{lb all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT W. THORN- nnrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county ofSufi'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Jet-Heads for Drinking-Fountains, of which the fol? been subject to the objections which have been overcome in the jet head embodying my invention:
In my device the orifice from which the jet of water issues is so located that it cannot be sucked, nor .in fact touched by the inside of the lips of the user; neither can a child put its finger over the orifice in such a manner as-to spray the water. Thesefeatures. are very important as these fountains are inv tended particularly for use in schoolhouses.
My improved jet head is also constructed so that, if desired, it may be combined with a filter.
The invention willbe fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features are pointed out and clearly defined in the claims at the close of the specification.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a top plan view of the founta n embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings,- at A is shown the lower half of a jet head for a drinking fountain. This part is screwthreaded, as shown at B, forattachment to, the pipe, and at C for attachment to the upper half D of the jet head.
The lower half, A, of the body is of a shape and size adapted to contain, if desired, a suitable amount of some filtering-substance E, such as charcoal or quartz in granular form. The filtering material E is supported upon a lower screen F and covered by an upper screen G which holds the material in -the water to be the proper l()(ll1l'l0l'l. A suitable washer H is inserted between the upper screen G and the upper half D of the jet head so that the screen is held in place by the lower edge of the upper half I).
An orifice I of suitable size passes through the upper part of the jet head D and allows projected upwardly in the form of a low jet. Around the outside of this orifice and above the top of. the jet head D, I place a series of radially projecting arms K, K, shown in the accompanying drawings as three in number. -Thcse arms K project upwardly c. in a direction parallel with the jet of water for a short distance and then extend outwardly away from the orifice. The arms K are independent of each other and donot touch at their inner ends, there being a space between each ad jacent pair of arms,'but the inner ends of the arms are so close together thata child cannot place his finger over the orifice, while at the same time the water is unobstructed and free to flow upwardly through the orifice. It will be seen that the level of the top of the arms is above the orifice so that a finger cannot close the orifice. If an attempt is made to do so, the water will escape, through the spaces between the arms, but will not be sprayed as the spaces have an area greater than that of the orifice. I
While the user may possibly touch the outside of his lips against the edge of these arms, it is impossible .to touch the inside-of the lips which is the portion which, if touched, is likely to result in infection. It is also impossible to'suck the nozzle, as is frequently done by children where no means for protecting the jet head are employed.
In the interior of the jet head is located a transverse abutment M which lies somewhat below the point where the orifice opens into the interior of the jet head, and serves to prevent any pointed object such as a pencil being stuck into the orifice and broken off therein.
It is obvious that my.improved jet head consisting of the radial, arms bearing the proper relation to the orifice through which the jet issues may be employed in a large variety of forms, and I desire to claim the same broadly, and without restriction to any particular type -or form of body. lVhat I' claim as my invention 1. The improved jet head for drinking fountains comprising a body having an orifice therein for the emission of a jet, and a plurality of radially extending arms about the said orifice, said arms having a surface next the jet extending away from the orifice and substantially parallel with the jet.
2. The improved jet head for drinking fountains, comprising'a body having an orifice therein for the emission of a jet, and a plurality of radially extending arins about the said orifice, said arms having a surface next the jet extending away from the orifice and substantially parallel with the jet, there being an unpbstructed space between the inner ends of each pair of adjacent arms.
3. The improved jet head for drinking fountains, comprising a body having an orifice therein for the emission of a jet, and a plurality of radially extending arms about the said orifice, said arms having a surface next the jet extending away from the orifice and substantially parallel with the jet, there being an unobstructed space between the inner ends of each pair of adjacent arms, said fountains comprising a body having an ori fice therethr'ough, radially extending arms about the said orifice and a transverse abutment Within the said body and belowthe inner opening of the said orifice.
5. The improved jet head for drinking fountains comprising a body having an orifice therein for the emission of a jet and a plurality of L-shaped arms about and closely adjacent to said orifice, and having their upper portions extending outwardly therefrom.
