Be it known that I, ROBERT C. Soi-IEMMEL, citizen of` the United States, residing at Union City, in the county ofRandolph andv easily produced at small cost and in such manner that it has when placed the superior appearance of a hand-sewed valance, and

`also adapted to be expeditiously tackedV to the bow of a top without lmarring or otherwise affecting the valance face or the raising when the latter is employed in the valance.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying illustration of two specific embodiments thereof, while its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claim. In the drawings which are hereby made a part hereof: Figure l is a perspective view showing a portion of a valance constructed in accordance with my invention, as properly applied to the front bow of a top. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of the valance per se. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. l, and showing the manner in which the foundation piece of the valance is tacked to the bow. Fig. 4C is a fragmentary elevation of a valance constructed in accordance with my invention and embodying a raising. Fig. 5 is a sec-v tion of the same taken in the plane of the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.

Referring by letter to the said drawings, and more -particularly to Figs. 1-3 thereof: A is the front bow of a carriage top. B is a covering, of oil-cloth, leather or other suitable material, comprised in the top, butis not made a part of my invention, and C is the foundation piece of my novel valance, which foundation piece is preferably made of leather, buckram, canvas or pasteboard in suitable width, though it may be made of any other appropriate material without affecting my invention. In addition to the said foundation piece C, the valance comprises a covering strip D, made of leather, mohair, rubber, enamel goods or any suitable material desired, and a illingpiece E .which lmay be made of leather, buckram, pasteboard, or any other suitable material desired. It will also be noted here that the filling-piece E extends beyond the upper or outer edge of the foundation piece C, and that the stitches G are located above or outwardly beyond the foundation piece C, as will readily be understood by compari` son of Figs. l and 3.

, In applying the valance produced as dey scribed, the foundation piece C is tacked to the face of the top bow A, as indicated by H, while the fillingl piece E is held away from the foundation piece C, and then the upwardly extending portion of the covering strip D is carried rearward `over the bow A and is connected, together with the covering B, to the bow in the conventional manner illust-rated or in any other manner consonant with the purpose 'of my invention.

In the modified embodiment ofV my invention, Figs. 4 and 5, the raising M, preferably a comparatively narrowpiece of pasteboard, is interposed and secured by adhesive between the lower portion of the filling piece E and the inner side of the upwardly extending portion of the covering strip D. The said raising M serves, as its name implies, to give the valance a raised and ornamental appearance at a point between the two lines of stitches F and G, but the raising may be omitted without in any way affecting my invention.

As will be gathered from the foregoing the covering strip D, thefoundation piece C andthe filling piece E may be readily assembled, and the stitches F and G may be made on a sewing machine, from which it follows that the valance may be expedi tiously and cheaplyfproduced, and this notwithstanding the fact that it is a durable structure and has when applied the superior finish and general appearance of a handsewed valance, or otherwise stitched valance after being placed on the top. The facility with which the stitches F and Gr may be made on a sewing machine is due to the factthat the stitches F are located entirely below the illing piece E, while the stitches Gr are located entirely above the foundation piece C. The portion of the covering strip D between the lower edge of the filling piece E and the stitches F permits of the filling piece E and the portion of the strip D there over being bent at right angles to the foundation piece C, so that the stitches G can be conveniently produced on a sewing machine after the formation of the stitches F. It will also be noticed that the extension of the filling piece E upward or outward beyond the foundation piece C, and also upward or out vard beyond the upper or outer side of the bow A gives an additional finish to the valance and enhances the general workmanlike appearance of the saine. It will also be gathered from the foregoing that the foundation piece. C of the valance is tacked to the bow A in such manner that the face of the valance is not injured, marred or otherwise affected, and the raising M when employed is not displaced.

The covering strip D is flexible and hence can be readily bent to a position at rightanglcs to the foundation piece C, and in said position can be conveniently stitched on a sewing machine to the upper portion of the filling piece E and this without interference from the said foundation piece C. It will also be observed that the iiexible covering stri p D is adapted to be moved together with the filling piece E away from the foundation piece C, while the latter is being tacked to the bow A, and then when the filling piece E is positioned for use, its inner side is opposed to and covers the heads of the tacks II, with the result that there is absolutely no liability of the covering strip being distended or pressed outward by the said heads of the tacks.

Thilo I have shown and described certain forms of my invention, it is to be understood that I am not limited to the details or the form or relative arrangement of parts disclosed, but that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

The herein described valance comprising a foundation piece adapted to be disposed against the face of a carriage top bow and also adapted to be tacked to said bow, a covering strip of flexible material stitched to the inner portion of the foundation piece and extending outward from said point of connection and resting in front of the foundation piece, a lling piece arranged at the in er side of the said outwardly extending portion of the covering strip and extending outward beyond the foundation piece and arranged with its inner side fiat against the outer side of the foundation piece and also arranged entirely outward beyond said connection, and stitches connecting the outer portion of the said filling piece and the covering strip ata point outward beyond and separated from the outer edge of the foundation piece.
