Description

UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFICE.
GEORGES ROBINET, OF RI-IEIMS, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR T0 G. H. MUMM & C0., OF RHEIMS,
FRANCE, A FIRM.
TIN-FOIL CAP FOR CHAMPAGNE AND OTHER BOTTLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1912.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be 1t known that I, GEORGES ROBINn'r, a
citizen of the Republic of France, residing l in Rheims, in said Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tin-Foil Caps for Champagne and other Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved tinfoil cap for champagne and other bottles in which the cork is retained by means of wiring in the mouth of the bottle.
The object of this invention is to prevent t-he removal of the tinfoil neck coverings on which the firm name, trade-mark and other indications relating to the manufacture and quality of the champagne or other contents of the bottle are contained from the bottles when opening the same, so that the name and other indications of origin are still retained thereon when the bottle is served, even if the principal label which is pasted onto the body of the bottle should be removed while the bottle is placed in ice for cooling.
For this purpose the invention consists of an improved cap comprising a neck-portion and a cork-portion, said portions being separate from each other, the neck-portion surrounding the upper part of the neck of the bottle and the cork-portion covering the cork of the bottle and the upper part of the neck-portion, and being provided with a V- shaped recess extending inwardly from the lower edge of the cork-portion and having its apex seated on the wire holding the cork in position and leaving the part of the neckportion under said recess of the cork-portion uncovered.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side-elevation of the neck of a champagne-bottle which is capped according to my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively top-views of the blanks for the cap and neck covering in flattened condition as they are cut from the tinfoil.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the different figures.
Referring to the drawings the neck A of a champagne or other bottle is provided with a cork which is retained by wiring, which surrounds the neck rim B1 and is contiguous thereto. This wiring is provided with twisted -and ends B.
The blanks for the cap and the neck-covering are cut in oblong tinfoil, preferably in the shapes shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The tinfoil blank C is intended to be used as a cap and yis provided at its lower edge with an inwardly-extending recess C1 of inverted V-shape, as shown in Fig. 3, which recess extends inwardly from the lower edge of the blank. The neck of the bottle below the rim is covered by a tinfoil covering or neck-portion D.
The tinfoil neck covering D and the cap C are placed in position in such a manner that the lower part of the cap C overlaps the upper end of the neck-covering D. The recess C1 in the cap L; is slipped over the eX- tending portion of the twisted shank of the ends B of the cork-fastening wire so that the ends B by means of which the wire is untwisted and removed are located outside of the tinfoil cap. The upper portion of the cap is placed in the usual manner around the project-ing portion of the cork and rim of the bottle so as to impart a finished appearance to the same.
When opening the bottle, the wire-ends are uuntwisted and the fastening wire removed. The cork is then removed from the bottle, allowing the name, trademark, etc., indicating quality or' mark of the champagne or other beverage to remain and indicating thereby 4before and after use the genuine character of the beverage.
As fiat tinfoil blanks are used in place of the tubular expensive caps and neck-coverings, an inexpensive, convenient and quickly applied covering for the neck and corks of champagne and other bottles is obtained.
The improved cap consists of a neck-portion and a cork-portion, the neck-portion being adapted to surround the bottle-neck contiguous to and below the rim and to extend downwardly therefrom while the corkportion covers the cork and the upper part of the neck-portion and is provided with a V-shaped recess extending inwardly from its lower edge, which recess has its apex seated on the wire holding the cork and allows the part of the neck-portion under the recess to remain uncovered whereby a substantial portion of t-he neck-portion otherwise covered by the cork-portion, remains uncovered.
outwardly projecting pieces from sheets of The neck-portion and cork-portions are formed by two separate blanks which when applied have the lateral edges overlap each other and coperate in the manner heretofore described.
`I have shown an embodiment of'my in vention, but it is clear that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A cap for bottles having a neck-rim, a cork and a wire surrounding the neck and abutting against said rim with a portion extending therefrom, said cap comprising in combination a neck-portion and a cork-portion, said neck-portion being adapted to surround the bottle-neck contiguous to and below the rim and to extend downwardly therefrom, said cork-portion having a V- shaped recess extending inwardly from its lower edge, and said cork-portion being adapted to cover the cork, neck-rim and surrounding wire of the bottle and to extend downwardly at said recess below the upper part of the neck-portion to cover the-upper part of the saine and to leave the part of the neck-portion under said recess uncovered, and said cork-portion being adapted to be seated at the apex or said recess on the extending portion of the bottle-wire.
2. An improved cap for champagne bottles having a neck-rim, a cork and a wire surrounding the neck and abutting against said rim wit-h a portion extending therefrom, the said cap being formed of two separate iat blanks, one of which is substantially rectangular in shape and the other of which is also substantially rectangular in shape and is provided with a V-shaped recess extending inwardly froni one edge thereof, the neck-portion being adapted to surround the bottle-neck, and having its lateral edges overlapping each other and its uper edge contiguous to and below the rim of the bottle and extending downwardly along the neck of the bottle away from its rim, and said cork-portion being adapted to cover the cork, neck-rim and surrounding wire of the bottle and have its lateral edges overlap each other, and to extend downwardly so as to have its lower edges seated on the neckportion, the recess or' the cork-portion leaving the part of the neck-portion under said recess uncovered with the cork-portioii adapted to be seated at the apex of said recess on the extending portion of the bottle wire.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence o two subscribing witnesses.
