UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL G. GEBAUER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CAR-SEAL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL G. GEBAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Seals, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to car seals, and more particularly to that type of car seal described and claimed in my Patent #952,801, granted March 22, 1910, my object being to improve my patented ear seal with respect to simplicity and effectiveness in the prevent-ion of tampering without detection.
With this in mind my invention resides in the features of construction and arrangement, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of one side of the shackle removed. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking at the opposite side of the shackle. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the complete seal closed and locked. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section through the cap and the locked ends of the shackle, taken on the line fir-4: of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail cross-section, taken on line 55 of Fig. 4.
Referring now to these figures, the shackle 1, which is preferably formed of a strip of sheet metal, is provided with an aperture 2 at one end, and is slitted adjacent to its opposite end to form a tongue 3, which is struck outwardly therefrom for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Immediately beyond the tongue 3,the shackle 1 has a reduced neck portion 4, and terminates beyond said neck 4 in a rounded head 5 havthe side recesses 6. The said reduced neck portion 4 is formed, as shown, by turning up the side edges of the shackle at this point, these side edges being cut away to form projections 7, constituting catches. The last mentioned end of the shackle is inclosed by a thimble or cap 8, the open and closed ends of which are pressed fiat, and the intermediate portion of which remains rounded about the catches 7. The closed end of this cap 8 also has portions 9 pressed inwardly within the side recesses 6 of the shackle head 5 in order to securely lock said shackle in said cap and prevent it from being thereafter withdrawn.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 17, 1911.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
Serial No. 621,611.
The inner end of the thimble or cap 8 extends to the tongue 3, as particularly shown in Fig. 4-, which tongue is bent to lap over one side edge of said thimble, and thus prevent the projection of the opposite free end of the shackle into the cap except upon that side from which the catches 7 extend. \Vhen it is desired to lock the shackle this free end is projected within the cap 8 until its aperture 2 extends over the catches 7 in looking engagement. Thus the locking engagement of the shackle ends is concealed by the cap 8 from manipulation with a view to releasing the same. The formation of the tongue 3 weakens the shackle at this point to such an extent that any continued tampering will result in its being broken at a point where it will be impossible to conceal the break, while the tongue itself prevents the free end of the shackle from being forced into the cap 8 upon the wrong side of the connected end, where it might be held in such a manner as to deceive the ordinary observer and still remain unlocked and permit of ready subsequent releasing of the seal.
It will be understood that the shackle is to have stamped or otherwise placed thereon, an identifying number and the name of the road using the seal in order to prevent substitution,
I claim:
A seal lock comprising a strip one end of which has a recess, and its other end having a head provided with recesses on opposite sides, and a neck joining said head to the strip, said neck being formed by bending the edges of the strip outwardly, said bent up edges being shaped to form catches which are adapted to enter the first-mentioned recess, and a cap inclosing the neck and head of the strip, said cap having indentations which enter the recesses of the head, and the strip having a tongue which fits over the edge of the cap .at one side of the mouth thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EMIL G. GEBAUER.
