To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMEON S. JACKSON,
a subject of Great Britain, residin at Readville, Boston, in the county-of Su olk, State 5 of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and 'useful Improvement in Weft- Parter Devices for Looms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention is desi ed to be used in looms of the class operating to'efl'ect replenishment of the working weft-supply auto-. matically by ejecting the working shuttle from 'the lay and placing a fresh or reserve shuttle on the lay to continue the weaving.
Looms of the said class are shown and described in U.-S. Letters Patent No. 870,509,.
granted Nov. 5, 1907, and No. 945,722, granted Jan. 4, 1910. In such looms the mechanism thereof effects the ejection of the working shuttle by first raising the frontplate of the shuttle-box which is occupied by the said shuttle, and then pushing the shuttle forward on the lay-beam past the uplifted front-plate and from the lay-beam so that it drops down in advance of the lag into a stationary catcher-box located at the front of the loom. Patent No. 870,509 aforesaid also shows and describes the employment of feeler-mechanism operating to bring about the ejection of the working shuttle.

When the working shuttle of a 100m is expelled prior to complete exhaustion of its supply of weft or filling, the portion ofyarn that extends from the selvage of the cloth to the said shuttle, forming a continuation of the last pick of weft or filling laid among the warpthreads, hangs down between the lay and breast-beam to the said shuttle in the catcherbox. I The invention consists in novel means of supporting the said portion of yarn, and presentin it to the action .of a weft-parter located a jacent the selvage of the cloth, so as to insure that it shall be parted or severed by the action of such device.

Fig. 3 is a sectional the order of what is presented in the patents aforesaid, as follows: The vertically-movable front-plate of the shuttle-box at the magazine-side of the loom is shown at- 4, 5 being its carrying or supporting rocker, hung upon the lay, and 6 a rod connecting the said rocker with a lever 7, which last is actuated in one direction by a' cam 8 on the change-shaft 9 to swing the rocker to raise the said front-plate. At 10 is an ejector which is actuated by the rocker as the front-plate is raised, and when thus operated pushes the working shuttle forward across the top-surface of the lay-beam and off from the latter.
10 is a flexible apron, connected at its upper end to the lay-beam, and down which the ejected shuttle slides into the catcher-box 10 which is mounted upon the loom-frame in advance of the lay and below the magazine.
11-is a spring which retracts the ejector as the front-plate closes down into working position under the action of a spring 12 engaging with the rocker. By means of the spring 12 the front-plate is swun down into normal position in front of the fresh shuttle after the latter has been placed upon the lay, so as to inclose such shuttle within the shuttle-box in condition for continuation of the weaving process. At 13 is a magazine for reserve shuttles, and 14: isa transferrer by which a reserve shuttle is transferred from the mouthof the magazine to the lay. the said transferrer being pivoted at 15, and being operated by means of a cam 16 on the change-shaft, and a spring 17, the said cam serving to move the transferrer forward to its normal retracted position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the said spring serving to move the transferrer rearward, under the control of the said cam, to effect the transfer of a reserve shuttle from the magazine to the lay. At 18 is a peg orpin supported by the magazine and to which are attached the starting-ends of the loads of weft or filling which are contained in the reserve shuttles that occupy the magazine, and 19 is a wire, attached to the magazine at the rear of the latter, andconstituting a weft end holder around the inner end of which the starting-end of the weft or filling carried by the freshly transferred shuttle, and extending from the latter to the peg or pin 18, loops as the said shuttle makes its first flight from the magazine-side of the loom to the other side of the latter. The startingend a thus looped around the inner endof the weft-end holder 19 extends obliquely downward and rearward from the bend at the inner end of the said weft-end holder to the selvage of the cloth.
At 20 is a loom-temple located at the magazine-side of the loom and equipped with a weft-parter, usually termed a templecutter, which may be of any approved character and construction suitable for the purpose of cutting the starting-end a as soon as the first pick of the fresh weft is beat up by the lay. The temple-head is shown provided with a mouth or notch 20 into which the yarn to be parted or severed finds its way, and with a pivoted blade-member 20 that is actuated in one direction by engagement of the lay-beam with its heel 20 as the lay beats up, and in the other bya spring (not shown) as the lay recedes. The said blade-member operates in its movement to part or sever the yarn that has entered. into the mouth or notch.
When the front-plate 4 is raised and the shuttle is pushed forward and drops down between the front of the lay-beam and the magazine, the portion 1) 0f weft-thread or filling forming a continuation of the pick just laid among the warp threads by-the flight of the shuttle to the magazine-side of the loom, and extendin outward from the selvage at that side, Wlll draw downward away. from the temple-cutter and not be acted upon by the latter unless means is provided. for preventing it from drawing out. of the range of action of the temple-cutter.
In accordance with my invention I provide novel means of preventing the outwardly extending portion 1) of weft or filling from sinking, adjacent the selvage, too low to be acted upon by the temple-cutter or weft-parter; and also presenting the said portion to the temple-cutter or weft-parter to be cut or parted thereby. The said means may be of the character and construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2. or may be of the character and construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, a represents a rod or wire which is attached by one end thereof to a stand (Z that is fixed upon the breast-beam 2. Thereby the said rod or wire 0 is mounted in stationary position upon the loom-frame adjacent the selvage and the temple-cutter or weft-parter. It
extends rearward in the loom toward the lay. The attachment of the rod or wire to its supporting bracket may be effected conveniently in the manner shown, namely by I inserting'the forward end of the rod-or wire through a hole in the said stand and securin it therein by collars e, e, fixed upon the ro or wire at front and rear of the stand a and fittingagainst the opposite faces ofthe' latter. The rod or wire is adjustable lengthwise-in the direction from front to rear in the loom. For convenience in applying and adjusting the rod or wire, the said forward 'endof the rod or wire may be screw-threaded and the collars e, e, constituted by nuts, with said nuts screwed upon the rod or wire tightly against opposite sides of the-stand. I
The rear end of: the rod or wire drops slightly below the height of the upper surface of the lay-beam, and to accommodate such end a groove f is formed in-the top of the lay-beam. As the lay swings forward the length 10f weft 'or filling lying upon the top surface of the lay-beam and extending from the selvage to the shuttle in the adjacent shuttle-box sim 1y passes forward above the rear end of the rod or wire.
The forward portion of the rod or wire is elevated, and 1s so related to the openingor mouth of the temple cutter or weftparter that forward movement of a portion of weft or filling extending outward and over the rod or wire, and hanging down to ever, the said shuttle is ejected or expelled by being pushed forward off the lay and .drops down along the apron 10" into the 1 catcher-box l0 the said rod or wire serves to support, adjacent the selvage and templecutter or weft-parter, the portion Z) of weft or filling extending outward ,from' the selvage and down to the expelled shuttle in the catcher-box, and facilitates the entry of the said portion 6 into the mouth of the temple-cutter. As the shuttle falls forward from the lay-beamv in being ejected, and slides forward down the flexible apron 10, the said portion 6 of weft or filling is thrown forward somewhat, and also is drawn forward by reason of the forward movement of the shuttle in finding its way into the catcher-box. This action may be utilized. alone, in depositing the said portion 6 of weft or filling upon the rod or wire. After the resumption of weaving, the action of the reed carried by'the lay also will serve to carry the said 'porti n of weft or filling forward as the lay be ts u The advance of the cloth as the latter 1s taken up also will carry the said portion forward. One or another of these causes may bedepended upon, if deemed desirable, to bringabout the entrance of the portion 6 .of weft or filling into the range of action of the weftparter so that it will be parted or severed by the latter. To prevent the said portion 7) of weft or filling from shifting rearward again, a notch 0 is provided in the top side of the rod or wire 0 to receive and engage the same. The said notch is located in advance of the mouth of the temple-cutter, 2'. e., farther toward the front of the loom, so that when the yarn is in the said notch and detained thereby the yarn extends at a for-- ward inclination outward from the selvage through the notch and thereby is held in position to enter and remain within the mouth of the temple-cutter.
Figs. 1 and 2 show the employment of a piece 9, fixed upon the front of the laybeam 3 to cooperate with the rod or wire 0. The said piece 9 extendsforward from the lay-beam alongside the rod or wire. As the lay swings rearward the acting portion ofthe piece 9 rises with relation to the rod or wire and passes slightly above the latter as in Fig. 1. Should the working shuttle be pushed forward from the lay-beam while the lay is rearward, the portion 6 of weft or filling extending from the selvage to the ejected shuttle will land upon the rod or wire 0 in advance of the acting portion of said piece g, or upon the piece 9. In case the said portion of weft or filling falls upon the acting portion of the piece g, it will follow that when the'weaving mechanism is restarted on the completion of the replenishing operations the said piece 9 will carry the said portion 1) forward until the downward swinging movement of the piece 9 depresses its top surface below the rod or wire 0 and deposits the said portion 6 of weft or filling upon the forward part of the rod or wire. In being thus deposited the weft or filling usually 'will pass or be thrown so far forward that it will not be engaged by the piece 9 and carried backward in the loom by such piece as the rearward stroke of the lay causes the acting portion of said piece to rise again above the rod or wire.
The forward end of the piece 9 is shaped properly to push the weft or filling b forward as the lay advances, when the said. weft or filling rests on the rod or wire within reach of such end. When the piece 9 isemployed, the rod or wire 0 need extend rearward only far enough to lap the forward or acting end of the said piece in the most rearward position of the lay.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the rod or wire, therein marked 0 is of suflicient length rearward of the breast-beam to enable its rear portion to occupy the groove f in the lay-beam in all positions of the lay, the said rear portion being depressed so as not to interfere with the shuttle in its flight. Consequently, at whateverpointin its stroke the lay may come to rest when the weaving mechanism of the loom -is stopped for the performance of the replenishing operations, the rear portion of the rod or wire will occupy the groove in the lay-beam. The piece 9 is, or may be, omitted in case the long rod or wire 0 is employed. The rod or wire 0- or 0 is so located below the line of the starting-end a of fresh weft or filling extending from the weft-end holder 19 to the selvage of the cloth that the said starting-end does not come in contact with the rod or wire.
The two studs or fingers h, h, shown mounted upon the front of the lay-beam expelled shuttle so as to cause the said shuttle to slide down the apron 10 with its outer end foremost. The stud orfinger h is a little to one side and below the stud or finger k, in consequence of which the shuttle resting by its innerend upon the stud or finger h swings downward until it touches the stud or finger h, assuming thereby'the desired inclination, and then slides-from the said studs or fingers down the apron 10 outer end foremost, as just mentioned. In a weft-replenishing loom in which the working shuttle is expelled forwardly from a shuttle-box on the lay, the combination with a weft-parter adjacent the selvage of the cloth, of a stationary weft-or fillingsupport mounted adjacent the weft-parter' and over which the portion of Weft or filling extending from the selvage to the expelled shuttle is laid by the said shuttle. as the latter falls in front of the lay, the said stationary support supporting said ortion of weft or filling and constructed to old it forward in position to .be acted upon by the weftparter.
6. In a weft-replenishing loom in which the working shuttle is expelled forwardly from a shuttle-box on the lay, the combination with a weft-parter located ad'acent the selvage of the cloth, of a we t-support upon the weft-support.
