NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
mmma nz mmmmn, OFNEW' YORK, IN. Y.
CAR-WHEEL.
T0 all whom z't mag; concern Be it k'n0wn tha.t I, FREDRIK LINDBLAD, q1 subjiact of the Kinfg resident of the city 0 New York, borough cf Manhat-t-ari, in the count'y und. Stute cf New York, have invented a. new md Improved Car-Wheel, of which the following und exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invent1on has in view a.re to deaden the noise caused by the a.s sage of me tal carrying-wheels over metaiY rails; to wovide a two-part carrj ing-wheel ha.vin a. shoe separatd from the body of the whee by suitable yielding cushions; t0 provide in a wheel of the character described meanS for conducting electricity from t11e sa.id shoe t0 t-he body of the wheel to complete the electric circuit through the ra.il and wheel.
Reference is to be had 120 the accompanying drawing forming apart of this speoification', i'n which similai-charaeters of reference dex1ote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertioal section taken on the line 1-1 of Fi 2; Fig. 2 is an outer face view of a ca.r w eel oonstructed a.nd zuranged in accordance with the preseni; invention; Fig. 3 is "an Guter faceview of a Wheel cozistrueted in a.ocordanoe with the present invention, a bolting ring with which the wheel is provided being pemoved; Fig. 4 iS a perspective view, in detail, cf the bolting ring for holding the separate mrts of the wheel assembled; Fig. 5 is a etail View in side elevation, showir;g the constructi0n of the b0dy portion of 6 is a detail view in side elevation shov ving the silencing pad employed in the resent inventiori; Fig. 7 is -a detail view m side elevation, of the wearing shbe am wheels -of this cqns truction; an F1g. 8 shows the bolting ring for holding assembled the separable parts 0f the wheel.
As seen in the drslwings, the Wheel is provided with a heav v body portion 12, on which is formed a. brake flar1ge13. The brake flange 13 is preferably extended toward the center 0f the car f0r wnich the wheel is intended, or toward the center of the roadbed. Extended r2tdiplly from the flange 14. The flange 14 is provided to grrn a backing for the vertical extension of the silencing pad employed, while t-he flange 15 with which Speciflcatiqxi cf Letters Patent. Application flled Oc'cober 25, 1911 Schal N0. 656,617.
0f Sweden, und a 'seen 'Whi0h the shoe is prov1 he wheel; Fig.
loyged m wheel. As seen best in Figs.
Patented Apr. 16, 1912.
the bodv 12 is also provided supports the said 1a in its horizontal dis osition. As est in Fig. 5 of the ra wings, the [lange 15 is separated at inteWals to f0rm channels 16, 16. The adjac ent faoes of the langes 14 und 15 are machined to form the uar'e rabbeted recesses, as seen best in F1g. 1 of the drawings.
The pad 17 is best seen in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The pud is provided with horizontal segrnental extensions 18, 18. The extension5, 1841re designed to rest between the portions 0f the flange 15 und the sho.e 0f the wheel. The extens1ons 18 are euch provided at both ends thereof with radial projections 19. The projections 19 fit within the channels 16 when the pad 17 is fitted npon the body 12. The function of the projections 19 is t0 prevent the metallic sont act between the sides of the portions of the flange 15 and the sides 'of th e lugs 20 with 'ded. The lugs 20, 20 extend between the projections 19, 19 into the channels 16, 16. The projections 19, 19 together with the lugs 20, 20, completely and smxgly fill the -channels 16. thereby securing a unity 0f construction and operation between the body und wearing shoe of the wheel.
It is to secure t'he body 12, the pad 17 und the shoe 21 in their assembled relation that I provide the bolting ring 22. The ring 22 is provided witl1' bolt- holes 23, 23, 110 reg1ster with bolt- holes 24, 24 formed in 'the flange 15, to press the shoe 21 against the vertical flange of the pad 17 and theflange 14. The
rin 22 is also furnished with a series of pa. s 25. The pads 25 are shaped and a lined in exfend between the projections 19 und t0 rest upon the lugs 20. toforce the said lugs and shoe 21 connected therewith aga.inst the pad 17 und the flange-J4. The pads 25 ia.re employed instead of metal lugs 01 rojections, to avoid the transmission of t e metallic ibration from the shoe 21 through tl1e ring 22 and the holt securing the same to the body 12 of. the wl'1eel. When the ring 22 is thus positioned, the bolts 26 a.re placed in position and.set u t0 draw the ring 22 securely home, when t e ivheel will be1ound struch1rally cornplete.
When the wheel is employed 011 .vehicles driven by electric traction, I provide coiledspring sections 27, to transmit the current from the. shoe 21 to the body 12 of the 2 und 3 0f the drawings, the spring "se ctions 27 are iigidly mounted upon the portions of the flange 15, to bridge (alle channels 16. \Vhen the lugs 20 of the shoe 21 are placed within the/ 26 and the ring 22 held thereby, when the shoe 21 and the pad 17 may be rem0ved a'nd either or both substituted and the constri1ction reassembled. w
{Itwill b'e observed that by means of this construction, a carrying-wheel is formed in which the traction sound 01 dick and grind of the carrying wheels upon the rail is deadened.
Having thus described my inventionwhat I clajm as new und desire to secure by Letbers' Patent is: 4
1. A Car wh9el having a metal b odyportion provicled with a horizontally e5ctended support-ingflange, said flange having holding recesses formed therein; a flanged weming shoe adapted for mounting upon said s1 1pporting flange. said sh0e having lugs for insulating materml disposed between said shoe and the lugs thereof and said body portion and said recesses.
2. A cax wheel having a metal bod v portion provided with a horizontally extended supporting flange, said fiange having holdingrecesses formed therein; a flanged Wear ing shoe adapted for mounting 'upon said supPorting flange, said shoe havlng lug*s for disposition in said Tecesses; und a sound deadening pad shaped to fit betweeh said body portion, said supporting Hnge, the sides of said recesses, and said wearing shoe und the lugs theteof,
d1sposition in said recesses; and an acoustic 3. A car wheel having a rntal body perpluralitj of pads mounted on said ring to bear upon said higs 011 said shoe.
4. A car wheel having a metal body port1on und provided with a horizdntally extended supporting' flange, said flange havin holding recesses formed therein; a meta wearing shoe adapl zed for mounting u 011 said flange and having lugs t0 extend w1thin the recesses thereof; an acoustic inslating pad disposed between said body ortion, said fiange and said shoe; and a bolting ring adapted to be secured upon said body portion and having acoustic insulating pads mounted thereon to bear upon the lugs of said shoe.
5. A car wheel having a metal body portion and provided with a horizontally extended supporting flange, said flange hav-- ing holding recegses formed therein; a metal wearingshqedapted for mounting u 011 said flng6'and having lugs to extend w1thin said rece'sses; an'acoustic insulating pad disposed between said body ortion, said flange, and said shoe; a bolting ring adapted to be secured upon said body portion and having acoustic insulating pads mounted thereon tobeaf upon t he lugs of said shoe; and a pluralit y of spiral sprixigs rigidly mounted on sa1d supporting flange to bear against said lugslzoform electric circuit between said shoe and said body portion.
In tesfiimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subs cribing wifinesses.
