Be it known that I, ELI M. SMrrI-r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Union, in the county of Cass and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in lift pumps.
One object of the invention is to provide a pump of this character having an im proved construction and arrangement of pumping or water lifting mechanism, by means of which water may be readily lifted to and discharged in a steady or continuous flow at any desired elevation.
Another object is to provide a pump of this character, which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, efli cient, and reliable in operation and which may be employed in a well, pond, stream or other body of water, whereby the water may be pumped or elevated therefrom for domestic purposes, supplying reservoirs, ir' rigating or any other purpose.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and linally pointed out in the appended claims, it being further understood that changes in the spe ciic structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a side view of my improved pump showing the same arranged in a well. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the pump cylinders and the parts connected thereto, showing one of the cylinders in section. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same taken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of one of the pistons of the pumping cylinders.
My improved pump vcomprises cylinders 1 and 2, which are connected at their upper ends by branch pipes 3, to a main water conducting and discharge pipe 4, which may be of any desired length and which is connected at its upper end to the pump stock 5. connected inner perforated water inlets and piston guiding pipes 6, which extend downwardly a suitable distance below the lower ends of the cylinders as shown. In the branch pipes 3 are arranged valve casings 7, containing check valves 8, whereby the Water forced up into the main pipe from the cylinders is prevented from returning or running back into the cylinders.
Slidably engaged with the cylinders 1 and 2 are pistons 9, having therein centrally disposed tapered passages 10. The upper ends of the pistons form seats with which are engaged check valves 11, in the form of disks, having rounded outer surfaces and flat seat engaging surfaces as shown. On the lower sides of the valves are formed depending guide studs 12, which prevent the displacement of the valves. Ihe valves are further held in position to engage the seats on the pistons by cages 13, which are preferably in the form of spiders having depending legs threaded on the inner sides of their lower ends and adapted to be screwed into engagement with the threaded outer surfaces of the upper ends of the pistons as clearly shown in Fig. et of the drawings. On the lower ends of the pistons are formed annular radially projecting flanges 14, between which and clamping rings 15, are secured the inner edges of lower packing rings 16, the outer portions of which lit into annular recesses 17, in the outer sides of the clamping rings 15 as shown. Between the upper edges of the rings 15 and the ends of the cages 13 are secured the inner edges of the upper packing rings 18, which fit up against the lower outer sides of the valve cages as shown. When thus arranged the packing rings will closely lit the inner surface of the cylinders.
Riveted or otherwise firmly secured in the pistons are the bifurcated upper ends of the piston rods 19, which extend downwardly through the inner perforated guide pipes 6 and are connected at their lower ends to outer perforated water inlet and piston pipes 20, which are slidably engaged with the inner perforated guide pipes 6. The ends of the piston rods 'have a screw threaded engagement with screw plugs 21, which are connected by coupling sleeves 22, with the threaded lower ends of the outer guide pipes 20. The ends of the piston project a slight distance beyond the plugs 21 and have screwed thereon locking nuts 23, whereby the rods are prevented from becolning unscrewed from the plugs 2l.
The pistons 9 are provided with operating devices comprising bails or yokes 24,--
which are slidably engaged with upper and lower guide brackets 25, secured to upper and lower ends of the cylinders. The lower ends of bails or yokes 24 are secured to the upper ends of the outer piston guiding pipes 20 by cross heads 2G, as shown, whereby when the bails are moved up and down the outer pipes 2O will be reciprocated on the inner pipes 6, thereby moving the pistons up and down in the cylinders. lVhen thus operated, the pistons will on their down strokes, permit water to enter the cylinders by lifting or opening the check valves ll and on the up strokes said pistons will lift or force the water above the same up out of the cylinders and past the check valves 8 in the branch pipes 3, which will hold each successive charge of water forced past the same and into the main conducting and discharging pipe et. The successive charges of water thus forced or lifted into the discharge pipe will fill the latter and overflow from the discharge spout of the pump stock with which the pipe 4: is connected, as will be readily understood. On the up and down strokes of the pistons and the outer guide pipes 2O the perforations in the latter will be brought into register with the perforat-ions in the inner guide pipes 6, thus permitting the water to freely enter the pipes and cylinders.
The bails or yokes 24 may be operated in any suitable manner to reciprocate the pistons in the manner described, said bails being here shown and are preferably pivotally connected at their upper ends to operating rods 27, which are connected at their upper ends to a double ended operating lever 28, pivoted midway between its ends to a bearing bracket 29, on the upper end of the pump stock as shown. By thus connecting the rods to the lever it will be seen that when the lever is rocked the pistons will be alternately raised and lowered and a continuous column of water thus raised and discharged through the pipe 4.
While I have herein shown the operating rods 27 connected with the hand lever 28, it will be understood that the same may be connected with and operated by an engine or any other suitable power.
` From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construct-ion may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described (my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
l. In a pump of the character described, a main water conducting pipe, valved branch pipes connected to said main pipe, cylinders connected to said branch pipes, inner Vperforated piston guiding pipes connectedY to lower end lof said cylinders, outer perforated piston guiding pipes slidably engaged with said inner pipes, valved pistons slid- -`ably engaged with said cylinders and having an operative connection with said outer guide pipes and means to reciprocate said outer pipes and pistons.
2. In a pump of the character described, a main water conducting pipe, valved branch pipes connected to said main pipe, cylinders connected to said branch pipes, inner perforated piston guiding pipes connected to the lower end of saidcylinders, outer perforated piston guiding pipes slidably engaged with said inner pipes, valved pistons slidably engaged with said cylinders, piston rods extending downwardly from said pistons through said inner guide pipes and having an operative connection at their lower ends with said outer pipes, operating bails connected to said outer pipes and means whereby said bails and pipes are operated Yto reciprocate said pistons.
3. In a pump of the character described, a pump stock, having a discharge spout, a main water elevating pipe connected with said stock, branch pipes connected to the lower ends of said main pipe, check valves in said branch pipes, cylinders connected with the latter, inner perforated piston guiding pipes secured to the lower ends of said cylinders, outer perforated piston guiding pipes, slidably mounted on said inner pipes, valved pistons slidably mounted in said cylinders, piston rods to connect said pistons with said outer guiding pipes whereby the pistons are reciprocatedin said cylinders, operating bails 'connected with said outer pipes, guide brackets to slidably secure said bails to the cylinders, an operating lever pivoted on said pump stock and operating rods to connect said lever with said bails whereby the latter are actuated to reciprocate said outer guiding pipes to pistons.
