'Letters Patent No. 102,424, dated April 26, 1870.
dog-.
IMPROVEMENT 1N SUSPENDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN lOLDFIELD, of Norwich,
ingthe back ends, connected by a metallic link; alsov the front ends with metallic stops, for preventing the former from slippingbut ofthe slot of the buckle.
Figure 2 is a view in detail of the front ends of snspender and brace, giving a side or edge view of the metallic stops.
Figure 3 is a view in detail, of metallic connecting-link.
Figure 4 is a view in detail, of the front-end of suspender and brace, showing thev points of metallic stop before they are bent or fastened down.
Figure 5 is a view in detail of metallic stop, show ing its points as struck out.
Like letters in the different figures of the drawings indicate like parts.
My invention relates to the class of suspender-s and braces, in which the `webs thereof are connected by a metallic link, having openings or rings in the two ends of the same, the link being capable of firmly holding the webs and ends of the Suspenders and braces,l
at the same time enabling them to adjust themselves freely to the movements of the wearer, by eiectually resisting the usual strain to the suspender and brace web ends and connections consequent upon and necessary to usual and ordinary fastenings.
It consists in the application or connection of metallic stops to the front ends of Suspenders and braces, in such manner as to prevent said ends from slipping through the slots of the suspendenbuckle, beyond the proper and necessary distance for adjusting the suspenders and braces to the uses of the wearer, by which application the necessary sliding of the suspender and brace ends is attained without the use of web cloth, leather, or any similar attachment or fastening to the underneath ends, and dispensing with all such extra maten'al and consequent sewing usually made use of and necessary, thus effecting a saving of onethird webbing to the manufacturer, and rendering the Suspenders and braces more durable for use.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe itsconstruction and operation.
A' isl the metallic connection between the webs a a,l and the Suspenders and brace ends b b, which metallic connecting-link `may be manufactured from any metal or composition metal suitable therefor, and may be made in one piece, as represented in fig. 3.
The parts of the webs and ends passing through the rings of the metallic connection should be so made as to allow the rings to work easily and freely. f
B B are the metallic stops applied to the suspender and brace ends at c c.
These stops may be made of any metal or composition metal suitable for the purpose. As shown infigs. 4 and 5, the stops are made with sharp points, and fixed to the ends by first pressing the points to apposition hoiizontal with the stops then through thesuspender land brace ends and clinching them on the oppositer side, thus forming an effectual bar to the passage of the suspender and brace ends beyond such stop through the slot of the buckle d.
, The metallic stops maybe of any other shape or affixed to the endsfin any other manner as may be preferred, provided Vit is an attachment of a metallic stop to the ends of Suspenders and braces, by which the necessary and required sliding of said ends is permitted, and the use of leather, cloth, rubber-webbing, or other similar material attachment, to or under the suspender and brace ends, or any sewing on the same, as commonly used and necessary, is entirely done away with.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The application of metallic stops B B, or their I equivalents, with the suspender and brace-ends cc, substantially as and for the purpose set forth'.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing as my iuvent tion, I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
` EDWIN OLDFIELI). Witnesses: .I
J As. B. Corr. GEO. H. SPALDING.
