Be it known thatv I, EDWIN N. CHANDLER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and Starte of Massachusetts, Ahave invented an Improvement in Electrically-Heated Branding-Heads, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters o n the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to branding heads .adapted to be secured to a press plunger `form of an embedded resistance element disposed adjacentl the die.
While the improved branding head is applicable to other and general uses, it has been especially designed for use in a press for stamping `impressions on leather goods, as bootand shoe parts.
For an understanding of the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 shows an end elevation of the branding head; Fig. 2 is a central vert-ical section on line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view in section showing a modified detail.
The head is composed of heavy plates 1 and 2, shown as square but which may be of any form desired, clamped together by screws or bolts 3. The upper plate 1 has a bossa projecting upward, and a socket 5 extending through the `plateladjacent one side thereof and this boss, to receive a suitable operating plunger 6, which may be clamped therein as by a usual clamping screw 7. The lower plate 2 has its top dished out to receive a resistance coil 8 embedded in cement or enamel, this typifying any suitable form of'electric heating device. An upstanding projection 9, centrally beneath the plunger 6, receives the thrust thereof to prevent injury to the surrounding enamel layer. The operative face of the plate 2 has an undercut channel 10,l
which may be of circular'or other cross section, extending from the opposlte side centrally beneath the -plunger 6 nearly to thev edge of the plate beneath the plunger, such edge being formed with a projecting transverse ledge 11 formed as a straight edge.
This ledge as shown yprojects from the face f2 somewhat less than the thickness of the usual impression die shown at 12, such die typifying any one of a wide variety, of widths, lengths, and forms adapted to be clamped on the face of the plate 2 between the ledge 11 and a projection 13 on a follower 14. The follower 14 is slidably held in the undercut channel 10 and is adapted to be forced forward for such clamping action by a screw bolt 15 threaded through a bearing piece 16 fastened as by screws 17 to the plate 2, such bolt having a spurred end 18 to receive an operator.
The die-engaging portions of the ledge 11 and. the opposed projection 13 may extend out with parallel sides, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or they may be undercut as shown at 19, 20 in Fig. 3, to effect dove-tail enagelment with a correspondingly formed One of the plates, shown as the plate 2, may be provided with an upstanding plate lug 21 adjacent the resistance coil terminal opening 22 to protect the wire connections from injury.
It is apparent that various minor changes in detaillrnay be made within the scope 'of the invention in itsbroader aspects, for example, the backing ledge 11 instead of being a continuous ledge may consist of upstanding lugs equally spaced on either side of the central line of the channel 10.
By this construction a simple, compact branding head is formed, enabling dies of various widths and other dimensions to beV clamped to lie againstthe face of the head substantially centrally beneath the operating plunger and in close proximity to the heating element, whereby the impression. is evenly and accurately produced, with an economical expenditure of electric energy for the necessary heating.
The plates 1 and 2 are made of consider- .able thickness, so as to afford a substantial mass of heat-storing metal, and the resistance element being disposed centrally therein and extending over nearly the entire transverse area thereof, delivers its heat uniformly thereto so that a maximum portion of such heat is conserved and transmitted to the die clamped on the outer face. Further, the resistance element and its bed of enamel are absolutely protected from external injury, while the strut or projection claim as new and desire to 9 insures against crushing or mutilation thereof by the operative thrusts of the plunger; at the same time the resistance element can be instantly uncovered, should .this be necessary, for 'repair or inspection thereof by merely removing the fastenings 3.
