RAZOR-STROPPING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. HoRNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have new and useful Razor-Stropping Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art, to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to razor-stropping devices; and it may be said to consist in the provision of the novel features and in the novel and improved construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will be apparent from a consideration of the description and claims hereinafter.

One object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction for a device of the character specified in which the razor blade holder is actuated to normally hold the razor blade away from and out of contact with the strop and is adapted to be directly actuated by the strop when a pull is exerted on one end portion of the strop to throw the razor blade to have the edge portion of said blade contact with the other end portion of the strop which moves in the opposite direction from that on which the pull is exerted.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of the class specified which is simple in construction and economical to manufacture, marketable at a low price, strong and durable in use, easy to manipulate, effective in action, and which may be used with minimum danger of damage to razor blades.

Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description of the preferred form of construction in which the invention may be embodied, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device having the invention applied thereto; the razor blade holder being shown thrown to one side, and Fig. 2 is a section of the device taken adjacent to one of its sides and shows the razor blade holder in the central or normal position thereof.

substantially at right angles to the portion 3, the side portions 4 preferably having the central portion thereof cut away to admit of a view of the parts arranged on the in terior thereof. Extending between and arranged substantially centrally on the side portions 4: adjacent to the portion 3 is a rod 5 having loosely mounted thereon a sleeve 6 over which the strop 7 passes. To each side of the rod 5 on the side portions .4 may be arranged pairs of

8 and 9 similar to the rod 5 and having thereon like sleeves 6; the rods 8 being substantially oppositely disposed at the end of said side portions remote from the rod 5 and the rods 9 being arranged intermediate of the rod 5 and the rods 8 and substantially in alinement with the rods 8. Pivotally mounted substantially centrally near the end of the side portions 4 remote from the rod 5 is a razor blade holder 10 which may consist of a single piece of stamped out metal plate formed to provide side portions 11, a portion 12 extending between the side portions 11, and jaws 13 bent to extend from the portion 12 in a direction opposite to that of the side portions 11 and having their free ends spaced near together and preferably provided with an exterior bevel 14. At the end of the side portions 11 remote from the portion 12 are tially oppositely disposed rods 15 arranged nearer together than the rods 8 and having loosely mounted thereon the sleeves 16. As shown the holder 10 is preferably mounted on. the pivot 17 extending between the side portions a and passing centrally through the side portions 11 12. A spring finger ranged between the adjacent to the portion 18 may be suitably ar- 7 jaws 13 to yieldingly hold arazor blade in position in said jaws, and a ring 19 may be suitably atfixed substantially centrally on the portion 3 of the frame 2 for removably attaching the device to a stationary hook or the like (not shown).

In using the device, the strop 7 being arranged as shown to pass over the sleeve 6 on the rod 5 and having the exterior side ofits end portions in contact with the sleeves 6 and 16 on the

9 and 15 respectively and having the interior side of said end portions in contact with the sleeve 6 on the rod 8, it will be seen that a pull exerted on either end portion of the strop will cause it to press against the sleeve 16 adjacent thereto and thereby throw the jaws 13 of substanthe holder 10 toward the interior side of the other end portion of the strop whereby the edge of a razor blade inserted between said jaws maybe brought into contact with 5 said interior side of the strop and sharpened by the movement of the strop against but away from the edge of the razor blade. It will be noted that a very slight pull on either end portion of the strop tends to move the holder toward the other end portion of the strop and that thereby is avoided any danger of the razor blade cutting and damaging the strop.

While one form of construction in which the invention may be embodied has been particularly illustrated and described, there are many changes and modifications thereof that will readily occur to those skilled in the art, and the right is therefore reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a frame comprising a cross portion and side portions substantially at right angles to the cross portion, a rotatable member extending between and arranged substantially centrally on said side portions adjacent to said cross portion and rotatable members arranged on said side portions to each side of the first rotatable member, a pair of said rotatable members being substantially oppositely disposed near the end of said side portions remote from the first Y rotatable member and a pair of said rotatable members being arranged intermediate of said first rotatable member and the first pair of rotatable members and substantially in alinement with the latter, a razor blade holder pivotally mounted substantially centrally near the end of said side portions remote from said first rotatable member and having side pieces thereon, a pair of rotatable members extending between and disposed substantially oppositely on said side pieces and arranged nearer together than said first pair of rotatable members, and a strop arranged to pass over the first rot-atable member and having the exterior side of its end portions in contact with the second and last mentioned pairs of rotatable members and having the interior side of said end portions in contact with the first mentioned pair of rotatable members, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a frame consisting of a single strip of stamped out metal formed to 60 provide a cross portion and side portions substantially at right angles to the cross portion, a rotatable member extending between and arranged substantially centrally on said side portions adjacent to said cross 65 portion and rotatable members arranged on ranged substantially said side portions to each side of the first rotatable member, a pair of said rotatable members being substantially oppositely disposed near the end of said side portions remote from the first rotatable member and a pair of said rotatable members being arranged intermediate of said rotatable member and the first pair of rotatable members and substantially in alinement withthe latter members, a razor blade holder pivotally mounted on said frame, a pair of rotatable members on said bladeholder, and a strop arranged to pass over the first rotatable member and having the exterior side of its end portions in contact with the second and last mentioned parts of rotatable members and having the interior side of said end portions in contact with the first mentioned pair of rotatable members, substantially as described.

3. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a frame, a razor blade holder pivotally mounted on said frame and formed to provide side portions, a portion extending between the side portions, and jaws bent to extend from said portion in a direction opposite to that of the side portions and having their free ends spaced near together, oppositely disposed rotatable members extending between and arranged at the end of said side members remote from said portion, and a strop arranged movably on said frame and adapted to contact with said rotatable members to move the blade holder to throw said jaws toward the strop when 0 one end of the stop is pulled, substantially as described.

4. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a frame, a razor blade holder pivotally mounted at the lower end of said frame, said razor blade holder formed to provide side port-ions, a portion extending between the side portions, and jaws extending in a direction opposite to that of the side portions, oppositely disposed members extending between and arranged at the end of said side members remote from said portion, and a strop arranged movably on said frame and adapted to contact with said members to move the blade holder to throw said jaws toward the strop when said strop is pulled.

5. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a frame formed to provide a cross portion and side portions substantially at right angles to the cross portion, a rotatable member extending between and arcentrally on said side portions adjacent to said cross portion, rotatable members arranged on said side portions to each side of the first rotatable member, a pair of said rotatable members being substantially oppositely disposed near the end of said side portions remote from the first rotatable member and a pair of said rotatable members being arranged intermediate of said first rotatable member and the first pair of rotatable members and substantially in alinement with the latter members, a razor blade holder pivotally mounted substantially centrally near the end of said side portions remote from said first rotatable member, said razor blade holder formed to provide side pieces, a portion extending between said side pieces, and jaws bent to extend from said portion in a direction opposite to that of the side pieces and having their free ends spaced near together, a pair of rotatable members extending between and disposed substantially oppositely on said side pieces and arranged nearer together than said first pair of rotatable members, a strop arranged to pass over the first rotatable member and having. the exterior side of its end portions in contact with the second and last mentioned pairs of rotatable members and having the interior side of said end portions in contact with the first mentioned pair of rotatable members.
