To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Amman C. 0. BOOK, a. subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin Counting and Wrappl Machines; and I do hereby declare the 0 lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable 0t ers skilled in the art to which it'appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in coin counting and wrapping machines; and theinvention relates, more particularly, to a simple, cheap, accurate and eflicient machine for counting out a required number of coins and delivering the same to paper cartons or rolls adapted to envelop the same, so as to pro vide a package or roll of a specific number of coins.
The present invention has for itsprincipal object to provide an accurate coin-counting and wrapping machine comprising a hop er and stacking mechanism, a countlng mec anism which counts the coins from the stack formed by said ,stacking mechanism, and a wrapping device to which the coins are fed by said counting mechanism.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a coin-counting mechanism which can be arranged to count a desired number of coins, and which is self-locking, when said desired number of coins have been counted, thereby rendering the machine locked against operation until said self-locking mechanism has been released from its locking relation.

Re erring now to the said rawings, the reference-character 1 indicates one complete coin-counting and wrapping machine made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the said machine comprising a pair of side-framesQ, between which is supported a bottom-plate 3. Also suitably supported between the said sideframes 2, so as to register above said bottomplate 3, is a carrier-plate 4, and suitably arranged and supported across the top of said side-frames 2 is an inclined bed-plate 5 for the supporting thereon of a hopper, as will wheel- 9, and suitably supported beneath the said bed-plate 5 is a counter-shaft 10, upon' the outer end of which is mounted a pulleywheel 11 which is driven from said pulleywheel 9, by means of a belt-connection 12. Rotatably supported upon the said bed-plate 5 is a revolving hopper 13, which is provided with a spindle 14 journaled in said bed-plate 5 and a bracket-member 15 secured to the underside of said bed-plate 5. The said spindle 14 carries a bevel-gear 16 which meshes with a bevel-pinion tl'fliwhich is fastened upon the said counter-shaft 10, all for the purpose of revolving said hopper 13 upon said bed-plate 5, when said counter- .shaft 10 is rotated. The bottom of said hopper 13 is provided with a plurality of holes or openings 18 which are located adjacent to the side-Walls of the hopper, and the bedplate 5 is provided with a suitably located opening or hatch 19 registering in the path of the said holes or openings 18 of the hopper, as the hopper is being revolved2 f i Connected with the underside- 16f, said bed-plate 5, so as to register beneath said opening or hatch 19, is theiunnel-portion 20 of a coin-stacking device, said stacking device comprising a tubular member 21 which is suitably connected with the lower end. of saidfunnel-portion 20, and is provided at its lower end with a socketed portion 22 adapted to receive one end of a tube 23, made of glass or any other suitable transparent material. Connected with the lower end of said tube 23 is a socket-piece 24, the inner walls 25 of which incline downwardly and in an outward direction. Said socket-piece 24 is received in the receiving opening 26 of a guide-plate 27 which is suitably secured upon said carrierplate4, said guide-plate 27 being also cutaway upon its under side so as to provide a coin-passage 28 having a properly curved guide-wall 29. Suitably secured, in" the proper location, t'o-the under side of the said carrier-plate4is a bearing-member 30 in which is journaled a vertically disposed s indle 31, which projects upwardly t rough said carrier-plate 4, and the upper end of which is formed with a squared or similarly formed shank 32. Arranged upon said spindle 31, so as to be presentedbeneath said carrier plate 4, is a bevel-pinion 33 which is in mesh with and is driven by a bevel-gear 34 which is secured upon said driving shaft 7. Removably connected upon the said shank 32 of the spindle 31 1s a kicker-disk 35 which is provided with a plurality of outwardly extending kickerarms 36, said disk 35 being arranged so as to rotate in contact with the upper surface of the said carrier-plate 4, and being maintained in such relation by means of a coiled spring 37 which encircles the said square s ank 32, between said kicker-disk and a washer and screw 38 secured to the free end of said uare shank. The kicker-arms 36 of said kicker-disk 35 travel in said coinpassage 28 formed in said guide-plate 27 and tend to pro el the coins, one at a time, as they are delivered into said coin-passage 28 from said coin'stacki device to their operative engagement wit the coincountin mechanism. Said coin-counting mechanism comprises the followin devices. Rotatably mounted upon the sai carrierplate 4, so as to rotate in contact with the upper surface of the latter, is a counterdls 39, the periphe of which is cut out to provide a series 0 depressions 40, each depression corresponding with a portion of the circumferential ed e-portions of the coins to be counted... ivotally mounted upon said carrier-plate 4 is a s rin -actuated pawl or dog 41, the rounded en 42 of which rides in engagement with said depressions 40 formed in the periphery of said counter-disk 39. Connected with the shank 43 of said counter-disk 39 is a inion 44 which meshes with a gear-whee 45 mounted upon a squarespindle 46, said spindle extending downwardly through said carrier-plate 4 and being journaled m a bracket-member 48 which is secured to the under side of said carrierlate 4. Connected with said square spin le 46, so as to be located between the under side of said carrier-plate 4 and said bracket-member 47,
is a lock-disk 48 which is provided with. a bolt-receiving cut-out portion 49 which extends in an inward direction from the circumferential edge-portion of said disk. Arranged over said gear-wheel 45 and the greater portion of said counter-disk 39 is a casing 50, said. casing being provided with an opening 51 through which projects a portion of the periphery of said counter disk 39. Secured upon the upper surface of said casing 50, or to any other suitable part, is a bracket 52 upon which is supported a total-adder device 53, the pinion 54 of which meshes operatively with a drivingpinion 55 which is secured to the shank 43 of said counter-disk 39. Arranged upon the under side of said carrier-plate 4, in a con- 'venient location, is a guide-block 56, in the amps-1 channel 57 of which is slidably' arranged and supported a lock-bolt 58 adapted to be tion of the circumference or periphery of.
said lock-disk and thereby retain said lockbolt in its withdrawn position, (as indicated by the dotted representation of said lockbolt shown in Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawings) until said lock-disk 48 has been caused to make -a revolution. The means for producing this slight lateral movementor oscillation of said lock-bolt 58 comprises the coiled spring 60, one end of which is connected with said lock-bolt and the other end being anchored at any convenient stationary point. Pivotally secured to the under side of said carrier-plate 4 is a lever or arm 61, the handle-portion 62 of which projects beyond the forward edge of said carrier-plate. Said lever or arm 61 is connected with said lock-bolt 58 by means of a connecting link 63, and when operated, is returned to its normal initial position by means of a coiled spring 64, the one end of which is connected with said lever. or arm, and the other end' of which is anchored at any convenient stationary point.
Journaled between the said bottom-plate 3 and the carrier-plate 4 is a vertical shaft 65, upon which are mounted a pair of frame-plates 66 which are adapted to support a plurality of tubular carton-holders 67 each holder being adapted to receive and retain therein, a carton or roll 68 of paper or other suitable material into which the counted coins are to be fed. Each carton or roll 68 is provided with a closed end or bottom-portion 69, but said cartons or rolls are open at. their upper ends. The tubular carton-holders 67 are adapted to be revolved by the rotation of the shaft 65, so as to successively present the same, beneath and in registration with a coin-passage 70 formed by a coin-chute 70 in said carrierplate 4, the said coin-passage 70 being adapted to receive the coins as they pass through and are counted by the coin-counting mechanism, and the coins are carried or propelled to said coin-passage 70 by the operation of the kicker-arms 36 of said kicker disk 35, hereinabove mentioned. The means for operating the said tubular cartonholders 67, to present the same beneath said coinpassage 70, comprises a ratchet-wheel 71 which is secured upon said shaft 65, said ratchet-wheel being engaged by a springactuated pawl 72 carried by the lever or arm 61, said pawl serving to propel the said tubular carton holders when said lever or arm isoscillated. Se-cured upon the under side of said carrier-plate 4, in any convenient location, is a spring-actuating dog 73, which enga 'ng the teeth of the said ratchetwheel 71 t ereby prevents any backward movement'of the said carton holders, as will' be clearly evident. Connected with the under side of said lever or arm 61 is a sto or brake-projection 74 having a' serrated edge 75 which, when said lever or arm is moved into its operatedposition, (as indicated by 1t's dotted representation as shown in Fig. 4 of the accom 'anyin drawings), engages the teeth of tl ie ratc et-wheel 71 and thus prevents any rotation'ther'eof and consequent-1y also prevents any rotation or movement of the carton-holders while the coins are. bein fed into the said holders. which serves to catch the coin-filled cartons, as they drop from the carton-holders 67 when the same are carried into registration 'with said carton receiver 76.
As it is often desirable to rotate the hopper 13, without at the same time operating said coin-propellin and counting mechanism, thedriving s aft 7 is mountedso as to be capable of a slight longitudinal shift or sliding movement in its bearings, which shift or sliding movement is produced by pulling outwardly upon the handle or crank-member 8, so as to disconnect the meshing relation of the bevel gear 34 with the bevel pinion 33, and thereby permitting the pulley-wheel 9 to be revolved without operating the kicker-disk 35. The coiled spring 77, arranged between said bevel gear 34 and the hanger 6, serves to return and maintain said shaft 7 in its normal position. By thus being enabled to operate said hopper 13, before operating said coin-propelling and counting mechanism, the stacking device may be filled with coins before beginning the counting and wrapping operations, thereby assuring a continuous and uninterrupted feeding ofthe coins to said coincounting mechanism. It is also sometimes desirable to operate the coin-counting and wrapping mechanism without revolving said hopper 13; and, to this end, said belt 12 is maintained in its driving condition by means of a belt-tightening device which can; be released from its tightening relation with said belt. The said releasable belttightening device comprises a supportingplate 78 which is provided with perforated ears or lugs 79 for slidably supporting a plate 80 with relation thereto, and upon which is mounted an idler-roller 81 which is adapted to engage with the said belt 12. The plate 80, with its idler-roller 81, is maintained in its operative relation to said belt 12, against the compression of a releasing spring 82, by means of a nosingfig.

larly, of vFig. of the accompanying drawand wrapping machine, herein-above described in detail operates, in performing its functions, in the following mannerr-The openings 18, lying flat therein and upon the I surface of the bed-plate 5. The revolving hopper 13 slides the coins up toward the opening or hatch 19, through. which they fall into said stacking-device, the coins being stacked'therein one u on another, with the bottom coin lying in t e' com passage 28 of the guide-plate 27 and in the path of the kicker-arms 36 of said kicker-disk 35. The inclined inner walls 25 of the socketiece 24 of the stacking-device assures the fa ing or delivery of said coins fiat .upon the carrier-plate 4 and within. the coin-passage 28 of the guide-plate 27, since an up ended coin will right itself in the enlarged portion of the passage bounded by said inclined inner walls 25 of said socket-piece.- As has been stated, the tube 23 of the said stackingdevice is transparent, so that the stack of coins is-easily'visible, and hence it can be ascertained at a glance, if a proper supply of coins is being fed to the coin-count1ng mechanism. As above mentioned it is advisable to first fill the stacking device with coins before beginning to count the same, Normally, the counting mechanism is locked against operation; and, to release the same from such condition, the lever or arm 61 is pulled outwardly. This operation performs two functions :first, it withdraws the lockbolt 58 from its lockingengagement with the said lock-disk 48, so that the same may revolve, and, secondly, it operates through the spring-pawl 72, engaging said ratchet-wheel 71, to turn the said carton-holders 67 and register one of the same, with an empty carton or roll 68, beneath said coin passage 70 into which the coins are delivered as they are counted, so that the same are guided into the carton or roll 68. The machine is now set to begin the counting operation, which is performed as follows :The handle or crank 8 is operated to revolve said shaft 7, which through the connecting gearing drives the kicker-disk 35, causing the arms 36 of said disk to kick out the bottom coin 86 of the stack of coinscontained in said stackingdevice and propelling the same through the coin-passage 28 and into en agement with one of the depressions 40 of said countercounter-disk 39,

The lock-disk 48 born arranged so that it is revolved through 51c operation of said gear-wheel 45 also makes one revolution, when fifty coins have passed said counterdisk 39. A complete revolution of said lock-disk 48 carries around said cut-out portion 49 thereof, so that the same is brought opposite said lock-bolt 58, the end of which has been riding upon the periphery of said lock-disk'48, thereby holding out said lever or arm 61;;in its operated position against the pullioff-the sprm 64, and causing the brake-portion 74 to maintained in its holding enga ement with the ratchet-wheel Therefore,

71, as above ascribed; but, as. said cut-out .portio'n registers with the end of the lockbolt 58, the spring 64 ulls said lever or arm 61 back to its norma initial position, and -.thereby thrusts the said lock-bolt 58 into the said cut-out portion 49 of the lock-disk 48, thus locking the same against any further movement, and consequently preventing the kicker-disk from propelling the fifty-first coin past the said counter-disk 39, until the lever or arm 61 is again ulled out to release the said lock-bolt 58, an to set the next carton-holder 67 withits empty carton or roll 68 ready to receive the next fifty coins. It will therefore be clearly apparent, that it is impossible .to operate the coin counting mechanism to count either over or under the desired number of coins, since the kickerdisk will continue to force the coins past the counter-disk until the lock-disk has made a complete revolution; but, when the lock-disk has made such revolution it is automatically locked, whereby a single coin over the exact count will jam against the said counterdisk and will prevent the operation ofsaid kicker-disk. The total-adder device 53 is so geared with the spindle of the counter-disk or roll beneath thecoinassage 70 to which the kicker-disk propels t e coins durin the counting o eration. As the carton-ho 'ders 67 are revo ved, during the course of the op-- eration of the machine, the coin-filled carton or rolls 68 are thereby carried around, until the same register over'the slide of the carton-receiver 76, whereupon gravity acting upon the coin-filled cartons or rolls causes the same to drop out of the carton-holders 67 and into the said carton-receiver 76. Thereupon, the open ends of said'coin-filled cartons or rolls may be over and removed from the machine-by the operator. I
It will be clearly evident, that the counter-disk 39 can be made in different sizes to match the different denominations of coins, so that the same can beinterchanged. This is also true of the gearing and lock-disk, and also of the kicker-disk. The relation of the gearing of the counting mechanism can be arranged so that the lock-disk will complete its revolution when any desired number of coins have passed or been counted, as for example, twenty or forty niekels, quarters .or half-dollars, or fifty pennies or dimes;
and, in fact, any desirable combinations of the numberof coins and their total value, per carton or roll, can be worked out and the machine arranged accordingly.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the $00 a of the present invention as set forth in t e foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended to the same. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said devices and parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In a coin-counting and wrapping machine, a bed-plate, a coin-counting mechanism, means for delivering coins to said counting mechanism, a rotatable lock-disk provided with a bolt-receiving cut-out portion geared in connection with said counting mechanism, said. bed-plate being provided with a coin-passage through which the coins are delivered by said counting ing mechanism, a revolving carton-holder adapted to register cartons successively beneath said coin-passage of said base-plate, a spring-returned lever-arm pivoted beneath said base-plate, a lock-bolt slidably arranged to engage said lock disk and its bolt-receiving cut-out portion, said lockbolt being connected with said lever-arm, so as to be withdrawn upon the operation of said lever-arm, means operated by said lever-arm for revolving said carton-holder, and a brake-device connected with said leverarm for holding stationary said cartonholder when said lock-bolt is withdrawn from its locking relation to said lock-disk to permit of the operation of the coin-counting and delivering mechanisms.
