Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANS BEER, 0F MUNICH, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM'OF METALLPAPIER- BRONCEFABBEN-BLATTMETALLWEBKE AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, OF MUNICH, GER- METHOD OF MANUFACTURING LEAF METAL FOI'LS.
MANY.
1,023,713, Specification of Letters Patent.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS BEER, citizen of Germany, residing at Munich, Bavaria, Ger many, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Manufacturing Leaf Metal Foils; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description 0 the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to an improved method of manufacturin metal foil in leaf form adapted for embosslng, stamping and like purposes. In the manufacture of such foils it has heretofore been customary to provide a suitable base upon which the metal leaf was spread, and thereafter a thin film of a suitable adhesive substance such as resins, glue and the like in liquid form was run over the leaf lying on its support. This procedure is unsatisfactory in that the liquid adhesive tends to penetrate throu h the metal leaf and come in contact with t e support upon which the latter lies, and when the leaf with its adhesive back ing is removed from the support the leaf is {ornand parts are rendered practically useess.
The main object of my invention is to overcome the defect in the existing method,
and in carrying my invention into practice I first form a suitable layer'or film of thin liquid adhesive material such as gum or glue in any suitable way as by pouri it upon a suitable non-adhering level sur ace and permit this to become partially dry to a sticky or tacky but coherent condition, and when in such partly dried condition I Patented Apr. 16, 1912.
Application filed January 3, 1912. .Serial Nov 669,258.
place on this film or layer of adhesive, a layer of metal leaf, then removing and permitting the adhesive to dry entirely whereby the metal leaf adheres intimately to the adhesive forming with it an entity. Or the film or backing with the metal foil applied thereto may be allowed to dry u on the level nonadhering surface and after drying, the film and foil removed as an entity. thus provide a pliant layer which may be subsequently used for stamping and embossin or for such other purposes as may be desired, there being practically no danger of the metal leaf becoming disengaged from the thin adhesive backing therefor.
I find in practice that a product according to my invention is highly brilliant and is well adapted for many purposes to which such metal leaf foils as heretofore prepared were not adapted.
I claim The method herein described of making metal foil in leaf form which consists in forming a sheet of liquid adhesive material A. V. W. Coma.
