To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, James E. MORSE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canandaigua, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Blade-Sharpener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a new and improved form of blade sharpener, and an object of my invention is to provide a sharpener having removable cut-ting tools with duplicate edges which may be removed and. ground at will.
A further object of my invention is to provide a cutting device for use in sharpening knives, so as to continuously present a new cutting surface to the device which is being sharpened as desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device in which the cutting tools are held in position at a predetermined angle.
I attain the above outlined objects by disposing a pair of triangle-shaped cutting tools on a face plate and disposing in front of the cutting tools a sliding front plate having guiding edges, so arranged relative to the cutting edges of the tool that there will be formed an angular-shaped opening between the cutting edges. The sliding front plate will admit of a lowering of the cutting edge, thereby presenting a new cutting point at the apex of the opening when desired.
lVith the above and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of'construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a side view of one of the cutting tools; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1, with the side front plate removed, and Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the sliding front plate.
Described more in detail, I have shown a support 8 upon which is mounted a bed plate 9 having a pair of depending U-shaped yokes 10, said U having a jam nut in one leg thereof, by means of which the bed plate is clamped to the support. Extending up from the support is a face plate 12 having a pair of U-shaped recesses 13 extending downwardly from its upper edge and forming between them a projection 14, which projection has an aperture 23 adjacent its lower end. Each end of the face plate 12 has an inwardly and downwardly-inclined shoulder 15 extending from the outside of said plate to the recess 13. Above each of the shoulders 15, the plate 12 is apertured, as shown at 16, through which apertures pass bolts 17, which bolts firmly clamp an equilateral-triangle-shaped cutting tool 18 in position with one of the beveled edges 19 of the cutting tool resting on the shoulder 15. The face plate 12 has a ridge 20 extending across the same, to form a stepped arrangement with the shoulder 15, on which ridge is positioned a sliding front plate 21, which sliding front plate has an elongated slot 22 disposed centrally therein and adjacent its lower edge. Disposed in the slot 22 and extending through the apertures 23, is a bolt 24. By this construction, it is possible for the plate 21 to have a limited transverse movement relative to the plate 12, and to be clamped in position by said bolt 24.
Extending upwardly from the central part of the plate 21, is an upwardly and inwardly-converging extension, the converging edges 26 of which are beveled forwardly. Extending upwardly from the ends of the plate 21 are guiding plates 27, adapted to bear on the side face of. the cutting tool 18 to coact with the upper edge of the plate 21, to hold the cutting tool in position on the shoulder 15. It will be seen that the inclination of the edge 28 of the cutting tool 18 is so disposed with reference to the guiding edge 26' of the front plate 21, that an angular opening will be formed therebetween. In this V-shaped opening is disposed a knife or other blade to be sharpened, and by drawing the knife back and forth through this opening, the edges 19 will sharpen the knife by shaving off from the cutting edge of the knife, microscopic particles of the blade.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A blade sharpener, comprising a face plate having a series of recesses extending downwardly from its, upper edge and having a pair of inclined shoulders extending downwardly and inwardly from the outer edge to each of said recesses, a pair of equilaterally shaped cutting tools, each having one edge resting on each of said shoulders, means removably holding each of said cut ting tools in position with one of its edges extending into one of said recesses, a front plate disposed in contact with said cutting tools and having a transversely adjustable engagement with said face plate, and an eX- tension on said front plate, said extension having a pair of beveled edges extending at an angle to the edge of the tool within the recess adapted to coact with the beveled edges on the cutting tools to afford a means for guiding and sharpening a knife blade inserted between said beveled edges.
2. In a sharpening device, a bed plate adapted to be fastened to a support, having an upwardly-extending face plate, a cutting tool having a cutting edge, fastened to said face plate, and a front plate having a transversely disposed engagement with said face plate, said front plate having a guiding edge thereon positioned adjacentand at an angle to the cutting edge of said tool, to form with said tool, an angularly shaped opening through which opening is adapted to be drawn a blade to be sharpened by contact with said edges, said front plate permitting a new cutting point of contact to be presented to the blade to be sharpened desired.
3. In a knife sharpener, a face plate, having an opening therethrough, an equilateraltriangle-shaped cutting tool disposed on said plate with an edge projecting over said opening, and a front plate adjustable with reference to said face plate, said front plate having a guiding edge angularly disposed with reference to the cutting edge of the tool, to form between said edges, an angularly shaped opening, whereby when a knife to be sharpened is placed in said opening, a new cutting edge may be presented to the knife, and said tool and plates are mutually braced in position.

In a knife sharpener, a face plate, a tool having a cutting edge disposed on said plate, a front plate adjustable with reference to said face plate, said front plate having a guiding edge angularly disposed with reference to the cutting edge of the tool, to form between said edges, an angularly shaped opening, whereby when a knife to be sharpened is placed in said opening, the adjustment of the front plate will present a new cut-ting point at the apex of said opening, and means removably holding said tool on said face plate.
