Description

To all whom it may concern.:
Jos-EPH c. CARY, on NEW-Yoan N. Y.
Las Paten: Np. 102,370, daad Apr-i120, 1870.
aPRoveMEN'r 1N STRAP-FASTBNINGS Fon PACKAGES `Elfhe Schedule referred to m these Letters Patent and making part ofthe sarne.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C; CARY, of the city, county; and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Strap Fastening for Packages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andF exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being-hadtotheicompanying drawing forming part of this specilicat-iou, in which drawing- Figure 1 is a cross-section ol' a package to which my improvement is applied,-niy improved strap being shown in said tigurc in longitudinal section.V
Figure 2 is a plan view ol' my invention.
Figure 3 is a cross-sction of my improved strap when made concave.
Similar lette-is indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates-to straps -of metal or other material for securing boxes, barrels, and other pack.
ages; and
It consists in providing such straps with elongated slots extending in the direction ofthe length of the strap. in combination with intermediate holes, in such a manner that where the ,ends of the strap overlap, or where one puit of the strap comes over another pai-t, the same nail -or screw can secure both parts or ends.
My invention further consists in so arranging the length of the slots, and-the spaces between the holes and the slots that, in overlapping, at least one of such holes shall coincide with or be opposite a slot.
My invention also consists in making the exterior or exposed surface o f the strap convex in cross-section.
The letter Alesignatcs my-i'mprovcd strap, which may he manufactured oi any convenient length and afterward cut oli' into shorter lengths, as required for The said strap is provided throughout with slots B andholes C, as shown in the thawing, which are so made und arranged that the distances between the holes shall he less than the length cf the slots, in
order that when any part of the strap 'overlaps anotherv part, at least one hole shall come opposite to or shall coincide with some portion of one of the slots, by which construction and arrangement the necessity for punching o breaking holes in the strap at the time ci' nailing or securing the package is avoided,
and openings are always provided both at the ends and in the. body of the strap through which to insert the nails or screws or' other article used in securing and bind the strap to and around the package.
In' l l have illustrated my invention and the manuel' of applying the same upon a package, the package being marked D.
lMy invention also embraces the modification vof making the nail-holes C also of an elongated form, in which case, however, the security of the fastening must depend ina greater degree on the hold of the head of the nail or screw on the edges of the holes or slots'than when the holesv O are simply round, so as to encircle the nail or screw closely. In both cases, however, the distances of the openings or ,holesA O from the ends ol the slots Bsmnst be less than the length of said slots B. l
'lhestrap A can he made hat, if desired, but I prefer to make it convex in cross-section on lits outer or exposed sin-lace, and 'I place the flat or concave side down, so that the edges of the strap will not catch against the iloor or any object with which the pack- -afe ma come in contact said edges bein r rotccted o i o la by the convex part of the strap, which projects above lthe edges and present-s a rounded surl'aee on the cx tcrior of the strap. v
This construction also enhances the strength of the strap, without increasing t-he amount of material used, when the under sido ot' the strap is made concave, as shown in the drawing.
W'hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf 1. The improved strapfastenng A, provided with slots B lengthwise of the strap, alternating with holes O intermediate of the slots, substantially. as described 2. The slots B and holes C, arnmged in such a manncr that the distances of the holes from the slots shall be less than the length of the slots, substantially J. C. CARY.
as described.
