- members secured in spaced relation to each other, may be adequately inked and cleaned in a minimum of time and will produce an impression free from the spots and edge marks which are the natural consequence of the use of an imperfectly cleaned die. I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which-'- Figure 1 represents a plan view of the holder. and dies in the reversed position, Fig.

Referring to the drawings, let the reference numeral 5 in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 designate a boX die holder, and 6 the set screw which, protruding through one of the sides thereof, into its interior, is employed to secure the die in its adjusted position. The latter, as shown in the drawings, comprises three members 7 formed in their faces with intaglios adapted to conjointly produce an embossed inscription or pictorial representation upon the surface upon which the die is impressed. The members 7 are secured to the holder in spaced relation to each other, either in alinement as is shown in Fig. l, in stepped order as in Fig. 3, 'or in any other desired position on condition that their uper edges are separate from each other and from the surrounding sides of the holder.
The members 7 of the die, illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, may be maintained in spaced relation to each other by means of interposed quadrats 8 or they may be formed at their lower portions, with laterally extending oflisets 9, as is illustrated in the same figures. WVhen the members are mounted upon a flat plate, die holder 10, as in Fig. 4c, the quadrats or other spacing devices may be 5 omitted. When the multlple die is in use,
the faces of the members are covered with ink, or other transferable coloring substance by means of a brush or analogous instrument after which the holder is reversed and the face of the die is rubbed along an abrasive surface, such as coarse paper saturated with turpentine, to remove the superfluous ink, while that contained in the engraved lines remains to be subsequently transferred to the paper or other material upon which the die is forcibly impressed through the instrumentality of a so-called embossing press to which the holder is detachably secured.
The advantages derived from the use of my improved die will be readily understood by those familiar with the art.
During the process of inking the die, the brush which, in practice, is moved back and forth in a direction parallel to the spaced edges of its members, will partly project. over the said edges and thereby keep the sides of the members free of ink, and when the die is subsequently wiped in the manner above described, the spaced arrangement of its members assures an even pressure on every part of its face, while the resilient material over which it is moved will bulge in between each two members and thus effectively remove all ink adhering to their edges. The result is that the impression produced by the die will at all times be free from spots and so called edge marks due to imperfect wiping of its surface and which in case the members of the multiple die adjoin each other could be obviated only by the additional operation of removing the ink from the narrow spaces between them and from those parts of their faces which, owing to a slight difference in the height of the various members, retained the coloring matter after they had been rubbed along the abrasive surface, as hereinbefore described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A multiple die for use in embossing comprising, in combination, a die holder, a plurality of dies shiftably secured thereon, means for setting said dies, and means for spacing the upper edges lying in a common horizontal plane whereby to eliminate inaccessible ink retaining localities, said spacing means comprising ledges interposed between said dies and ledge interposed between the end die and the side of the die-holder.
