 or in a direction transversely to the tightening which was produced by rotating the wheel 42. When this has been done the platen 14 is completely and satisfactorily padded and repeated proofs may be taken upon successive sheets of proof paper placed directly upon the form carried by the bed 28 without in any way disturbing this sheet of paper 34, it only being necessary to manipulate the handle 20 to lower and raise the platen 14 every time a proof is desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hand proof press tympan consisting of a flat plate adapted to be secured to a powerfully operating mechanism, a rod at one end of the plate adapted to have a sheet of flexible material secured thereto, a roller at the opposite end of the plate adapted to be detachably engaged by said flexible member,
means for rotating said roller to tighten the flexible member, means for locking said roller in selected position and latches upon the sides of the plate adapted to engage the flexible material to secure it to the sides of the plate.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
