A. SEGMAN.
JEWELRY.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 23, 1911.

ALEXANDER SEGMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
JEWELRY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 19125.
Application filed September 23, 1911. Serial No. 650,902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER SEGMAN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to jewelry, and par ticularly to lavallieres.
In buying articles of this class of jewelry to which my invention relates, there is often much indecision on the part of the purchaser due to the fact that with gowns of difierent styles, it is desirable to wear lavallieres of different relative proportions, some gowns being so cut that it is desirable to have a relatively broad and short lavalliere while other gowns are so made that it is desirable to wear with them a relatively narrow and long lavalliere. In order to satisfy the requirements to all these conditions, it is necessary, obviously, to possess a number of such lavallieres. I
Now the object of my present invention is to overcome the hereinbefore named difficulty and the necessity of owning numerous lavallieres, by providing a lavalliere in which there is a body member or frame and a plurality of pendants or drops, the positions of which latter partsv are adjustably changeable relatively to each other and to the body member, so that in one and the same article by adjusting the parts, the effect of a long and narrow lavalliere or of a short and broad lavalliere may be produced, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a lavalliere comprising my. invention. Fig. 2 is a partial elevation of the same, showing the parts in a different position, and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the parts in a still different position. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a lavalliere showing the partsin still another position.
Fig. 5 is a partial elevation showing a modified form of the invention. Fig. 6 is a plan of a portion of the frame 'and'supporting wire. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of. a pendant showing its support in section. Fig. 8
is a partial elevation taken from the rear side of the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 9 is an enlarged rear elevation showing the manner in which the pendants are connected in the position shown in Fig. 5, and Fig. 10 is a'partial elevation showing the pendants arranged in still another posi Referring particularly 'to the drawing, the lavalliere made in accordance with my invention may comprise a body or frame member 10' which is preferably made of metal in the design illustrated or in any other design, inasmuch as the shape and configuration of the body member of the lavalliere forms no part of my invention.
In the upper side of the body member 10, the same may be provided with a loop 11, or other device by which the ornament is suspended from the chain about the wearers neck. As will be understood, the body member 10 may be provided with any number of settings 12, and in any desired position to receive jewels which are secured in these settings. In connection with this body member 10 I also provide a plurality of pendants or drops indicated at 13, 14 and 15, three of these pendants or drops being illustrated, but as will be understood, I do not limit my invention to the employment of this number. I
Now referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I may secure to the body member 10 preferably cent-rally on the bottom side thereof and depending therefrom, a loop 16. The pendant 14 on the reverse side thereof is provided with a series of hooks 17 within a frame 18, the said frame 18 being linked with the loop 16; The pendant 14 is supported in the loop 16 by passing any one of the hooks 17 over the bottom portion of the loop 16, and as will be understood, the position of the pendant 14 relatively to the frame 10 will depend upon which hook 17 supports the pendant 14. Obviously when suspended from the top hook the pendant 14 will appear as shown in Fig. 1, whereas if suspended from the bottom hook, the pendant 14 will be approximately at the same'relative longitudinal height as are the pendants 13 and 15, asshown in Fig. 4.
At the rear of the body member 10, ex tending from the ends thereof to a point approximately to the center, there are wire frame members 19 and 20, preferably conforming in outline to the contour of the bottom of the body member 10, and these wire or loop 21 is secured, through which the wire 19 passes, and similarly at the upper end of the pendant 15 there is a loop or ring 22 through which the wire 20 passes. Now as will be understood, the rings 21, 22, may be placed respectively in the corrugations 23, 2-1, at the outer extremities of the Wires 19, 20, or may be placed in any of the corrugations 25, as shown in Fig. 7, also that the pendants 13 and 15 are placed in the outer extremities of the body member 10, as shown in Fig. 1, to produce a relatively broad effect of the lavalliere, or these pendants 13 and 15 may be placed in the inner extremities of the wires 19 and 20, as shown in Fig. 3, to produce a relatively narrow effect in the lavalliere, or as shown in Fig. 2, these pendants 13 and 15 may be placed in an intermediate position.
Referring to Figs. 5, 8 and 9, it will also be seen that I may provide the upper extremities of the pendants or drops with a ring 26 which is secured thereto in any suitable manner and linked with the ring 27, to which latter a screw-threaded shank 28 is secured. In this instance at the rear of the frame in suitable positions, tubular members 29 are secured, which as will be understood, are screw threaded to receive the shank 28. This latter construction applies to all of the pendants, if so desired.
As shown particularly in Figs. 5 and 9, the bottom members 30 and 31 of the pendants 13 and 15 may also be provided with interiorly threaded tubular members 32 and 33, and the screw-threaded shank 3 1 of the pendant 14 passes through both these tubular members 32, 33, in order to effect the design as shown in Fig. 5.
It will also be understood that numerous arrangements of connecting the pendants to positions other than those shown, may be made, without departing from the nature and spirit of my invention, as for instance by reference to Fig. 10, it will be seen that the pendant 14, provided with a screw and eye 34: structure, may be secured centrally to the body 10 of the pendant by inserting in the tube 36, and furthermore that the lower portions from the pendants 13 and 15 may be provided with hooks 37 adapted to engage the eyes 38 at the rear of the bottom of the pendant 141, so that the pendants may be connected, as indicated in this figure.
It will also be understood, that in carrying out my invention, I may construct a body member of two or more parts, and connect these parts of the body member together, so that they will be adjustable to different positions.
While I have shown, and particularly described my invention in jewelry in its application to a lavalliere, it is obvious that the said features of improvement are applicable to other and substantially equivalent forms of jewelry, such as brooches and other pins, ear-rings and pendants, without departing from the spirit and nature of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A lavalliere, comprising a body member, a plurality of pendants or drops, and means whereby the position of each of the pendants is adjustable relatively to the other pendants and the body member to vary both the length and width of the lavalliere.
2. A lavalliere, comprising a body member, a plurality of pendants, and means whereby the position of each of the pendants is adjustable relatively to the other pendants and the body member.
3. A lavalliere, comprising a body member of any suitable design, a plurality of pendants of any desired design, and means whereby the position of each of the pendants is adjustable relatively to the other pendants and the body member to vary the width of the lavalliere, and certain other of the pendants are adjustable to position to vary the length thereof.
4. A lavalliere, comprising a body member of any suitable design, a central pendant, means whereby said pendant is connected to the body member and the position thereof is adjustable to vary the length of the lavalliere, other pendants on either side of the said central pendant, and means whereby the said other pendants are positively connected to the body member and the positions thereof are adjustable on the body portion to vary the width of the lavalliere.
