CHICKEN-BROODER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
Application led January 5, 1911. Serial No. 600,918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALLAon O. lVrrrmM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salem, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Chicken-Broeder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to chicken broeders, and it has for its object to provide one having a heater', curved in cross section, which permits the chickens to get their backs up against the cloth-covered heater, so that their bodies may be warmed in the natural.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for warming the heater, which will use to the best advantage the heat supplied by a lamp.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of my inn vent-ion is disclosed.
l In the drawings similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of the broeder; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the heater.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a housing member 5 is provided, having sides 6, an inclined end 7, and a rear wall S, having an opening 9. A compartment 10 is partitioned off in the housing member 5 by members 11 and 12, and in this compartment 10 there is disposed a lamp 13, which is introduced through the opening 9 in the rear wall 8. There is an opening 111 in the top or floor 15 of the housing member 5, and on this top portion or floor 15, there are guide strips 16. On the housing member 5 there is disposed an upper housing member 17, the side walls 18 of which are disposed against the outer sides of the guide strips 16. By this means the upper housing member 17 is held in position. In the upper housing member 17 there is disposed a heater 19, having a side wall 20, which is rounded outwardly in cross section. An annular depending flange 21 is secured to the heater 19, this depending flange resting against the top 15 of the lower housing member 5 which serves as a floor. There is an opening 22 in the bottom of the heater 19, and through this projects a tube 23, having a closure 24, at its upper terminal. This tube 23 projects below the bottom of the heater 19, and it is spaced from the sides of the opening 22. A depending collar 25 is secured to the bottom of the heater 19, around the opening 22, this collar 25 being spaced from the tube 23, there being an annular member 26, which connects the lower terminal of the tube with the lower terminal ol the collar 25, to form a water chamber, around the tube 23, which is in communication with the interior of the heater 19. The collar 25 projects down in the opening 1111 in the top 15, of the lower housing member 5, and the chimney 27 of the lamp 13 is disposed below the tube 23. There are a plurality of lateral openings 2S in the tube 23, above the bottom of theheater 19, hori* Zontal tlues 29 being secured to the tube 23 and having communication with the openings 23 respectively. These horizontal flues 29 are bent to form acute angles 30, the flues then extending upwardly and forming terminals 31, which project through openings 32 in the top of the heater 19. There is an additional opening 33 in the top of the heater, a collar 34 being secured to the top of the heater around the said opening In the top 35 of the upper housing member 17, there are openings 36, which are disposed substantially above the terminals 31. The heater 19 is covered with wool or cloth 37. A door 38 is hinged to the top of thc housing member 17, this door 38 being adapted to close an opening in the end of the housing member 17.
In using the invention the heater 19 is filled with water, when the lamp 13 is light ed, the heat from the lamp 13 passes up through the tube 23 against the closure 24. It will be seen that as the tube 23, with its head 2l. has a considerable surface exposed to the vater in the heater 19, the heat from the lamp 26 will loe used to the best advantage. The heated air from the tube 23 passes through the flues 29, in which it tends to heat the said lues, serving to raise the temperature of the water in the heater 19. As the warm air from the terminals 31 passes through the openings 36, it will tend to draw with it air from the housing chamber 17, which will insure a circulation of air.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a chicken broeder a heater having a side wall Curved in cross section downward and inward, a flange depending from the heater, spaced from t-he periphery of the heater, the iiange permitting the Chickens to get their backs up against the side wall of the heater, while preventing the chickens from walking under the heater in such a manner as to heat their heads.
2. In a chicken broeder a housing, a heater disposed in the housing and having a top with openings and a side wall converging downwardly, a supporting flange depending from the heater, spaced from the vertical plane of the periphery of the heater, the flange permitting the Chickens to get their backs up against the side wall of the heater while preventing the Chickens from walking under the heater and thereby heating their heads, a depending annular-water chamber disposedwvithin the flange and in communication with the heater, the inner wall of said water chamber extending upwardly into the heater and having' openings in the upper port-ion thereof and a Closure for its top, said water chamber depending below the horizontal plane at the bottom of the flange, and being adapted to be disposed in the housing to prevent the lateral disn placement of the heater, and iues in the heater connected with the openings in the inner wall of the water chamber, the flues extending through the openings in the top of the heater.
3. In a chicken broeder a housing, a heater disposed in the housing and having a top with openings and a side wall, a supporting fiange depending from the heater, a depending annular chamber disposed within tending through the openings in the top ot' o the heater.
in testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
