Description

waited Sintra @anni @Mira EDWARD JONES MALLETT, JR., AND WILLIAM S. WARD, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
Lam Patent No. ioaesa'daaa Awans, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN NURSING-BOTTLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
vTo all whom it 'may concern Be it known that we, EDWARD J onus MALLETT, J r., and WILLIAM S. WARD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nursing-Bottles; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in nursingbottles; and
It consists in a novel arrangement ofV automatic vent, in connection with the bungs or plugs, vby suspending lthe valve by a spring secured in the vent passage or at the .top of the plug, andextending through to the bottom, and holding the valve up against a flexible seat of India rubber or othei like substance, all as hereinafter more fully specified.
The drawing represents a sectional elevation of a nursing-bottle, provided with our improved automatic vent-valve.
A is the cork or plug, provided with the ordinary suction-tube B.
O is an air-vent passage, which, in this instance, we
`have hushed with a section of India Tubber, D; the
lower end of which forms a yielding and packing-seat for thevalve E, which we suspend by 4a flexible cord or other spring, F, attached either in the passage or rising up through and connecting at the top of the plug, and adjusted so that it draws the valve up against its seat with sufficient force to prevent the escape of the liquid in the bottle, but so as to yield to the pressure of the atmosphere when a vacuum is created within by the withdrawal of' the contents or any part thereof.
We propose to use any-kind of plugs, springs, valve, and valve-seats, and either to bush the vent-holes with India rubber, or to provide only the iexible seats at the bottom, or the valves may be of flexible substances. 4
It will be seen that, while this improved vent apparatus is more especially adapted for use with nursingbottles, it is also suitable for many other vessels, and we propose `to use it in all cases where it is applicable.
Having thus described our invention,
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenty A nursing-bottle having a plug, A, provided with an automatic vent-valve, constructed and arranged substantially as herein specified.
The above specification of our invention signed by us this 5th day of February, 1870.
