b all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, CLAUDE A. P. TURNER, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and in the State of Minnesota, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Concrete Buildings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full` clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to buildings of reinforced concrete, and more particularly to the reinforcement of the floor slabs, and my object is to so reinforce the slab as to diminish or lessen 'the quantity of material required, while securing a certain desired ex tei-nal form, and to this end m invention consistsin the arrangement ofy reinforce ment substantially as hereinafter specified and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a toplan view of a column supported slab having reinforcements embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a vertical section thereof with portions or fragments of the columns shown. Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing the reinforcement for an embodiment of my invention in which no columns are used.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, there are columns C of reinforced concrete or other construction, and a floor slab S of reinforced concrete. 0n the under side of the slab are ribs R that extend from column to column, and which may be structural steelbeams, or beams of reinforced concrete, and if the latter, as shown they are preferably formed integral with tbe floor slab S. Extending from one rib to an ad'acent one, contiguous to a column` are reinforcing rods or bars f that constitute a sort of head or framework, substantially concentric with the ycolumn from which said ribs radiate, and across said reinforcementsl from one column to another, extend belts ot` parallel rods or bars o', that extend in diagonal directions inter- Secting at the ticnter of the slab or panel be tween a group of four columns, and which reduce tbe bending moment in the central portion of the slab, the action of said belts of rods d, supported they are by the ribs lt, being that of the cantaliver. In view for the support of the reinforcements of the slab, it will be evident that my invenP` tion is applicable to a panel supported by beamsinstead of a floor supported by columns, and the scope determined in the light of this statement; Such a construction 1s shown in AF ig. 3, in which a single rectangular panel is shown bounded by the four su ports R1. At each of the four corners o the rectangle, the open frames forI the belts of diagonal rods d that shorten the diagonal span, are composed of parallel, Aobliquely 'arranged rods f that extend between the ribs, and by beam action transmit the slab diagonal belts d to the supports upon'iwhieh said frame-forming rods f1 rest. Instead of arranging the rods f in the form of squares, said rods may be given a circular form, the essential mattei' in this connection being the extension of the rods f across from one rib to an adjacent one or across the corners of the panels as thereby the spaniin a diagonal direction is shortened, and it is also to be understood that other forms of reinforcements than rods or'bars may be employed, without departure from the scope of my invention. I make no broad claim herein to the system of reinforcement bywhich aJcantaliver action for the support of the slab is secured, inasmuch as this and other characteristics of my slab reinforcement are the subject of a pending application, Serial No. 378,444, filed June l, 1906, in which l'ast named application the broad claires are made.
The fundamental characteristic of my invention can well be pointed out in comparison with the prior art, as found in the patent to Matria No. 634,986 dated Oct. 17, 1899. By the provision of rods cutting across the corners of the panel, I secure the transmission by beam action of the load from the slab to the slab supports, or beams at` the Sides of the panel, the resplt being that I increase. the bem ing moment of the beams, for the loatl is thus transmittedtof ward the longitudinal center of the side supports or beams.
