To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY L. BLIss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reynoldsville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Siphons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in water distribution, and has for its leading object the provision of an improved automatically controlled siphon for maintaining a constant supply in the upper tank and preventing the entire emptying by the siphon, whereby the siphon will at all times be in operative condition, and further for preventing the undue filling of the lower tank or receptacle by the siphon.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an improved siphon which may be readily placed in position to connect a pair of tanks or receptacles disposed at different heights and which will automatically check its operation before either the upper tank is emptied or the lower tank flooded.
A further object of my invent-ion is to provide an improved valve and valve guide which may be quickly and easily secured to the siphon at its shorter leg or end to automatically control the entrance of the water into the said end.
Other objects and advantages of my improvement in water distributing siphons will be readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the structure shown and described within the scope of the claim without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my complete siphon, Fig. 2 represents a top plan view thereof, Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of the lower tank, Fig. 4 represents a sectional view on the line ll of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 represents a plan view of the blank from which the upper valve guide is formed, and Fig. 6 represents a perspective View of the lower valve and valve guide.

ing into the tank 2, the band 19 being secured on the end of the siphon and having the guide arms 20 for guiding the U-shaped valve rod 21 hearing the float 22 for raising the valve 23 to stop the operation of the siphon before the tank 2 has been completely filled or flooded, the band having depending arms 24: with inwardly bent portions 25 to limit the downward movement of the valve and form guides therefor.
Secured on the shorter leg of the siphon pipe 8 is the elbow 4: having its mouth 5 proj ecting upwardly, while secured around the elbow is the flexible metal band 6. Said band 6 has its ends bent outwardly to provide the ears 7 through which are formed the apertures 8 for receiving the bolts 9 which clampingly secure the band to the elbow 5. Said band has formed integral therewith the long arm 10, the shorter arm 11 and a-third still shorter arm 12. When the band is secured in position on the elbow, said three arms project upward around the elbow, and the arms 10 and 11 have their end portions 12 bent at right angles thereto and projecting over the mouth of the elbow, said portions 12 having the apertures 13 formed therein and disposed in alinement with each other while, slidably engaged in said apertures 13 and guided thereby is the rod 14: bearing upon its upper end the ball float 15 and having secured on its lower end by the clamping nuts 16 the weighted valve disk 17 adapted to seat against the mouth 5 of the elbow to close said mouth and prevent entrance of water into the siphon.
By reference to the drawings, it will be seen that the arms 10, 11 and 12 serve as guides for the valve 17, and the arm 12 has the inwardly bent upward end 18 projecting into the path of movement of the valve 17 and serves to limit the upward movement of the valve caused by the rising of the float 15, the valve being thus held in position by the various arms of the band 6 and reciproeating between the end 18 of the arm 12 and the mouth 5 of the elbow 4:.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the construction of my improved water distributing siphon will be readily understood, and it will be seen that as the water falls in the tank 1 the weight of the valve will cause it to close the entrance of the siphon pipe and thus prevent the entire emptying of the tank 1, whereby air will be prevented from entering the siphon to interfere with the operation thereof, While the position of the lower end of the siphon with respect to the top of the tank 2 prevents the flooding of said tank by the siphon as before described. It will further be observed that I have provided an improved combined guide and abutment member for retaining the valve of the siphon in correct position and for limiting its reciprocal movement.
I claim:
The combination with a pair of tanks disposed at different levels, of a siphon connecting said tanks and projecting into the lower'tank, an elbow secured to the end of the siphon within the upper tank, a band clamped around the elbow, said band having a plurality of arms of different lengths formed integral therewith, said arms having inwardly bent upper ends, certain of said 20 inwardly bent ends having apertures formed therein, a valve rod slidably engaged in the apertures, a float secured to the upper end of the valve rod, a weighted valve secured to the lower end of the valve rod, and one 25 of the arms of the band having an inwardly extending end for limiting the upward movement of the valve.
