BAKERS PEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 10, 1911.
Patented May 14. 1912.
Serial No. 626,162.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK A. HANEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented'new and useful Improvements in Bakers Peels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the bakery, and more especially it is a peel adapted for the use of the baker in a manner which is well understood; and the object of the same is to construct an implement of this character which is simple in its makeup, light in weight, and easily cleaned and repaired.
To this end the invention consists in the construction hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as shown in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the peel. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a rear end and front edge view of the blade. Fig. 5 is a rear view and a side view of the handle holder. Figs. 6 and 7, are details of different forms of union which may be employed.
In the drawings numeral 5 designates the blade which is preferably rectangular in plan view as shown in Fig. 1, excepting that its rear inner corners are beveled ofi? as at 6, and it is made up of upper and lower plates which come to a sharp edge at the front of the blade as seen at 7 in Fig. 2. These plates diverge to the rear from this edge, and along the edges of the blade 5 they are turned in and united by any suitable form of joint. That is to say, they might be riveted together as seen at 9 in Fig. 6, crimped together as seen at 10 in Fig. 7, or possibly soldered, although I prefer not to use solder on account of the heat to which this implement is subjected and furthermore because it may taint the food with which it is employed. The dimensions of the blade are not essential, and the degree of its taper is unimportant although it is by preference rather slight as indicated in Fig. 2.
The handle holder as seen in Fig. 5 is by preference also made up of two strips of sheet metal whose edges may be turned in toward each other and lapped and riveted as shown at 9, or connected by any form of crimp or soldered as above described. These two strips 11 and 12 when united producea rather wide opening forming a socket 25 as seen at the left of Fig. 5, which projects beyond the rear end of the blade 5, from which point they converge toward the front to the same degree as the plates of which the blade is composed, and therefore the strips of the handle holder lie within and between the plates of the blade and in contact with their inner faces. 'Rivets 19 are passed through the plates of the blade and the strips of the handle holder as seen in Fig. 1, and thereby rigidly connect these two members. Finally a handle 20, which is by preference of wood although it may be made of metal or other material, is inserted into the socket at the rear end of the handle holder and held there by a bolt 21 in order that the handle may be removed and replaced when it becomes necessary. The length and shape of this handle is immaterial, and aside from it the parts of this peel are by preference entirely of metal. The metal may be wrought or cast iron, aluminum, or other metal suitable for use in this connection; and as above stated the proportions and sizes of parts are not essential. Such an implement is light in weight, easily handled and cleaned, and can be manufactured at very little cost. It will not be necessary in this specification to amplify the uses to which this implement is put; in fact, it may be used for a variety of purposes besides that ordinarily given it in the bakery.
What is claimed as new is:
The herein described bakery peel comprising a blade substantially rectangular in plan view and composed of twometallic plates contacting with each other and forming a sharp edge along the front of the blade and diverging from each other away from such edge, their side edges being turned in toward each other and lapped and rigidly connected, a handle holder connected to the blade and composed of two metallic strips conthrough the socket and handle.
