STATS ATNT i;
JOSEPH M. CHAPMAN, OF MACEDONIA, IOWA.
GOLTEB ATTACHMENT FOR FLOWS.
Application filed November 2, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Macedonia, in the county of Pottawattamie,
position that will permit of the colter clearing such obstruction.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in whicht Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow with the improved colter attachment applied, Fig. 2, a plan View of what is shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3, an enlarged side elevation of a fragment of what is shown in Fig. 1 partly in section with the colter disposed in normal position in full lines and in retracted position in dotted lines, and Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of the clip employed to pivotally connect the colter to the plow beam.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the beam of a plow and 11 the handles which are secured to the beam at the rear end thereof. Depending from the beam 10 on opposite sides of the latter respectively are spaced standards 12 and 13 which carry attheir lower ends respectively the usual plow blades 14. Each of the standards-12 and 13 are strengthened by means of braces 15 one end of which is connected to a respective standard and the other to the beam 10. Secured to the beam 10 forward of the standard 13 and on the same side ofthe beam as said standard is a colter rock arm 16. This rock arm is pivotally held in place upon the beam 10 by means of a U-shaped clip A which has a pivot pin 17 extending inwardly from its bight portion and passing through the rock arm 16. The arms of this U-shaped clip A have their inner faces provided with beveled portions 18 and 19 respectively directed toward the standard 13 and located respectively at the upper and lower sides of the arms of said clip. By reason of the disposition of the beveled portions 18 and 19 the rock arm 16 can swing at its lower end toward the standard 13 a considerable distance, while the opposite movement of the lower end of the rock arm 16 will be limited to a position that will dispose said arm substantially at right angles to the beam 10.
The lower end of the rock arm 16 has secured thereto in any suitable manner a bracket 20 in which is rotatably mounted a colter disk 21. The lower end of the rock arm 16 and of course the disk 21 is held normally at the limit of its forward movement by means of a spring 22 one end of which is secured to the upper end of the rock arm 16 while the other end thereof is anchored to a bolt 23 mounted in the beam 10.
By this construction it will be apparent that should the colter disk 21 hit an obstruction during the use of the plow same will be forced toward the standard 13 against the influence of the spring 22' which will raise the disk 21 and permit the same to clear the obstruction.
While another colter attachment is shown disposed in operative relation to the beam 12 and plow blade 14 same will not be referred to in detail as the construction thereof is identical with the attachment shown and described in connection with the standard 13 and its plow blade.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the character described, the combination of a plow beam, a standard depending from said beam, a plow mounted on the lower end of said standard, a U- shaped clip secured to the side of said beam forward of the standard, a pivot pin eX- tending inwardly of the bight portion of said clip, a rock arm pivoted on said pin having its rocking movement limited by engagement with the inner faces of the arms limit of its movement away from the standof said U-shaped clip, a bracket on the lower ard. 10 end of said arm, a colter disk rotatably sup- In testimony whereof, I aflix my signaported by said bracket, and a spring having ture, in presence of two Witnesses.
one end secured to the upper end of the V JOSEPH M. CHAPMAN. rocker arm and its other end secured to the Witnesses:
beam, said spring constantly tending to dis- H. L. DYE,
pose the lower end of the rocker arm at the R. E. CLARK.
