Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUMAN A. MQGEARY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glothes-Driers, of'which the fol.- lowing is a specification.

This invention relates to laundry apparatus and particularly to the class thereunder known as clothes driers.

An object of this invention is to provide a clothes drier having novel means for mounting it with relation to a fixed structure and the provision of novel means for operating the said drier for moving it to different positions of adjustment near to the support or at a position remote therefrom, within the scope of the operating mechanism.

A further object of this invention is to provide a clothes drier adapted particularly for use in connection with a building having windows in which the drier may be moved near to the window for the purpose of permitting the application of material or clothing to be dried to the rack thereof.

and then providing for the movement of the rack away from the side of the building where the clothes may be hung freely and subjected to the drying action of the atmosphere.

A still further object of this invent-ion is to provide novel means for operating the reel supporting member and for holding the same in different positions of adjustment at points near to or remote from the building.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of a drying apparatus embodying the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 illustrates an enlarged detail sectional view of a bearing for the crane and a fragment of the crane applied thereto, the

same being on the line AB of Fig. 1;

guide bar and the lever and means for holding the lever in adjusted position on the guide bar.

In these drawings 10 denotes a fragment of a support which may be the wall of a building to which the brackets 11 are anchored, the said brackets forming bearings for the vertically disposed portion 12 of the crane 13. The lower end of the vertically disposed portion 12 has a sleeve 12 recessed to form a socket 14 in which the anti friction ball 15 rests, the said anti-friction ball being supported on a bearing 16 of the bracket 17. The crane 13 is provided with a brace rod 18 anchored to the support 10 and having its outer end connected to a lug 19 of the collar 20, which collar 20 receives the crane.

The vertically disposed portion 12 has an arm 21 mounted on it and the-outer end of the arm has an aperture 22 for the reception of the stud 23, the said stud 23 being carried by the lever 24 which has a handle 25. The end of' the lever 24 remote from the stud 23 has an aperture 26 to receive the bolt 27 by which the lever is connected to the guide bar 28. a

The guide bar 28 is shown as comprising a bracket-like structure having two supporting flanges 29, whereas the intermediate portion of the said bracket is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 30 in which a lug 31 of the block 32 is slidable, the said block having an aperture 33 for the reception of the bolt 27. The guide bar 28 is further provided with a series of recesses 34 in its under surfaces which form seats for the block 32, so that when the bolt is rotated to draw the block into the recesses, the said block may be held at different positions of adjustment, whereas when said bolt is turned to permit a dislodgment of the block from the recesses, the said block is free to slide longitudinally of the guide bar, thus permitting the lever to move from one end to the other thereof. The movement of the lever results in oscillating the arm 21, and in rotating the vertically disposed portion 12 of the crane and such rotation, results in changing the position of the crane with relation to the support.

The rack for supporting the clot-hes is formed by a series of ribs which have their ends pivoted to lugs 36 of a collar 37, which collar is secured on a depending end of the crane. The ribs are supported by braces 38 which are connected to the ribs by the pins 39 and the ribs are connected to the lugs 40 of the collar 41 which is also secured to the depending end of the crane.

The ribs 35 are connected by stringers 42 which may be in the form of rods or strands of wire or clothes line, the particular material of which these stringers are formed being immaterial, but the said stringers extend through the apertures in the ribs as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The

37 and 40 are preferably rotatable on the depending end of the crane, but the manner of securing the said collar to the frame is immaterial.

In operating the clothes hanger, a movement of the lever from the full line position shown in Fig. 2, to the dotted line shown in said figure, will result in swinging the crane from the full line position shown in Fig. 2, to the dotted line position E shown in said figure, and it is obvious from an inspection of said Fig. 2 that by having the block seated in other recesses of the guide bar that the said crane can be held in different positions with relation to the support, the angles at which said crane will stand when said lever is adjusted being shown by the dotted lines F, G and H.

I claim:

1. In a clothes drier, a guide bar having a slot therein and recesses, a block slidable along the guide bar, means for holding the block in the recesses in the guide bar, alever connected to the block, a crane, a reel on the crane, and means for connecting the crane to the lever to take motion therefrom.

2. In a clothes drier, a lever, a crane to which the lever is connected, a guide bar having a slot therein, a block having a lug slidable in the guide slot, means connecting the lever to the block and for holding the block in engagement with the guide bar, a reel on the crane, and a brace for supporting the crane near its outer end.

3. In a clothes drier, a crane having a vertically disposed portion, and a horizontal portion, brackets supporting said clothes drier, a guide bar having a longitudinal slot, a horizontal arm, a collar provided on one end of said arm adapted to embrace the said vertically disposed portion of the crane, a horizontally adjustable lever having one of its ends pivotally connected to one end of the said arm, and having its opposite end slidable in the longitudinally disposed slot, means for holding the said lever in its adjusted positions, and a handle on said lever for operating said crane.
