Be it known that I, CHARLES F. FRAN- cisco, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, havezinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Pile Splicing and Driving Devices, of which the following is a specification:

piles, and theobjects are, first, to provide'v simple, durable, and easily installed devices for splicing the ends of two sections ofA a pile together, second, to provide` such adevice for facilitating the driving 'of concrete piles, and third, to provide sucha device for driving piles where it is desired, to leave the top end below the surface of the water or the earth.
With these and other'objects in View, as will appear, my invention consists of certain novel feature's of construction,combination and arrangement of parts as ivill be hereinafter described in detail and'v particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which z Figure l is a s'ectional view of my device, Fig. 2 is a sectional View thereof through A-B in Fig/1, and Fig. 3 is an elevational view showing a pile in sections, showing my device connecting the ends of two pile sections together, and showing a wooden cushion in connection with' one of them to facilitate the driving of concrete piles.

My device consists of plastic material 1,.
preferably concrete, shaped as 'shown best in Figs. 1 and 2 and provided with ahole in` each end, l*1 and lb. It is ellipsoidal shaped except that the ends are iat, and it is provided near its outer surface with a woven wire reinforcement 2, which extends around the same. Inside of said reinforcement surrounding the holes land l", are a plurality of reinforcingbars 3, shaped as shown best in Figs. 1 and 2. The ends of these bars 3 are connected by means of plate 3, which is provided with holes into which said ends are inserted, so that the ends overlap can other therein. In this 4ca se I have shown six of said bars. These reinforcing bars are preferably made offtivisted steel, and the inner members thereof are connected together in their relativ'ge 'positions by means of a plurality of connecting bars Al, and their outer members are connected together by a plurality .of connectingI bars 5. In case it` is desired to splice two members of a pile, one end of the member-:is placed .in one of the holes 1a or lbof the device, andl one end .of

In case?` itis desired to use this device for drivingffpiles, the upper end the other member is placed in the other hole of the pilel is placed in onelof the'holes la or lb, and inthe other hole is placed a short wooden pile 6, as shown in Fig. 3., This pile 6 acts as a'cushion'betwcen the pile'driver and the concrete pile, Aand it and the device may both be removed .after the pile is driven. vIt will be readily seen that this device is simple of construction, easily installed for use and if composed .of concrete, reinforced as described and shown, it is very strong and substantial. l
Though l have shown and described a particular construction and reinforcement, Il do not wish to be limited to this construction and reinfoncement, but desire to include in my inventipn, the construction and reinforcemeint substantially as set forth in the appended claims. j
, Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to lsecure by Letters Patent is 1.-A pile splicing and driving device comprising, an ellipsoidal shaped piece made ofgplast-ic material, provided with a hole in eachy end, longitudinally andlaterally reinforced, all substantially as set forth.

A pile splicing and driving device comprising, an ellipsoidal shaped 'concrete piece,. provided with a hole in each end, extending nearly to the center, woven wire reinforcement near the' outer surface of said plastic fpiece, longitudinal reinforcements between sald holes and sald outer surface and connecting reinforcements, all substantially as set forth.
