v13e it known that I, ROY 7. MACKNEER, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Mooreteld, in thc county of Hardy and State of Test Virginia, have invented new and usetul Improvements in Swings, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention frelates toy swings. the objcct of the ii'ivention heilig tio-provide in the construction ot the swing an improved construction of reclining chair embodying relatively adjustable back and toot-iest-t'orming members and to provide means facilitating the adjustment of such members and for holding them securely in their adjusted positions.
ln the drawings, forming a portion ot this specification and in which like numerals ot' reference indicate similar parts in the several views ldligurc 1 aside view of my improved swing. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof. Figz a section on line 3dS o1 Fig. 1. Fig. -t is a section von line 1 -,t of
1. Fig. 5 is a section on line ot Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a section on line 646 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 1
showing a slightly modified 'form ot the invention.
My improved swing enlbodies aree-.lining chair 1 which comprises ay slatted bottom 2 which provided with depending side bars a which are suitably secured to the slats -t and connected with each other by the retaining bolt 5. The chair is provided with arm rests G which are supported upon the sides 3 by rungs 7. Eye bolts 8 extend vertically through the side bars and through the arm rests G, the eyes i) ot' which being attached to suitable suspending devices such as the chains 1() shown herein.
A back 11 is provided and it preferably includes side members 12 and the horizontal4 members 13 and 14. The members 13 and llt are connected with each other by the rungs 15. through the member 1l and is suitably connected with-theysidc members 12. as shown. rlhe side members 12 extend downwardly below thc member 14 and they are provided with detachable clamping bolts 17 which are designed for interchangeable engagement in the openings 18 in the bottom bars lil 'ot the chair.
the rear ends thereof and through the provision ot such hinges the chair back can be Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 15, 1911.

adjusted so as to lie at any required or desired angle with respect to the chair bottom, the engagement of the clamping bolts 17 in the longitudinally arranged series ot' perforations 1S in the bottom members 19 serving to hold the back in its adjusted position. In addition to the means just described the side members 12 of the back are preferably termed to provide longitudinal slots 21. longitudinally adjustable links 22, the` rear ends ot the said links being-provided with retaining" bolts 23 which are adjustably mounted in the slots 21, as shown in Fig. 1 ot' the'drawings. The links 22 are preferably provided'vf'ith longitudinal slots 24 through which the clamping bolts 25 on the arm rests extend.
flhe bottom bars 19 are provided with vertically disposed brackets 26 which are connected with each other by a horizontally disposed rod 27. A foot-rest 28 is located in advance of the chair bottom and it preterably includes :t supporting frame 29 having side bars 8O which are provided at their rear upper portion with a plate 31. The side bars 30 are grooved longitudinally and the longitudinal walls-otl the groove are spaced from the plate 81 so as to form therewith a longitudinal slot 32.y The ends ot the rod 27 extend into the slots 32 in the said side bars 30 so as to permit adjustment ot' the toot-rest with respect to the said rod.
'lilith a View of holding the foot-rest in the. desired adjusted position 1 preferably provide each bar 30 with a pivoted retain- 'ing device'or keeper 33. As shown in the drawings, the ends of the rod 27 are remov- `ablv titted in recesses 34 in the upper ends ot the brackets 26. The retaining or keeper plates are each provided with a longitudinal series of recesses 85 which are designed to engage the rod'27 so as to hold the same positively against sliding movement in the slots The rear ends of theretaining or keeper plates are detachably secured to the sidebars 30 by means of fastening devices 3G. The'torward ends ot the side bars 30A have secured thereto the forward extremities of adjusting chains 37. These chains extend rearwardly and theirv 4links are designed for interchangeable engagement with retaining devices 38 whichV are supported by the arm rests. The side bars 3 of theJ chair bottom and the bottom bars 19 are connected 4with each by relatively adjustable links 39 v lo tudinally to" receive the clamping l bolts 41 which extend from the ,links 39.
4.5; From the' construction described it will be vseen that the b'aoklof'th'e chair may "be v2idjusted at .various angles with respect Atoi the bottom of the chair.y The foot-rest may be also adjusted Aatjvarious `angles With respect to the bot-tom 'of the 'chalir and With respect to 'the' back .thereof land its specicfuse'in vconnection Wit-h the specic back described Will alo'rd to the userl of the chair /onsiderable comfort. l
. In the. modified form .of the invention 'shoWnfin-Fig.- 7', the side members 12 are .provided Ywith .clamping bolts 41 which extendthrough 'longitudinal v slots 42 and the "bottom bars 43 through longitudinal slots 44 inthe,v foot rest bars 45. The brackets 46 are provided With-"vertical slots 47 which extend across theslo'ts 44 in' the foot rest. bars.
