Be it known that I, NATHAN J WHITAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at.

Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Collar, of which the follow'-l ing is a specification. t

This invention relates to` a turn-down collar and has for 4its principal object vto provide improvements whereby the scarf or necktie can be readily adjusted without the buttonat the rear of the collar interfering with the lfree movement of the tie.

A further object ofthe invention is the provision of a tab or tongue formed in the middle of the collar at the rear for receiv- -ing the collar button for att-aching the collar toA the collar band of the shirt, while at the same time maintaining the proper set of the lcollar and permitting the neckt-ie to slide freely around in the collar.

With these objects in view and others, as will appear-as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which Will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity inthe claims appended hereto.

This tab 5 has a button ole 6 for receiving the rear button of theishirt, vand the under portion 7 of the outer section a under the tab 5 bears against the head of the button 8, as shown in Fig. 4. Alfter the two sections of the collar are assembled, they are stitched around the edges, as shown at 9, Fig., 1, and vthe two sections -are also stitched around thexslot 4 so as to strengthen the collar at the tongue. With a collar constructed in this manner, the button tongue or tab 5 forms an integral part of one of the inner sections .of the collar and the collarcan' be readily ,applied to the shirt because of the flexibility of the tongue, and

at the same time, the button is prevented from binding on the scarf or necktie, as is commonly the case, sothat with the present arrangement, the scarf or necktie can be adjusted with ease. It will be understood that any number of sections may be used, according to the number of plies desired.

In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 5,-th tab 5 is separate from and stitched 'to the inner section b of the collar, and projects through the slot 4"of the outer section.

From the foregoing, it is thought that the' construction, operation and many advan tages of lthe herein described invention will be apparent to'those skilled in the art without further description, and it will be understcodthat various changes in the size, shape,

proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus describ dthe invention, what --I claim as new,and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is j 1. A collar composed 'of inner 'andz outer sections constitutin plies, the outerlsection having a slot in its and port-ion at'the center below the upper edge, the inner section having anintegral tongue extending out@4 wardly throu h theslot and de ending therefrom,-sai tongue being backe up by the adjacent portion ofthe outer section and terminating short. of the bottom edge of the loo collar, and having a buttonhole for attachingthe collar to a', shirt.

2. A turndown 'collar vformed of )a pluralityof sections constituting plies, each section being 'of the same contour and having a band portion and an integrally oonneoted turned down portion, said sections being placed one upon the other and stitched together around all theedges, the outer seotion having a slot in its band portion at the center below the top edge, and a tongue pro- 'vided withy abutton hole'for attaching the collar to a shirt, said tongue being provided on an inner section and passed through-said slot and de ending thererom but terminat- 10 ing short oi) the bottom edge of the collar.
