l .Tosnr'nf` 1ro-BER., orfnmra, Iowa.
To all lwko'nl it may concern L' Beit known that I,"JosEPi HUBER, citizen of the United States, residing at Elma, in the county of Howardand State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to fence posts and has for its object the provision of a metallic post of sim le and durable construction,
Which will ectually withstand both lon0i.
tudinal. 'and lateralstrains incident to t e stretcnin of `line'wires.
' A furtlier object is to provide a fence post having spaced seating recesses formed therein for the reception of the 4line wires, said line wires being held against accidental displacement by a removable locking rod interr secting the wire receiving recesses.
. A further objectwis to 'providethe post` with a cap adapted to bear against the adjacent end of the locking rod and ret-ain the latter to its seat.
yA 'further .object is ,to `reinforce and strengthen the post by the 'provision of a metal plate 'extending the entire hei h t of and registering with the'wire. receivin reoesses, thereby to permit the passageo the locking rod. f
A- still further .object of the invention is generally to improve this class yof, devices, so as to increase their utility, durability and eiiciency. e t
Further objects and advantages will appear in the'following description, it being understood that various changes in form,
proportions and minor details of construc-` tionmay be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention andl the-merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, 1n which:
Figure 1 is a erspective View of a metallic post constructed) in accordance with' my invention; Fig.V 2 is a longitudinal sectional view ofthe same; Fig. 3 is a `perspective view of the `casing sectlons, one of said sections being broken away; Fig. f1 is alperspective view of a portion of the reinforcing plate; Fig. 5' is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional viewtaken on the line e-e of Fig. 2.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented D131'. 26,
HMETALLIC FENCE-POST,
Application lied April 1, 1910. Serial No. 552,909. g'
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The fence j post comprises a hollow body pressed or bent laterally to produce oppositely disposed reinforcing ribs 8 preferably arranged at right angles to the vertical plane of the post and gradually increasing in,
thickness from a point adjacent the. top of the casing to the lower` end thereof, assh'own.
One longitudinal edge of the body portion or. casing is 'formed with 'a plurality of spaced seating recesses `9 adapted to receive the line wires 10, thus to maintain said' line wires in proper spaced relation.4 Disposed within the hollow body portion, is a rein forcing plate 11 prefer ly extending the entire height of the post and secured inposition by the bolts or fastening devices 7. One longitudinal edge of the reinforcing plate 11 is cut-away to produce spaced recesses 12 which register with the seating recesss 9 so as, to accommodate the line wires, the metal between'the recesses 12 being concave transversely to form a seat 13 for the reception of a locking rod 14. The locking rod 14 is preferably formed from a single length of wire having one end -thereof bent to produce a downwardly extending hook-15 adapted to enter a seating recess 16 formed in the upper edge of the body portion or casing, thus to prevent rotation of the locking rod in .its seat. The locking rod\14 intel-sects the wire receiving recesses 9 and is disposed in advance of the line wires' 10 so as to retain the line Wires in position on the post.
The upper end of the reinforcing plate is V 'portion or casin preferably. formed in two house the hook 15 when the cap is in position on the post, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The fence post is provided with a concrete base 22 adapted to be embedded in the ground, the cement or other plastic material constituting the base 22 being reinforced and strengthened by a spirally disposed wire 23 wrapped around the base of the post and bearing against the reinforcing ribs 8 and against the adjacent longitudinal edges of said post, as shown. l
In operation, the cap 18 is removed and the line wires seated in the recesses 9, after which the locking rod 14 is placed in position with its hooked end 15 engagin the seating recess 16, thus locking the line ire's 10 against accidental displacement. The cap 18 is then positioned over the upper end of the fence post with the recess 21 in position' to receive the hook 15 of the locking rod, said cap being retained in position on the post by inserting the cotter pin or fastening device 2O through the registering openings inthe extension 17 and cap 18, as before stated.
The cap 18 is preferably provided with a knob or finger piece 24 to facilitate plac-` ing the cap on or removing said cap from the post.
It will here be noted that the fastening def vices 7 serve the dual function of retaining the overlapped ends of the casing sections in assembled position and also serve to :fas-l ten the reinforcing plate to said casing.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A post comprising a hollow metallic body portion having exterior angularly disposed ribs gradually 'increasing in width from the top to the bottom of the post, and a flat reinforcing plate disposed at .right angles to the ribs and housed within the body of the post, the upper end of the reinforcing plate being reduced and projected vertically above the top of the post to form a support for a cap.'
2. A post comprising a hollow metallic body portion, a reinforcing plate housed within the body portion and having its upper end reduced and projected vertically,
above the top of the post, a cap having a socket therein for the reception of the reduced en`d of the reinforcing plate, there being registering transverse openings formed in thecap and reduced end of the plate, and a 'fastening device extending through said openings or securing the cap in position on the post. x
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. l
