UNITED STATES PATENT QFFCE,
FRANK V. KNAUSS, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO.
FIREBACK FOB STOVES.
To all 'whom it may concem Be it known that I, FRANK'V. KNAUSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F irebacks for Stoves, of which the following is a specification. e
My invention relates to an improvement in stove back lining, and primarily to that type adjustable to various sizes of stoves.
The object of my invention is 'to provide a stove back lining, formed of a series of sections, adjustable relative to each other, so as to fit various sizes of cooking stoves.
Another object of my invention is to provide an adjustable stove back lining, comprising a series of plates, overlapping each other, and adapted to be frictionally united and maintained in their adjusted positions.
The features of my invention are more fully set fo-rth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a rear elevation of the plates set in position for use, to form a stove back lining. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the base plate shown to the left of Fig. 1, illustrating the same of slightly arched or curved formation. Fig. 4 is a section on line m, cc, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on line y, y, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is an end elevation of Fig. l. Fig. 7 is a rear elevation of one of the longitudinal or end adjusting plates.
S represents the main plate, which is provided with a fiange 9 eXtended along the upper edge thereof, having overhanging lips 10 at each end.
11 represents guide lugs projecting from 'the plate 8 with their sides adjacent to the fiange 9 slightly inclined.
12 represents adjustable right and left end plates each provided with a flange 13 along one edge thereof, adapted to register within the way formed by the fiange 9 and lip 10 and slide thei-ein. Each of the end plates 12 is provided with an L-eXtension 14:, one edge of which is tapered coincidently with the taper of the lug 11, with which itengages for adjustably maintaining the side plates upon the main plate. Each adjustable end plate is extended laterally beyond the main plate to any desired position for fitting the same into any width of stove capable of receiving this style of fire-back.
Specficaton of Letters Patent.

Patented Apr. 9, 1912.
Serial No. 6263632.
15, 1 5 represent vertically and longitudinally adjustable second or base plates adapted to overlap each other medially of the main plate and the respective end plates.
16 represents a fiange projecting from the plate 15 to maintain the alinement oi" said plates and form an intermediate connection against vertical displacement of said second or base plates, and guide the same in their adjustments.
17 represents a slotted guide way formed in each of said plates 15, 15 and each plate in rear of said slotted guide way is provided with a groove adapted to receive a boss 18 projecting from the end plates 12.
The boss 18 of each end plate is provided with a slot coincident with the slot 17 forrned in the second or base plates 15, 15% and through which slots a bolt 19 is projected for securing said plates in their adjusted positions.
The plates 15, 15 are preferably slightly arched, so that in their overlapping engagement between themselves they will bear against the main plate 8, and in tightening the bolts 19 between the end and second plates, the second plates will have a tendency to straighten, and thereby frictionally engage upon the main plate. Such friction or looking engagement of the main and secstove, the bolts 19 are loosened, releasing all of the elements whereby the end and second plates can be simultaneously adjusted horizontally, and the second plates vertically to such degree desired, and within a range which will permit the correlation between all the members, after which the bolts 19 are tightened, clamping all of the parts together.
Having described my invention I claim 1. In an adjustable stove back lining, a main plate provided with a slide way formed upon one side thereof, end plates oppositely disposed, each provided with an extension sliding in said way, a second plate adjustable on each of said' end plates, said second plates overlapping each other medially of and projected toward the main plate and movable With their respective end plates, and means passing through said end and second plates for securng the same together and drawing the second plates to the main plate and frictionally clamping the same thereto in any adjusted position.
2. In an adjustable stove back lining, a main plate, end plates oppositely disposed and slidably Inounted upon the main plate, a second plate for each end plate adjustable transversely upon its respective end plate and movable therewth, with one end thereof projected to engage With the main plate and frictionally clamped thereto When the end and second plates are clamped together, and clamping means for clamping said end and second plates together.
3. In an adjustable stove back lining, a main plate, end plates oppositely disposed and slidably mounted upon said main plate, a second plate for each end plate, adjustable transversely upon its respective end plate and movable thereWth, said second plates overlapping each other medially of the main plate, and each slightly arched, and clamping means for securing said end and second plates together respectvely and thereby frotionally uniting the same With the main plate.
In testmony Whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRANK V. KNAUSS.
