I-IENRY W. PHELPS, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK, ASSIG'NOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW vJERSEY.
CAN-NOZZLE SEAL.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY W. PHnLPs, a citizen of the Unitedv States, residing in Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Can-Nozzle Seals, of which the following is a specication.
This invent-ion relates to seals for canvnozzles of that kind wherein the seal consists of a strip of sheet met-al, perforated to pass over the shouldered screw capof the can nozzle above the said shoulder, Aand to be soldered to the can and broken at a weakened or tearing line. And the invention consists in such a perforated sealing strip provided with a weakened tearing line, and it further consists in providing such a sealing strip with two weakened tearing lines, so that it may be soldered at two points, one at. each side of the can nozzle.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a can and its nozzle, provided with one of the improved seals. Fig. 2 is a section, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the sealing strip itself before the same is applied to the nozzle and can. o
In said drawing, A represents the can body, B is the can nozzle, C is the screw cap which'screws down upon the nozzle to close the same and D is the shoulder or collar at the lower edge ofthe screw cap. The seal strip consists of a strip E of sheet metal, perforated at F with a hole large enough to pass` over the screw cap C, but not large enough to permit the passage through it of the shoulder D of said cap.
G is a weakened line on the strip E, the same, in the instance illustrated, consisting of a rowof perforations.
I-I is a second weakened line,'consisting of a row of similar perforations.
To seal the can, the cap C is screwed down upon the nozzle, thus closing the can, and the perforation F of the strip E placed over the cap, and thesmall tag end of the sealing strip is bent down over the corner of the can and soldered to the can at K. And the strip is preferably also soldered to the can at the point L on the other side of the nozzle. The
advantage of soldering the seal thus at two` 'sides of the nozzle.
I claim l. The seal for can nozzles, consisting of a strip of sheet metal perforated to pass over the screw cap down to the flange thereof, having the tail to be bent over the corner and soldered to the side of the can, and having a weakened line for severing from the can, substantially as specified. y
2. The seal for can nozzles, consisting of a strip of sheet metal perforated to pass over the screw cap down to the flange thereof, having the tail to be bent over the corner and soldered to the side of the can, and having weakened lines for severing from the can, at each side of kthe` nozzle, substantially as specified. g
