ROBERT J. RENNIE, OF MOOERS FORKS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM F. KENNEDY, 0F CHAMPLAIN, NEW YORK.
CAR-DOOR FASTENER.
Application filed February 20, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT J. RENNIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mooers Forks, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Car-Door Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
One object of the invention is to provide novel means for looking to a car, a door which is mounted thereon for longitudinal sliding movement and for transverse swinging movement.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for operating the locking bolts of a car door, and to provide a device whereby said means may be held in fixed position with respect to the car.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the preciseembodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings,Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a portion of a car equipped with the device of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section showing the locking bolt and the car-carried means with which the bolt engages, to hold the car door in fixed relation with respect to the car; parts being shown in elevation.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the side wall of a car, the numeral 2 denoting the door of the car.
Secured to the car door 2, intermediate the upper and lower ends thereof, and adjacent the outer, lateral edges of the car door, are bearing 16, in which is journaled for rotation, a shaft 17, provided, intermediate the bearings 16, with cranks 20. At one end, the shaft 1 1 protrudes beyond one of the bearings 16, so as to overlap the side wall 1 of the car. This end of the shaft 1.7 is provided with a lever 18, having an opening, through which protrudes a staple 19, inserted into the side wall 1 of the car. Through this staple 19 may be inserted a seal, a padlock or the like, the construction being such, obviously, that when the seal or Specification of Letters Patent.

padlock is in place, the lever 18 will be held in approximately parallel relation to the side wall of the car, rotation of the shaft 17 being thereby prevented. The cranks 2O carry depending pitmen 21, pivoted, as shown at 22, to the upper ends of locking bolts 23, mounted for longitudinal reciprocation beneath guides 24, secured by means of bolts 25 or the like, to the car door 2, adjacent the lower edge thereof. These bolts 23 are beveled as shown at 26 on their outer faces, and adjacent their lower ends, for a purpose to be described hereinafter.
The locking bolts 23 are adapted to engage the keepers, secured to the side wall 1 of the car below the lower edge of the door 2, the keepers being denoted generally by the reference character 27. Each keeper consists of a base plate 28, secured by means of bolts 29 or the like, to the side wall 1 of the ear, the base plate 28 being equipped with outstanding ribs 30, connected adjacent their upper ends by a transverse strap 31, inclined, as clearly seen in Fig. 3, to receive the beveled end 26 of the locking bolt 23, the construction being such that when the beveled end of the locking bolt is thrust downwardly behind the strap 31, the car door 2 will be forced inwardly at its lower end, into close, intimate contact with the side wall 1 of the car, thereby efl'ecting a perfect closure. Between the ribs 30, the base plate 28 is cut away at its lower edge, as shown at 33, the keeper being open beneath the lower end of the locking bolt 23, as shown at 32, the construction being such that should any material accumulate behind the strap 31, such accumulated material will not lodge within the keeper, to interfere with a proper seating of the looking bolt 23 within the keeper.
A pair of the keepers 27 are located directly beneath the doorway of the car, the construction being such that when the looking bolts 23 are engaged with the keepers, the door 2 of the car will be held across the doorway, thereby effecting a closure of the same. However, other keepers, similar to the keepers 27, and denoted specifically by the numeral 34 in Fig. 1, may be positioned to one side of the doorway of the car, so that the door may be locked in open position, without closing the doorway. It will be understood that these keepers 34 may be multiplied to any desired extent, so that the door may be locked successively, in a number of difierent opened positions.
Presupposing that the parts are positioned in Figs. 1 and 2-, the operation of the device is as follows. The seal (not shown) is removed from the staple 19, whereupon the free end ofthe lever 18 may be swung out wardly, away from the side wall 1 of the car, this movement of the lever 18 imparting a rotation to the shaft 17, the cranks 20 of which, through the instrumentality of the pitmen 21, will elevate the locking bolts 23, withdrawing their lower ends from -beneath the straps 31 of the keepers 27,
whereupon the car door 2 may be swung outwardly at right angles to the side wall 1 of the car; or, if desired, the car door, obviously, may be slid parallel to the side wall 1 of the car, so as to disclose the doorway therein. WVhen it is desired to lock the car door, through engagement with the keepers 27 or through engagement wit-h the keepers 34, the free end of the lever 18 may be swung downwardly, rotating the shaft 17,
and forcing the locking bolts 23 into en gagement with the keepers 27 or 34, as may be, the inclined strap 34 and the beveled ends 26 of the locking bolts 23, cooperating to force the car door 2 against the side wall 1 of the car.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the lower end of the car door may readily be swung outwardly, to permit grain or the like, to flow out of the car. The device, however, in no wise interferes with the sliding movement of the car door 2, in the usual manner. VVhet-her the car door he in open position or in closed posit-ion, the door may be locked readily against movement, by manipulating the lever 18.
It is to be noted that the staple 19 exercises the double function of a detent, for
which the shaft 17 is journaled for rota-- tion, serves to reinforce the door 2 in that portion of the door which is engaged by the staple 19, when the door 2 is slid. Owing to the fact that the locking lever 18 engages directly with the car, and not with the door 2, the door may be held in closed posit-ion, temporarily, by the lever 18 and the staple 19, even though the locking bolts 25 and keepers 27 be broken.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is The combination with a car having a doorway, and a vertically swinging, sliding door, of a projection upon the car, at one side of the doorway, the projection being engageable by the door, to aline the door approximately with the doorway, when the door is slid, the projection having an opening adapted to receive locking means, bearings upon the door adjacent its edges, one bearing being opposite the projection, to reinforce the door and at its point of engagement with the projection; a shaft journaled for rotation in the bearings; a lever upon one end of the shaft, having an open-- ing adapted to receive the projection, thereby to hold the shaft against rotation; a bolt slidable upon the door; means upon the car to receive the bolt; and an operative connection between the bolt and the shaft.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto atfixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
