Be it known that I, JEAN LAFORET, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Valence, Drme, in France, have invented a certain new and useful Shuttle-Brake, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to means for checking and holding `the shuttle when it enters the shuttle box of the lay and for releasing the shut-tle prior to its despatch therefrom.
The object of the present invention is to exercise a variable and progressive pressure on a curved spring fixed to the ordinary boss or tongue of the shuttle box, such pressure being exerted by a roller to which an oscillatory movement is communicated by the connecting rod of the loom.
In the annexed drawings Figure 1 is a rear view of a shuttle box provided with the device which forms the object of the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The invention comprises the coperation of a boss or tongue of special construction on the rear side of the shuttle box with a pivoted arm moved by the connecting rod of the lay and carrying a roller rolling on an inclined spring carried by the said tongue. The checking of the shuttle is progressively effected with the aid of the intermediate spring, and the release takes place at the moment of delivery of the stroke, so that the shuttle is started more gently.
Referring to the figures, A is the lay, B the sword, C the ordinary connecting rod.
I is the ordinary boss or tongue provided, by preference, with an elongated slot I1 traversed by a rod D fixed to the box. A screw E engaging a threaded hole in the tongue I projects into the slot and bears against the rod D, thus forming means of regulating the maximum distance of projection of the tongue into the box, while leaving a sufficient freedom of movement for the tongue in the opposite direction. The tongue therefore does not oscillate about, a fixed point but may take various positions within limits and thus act flatly on the shuttle when it arrives in the box.
Exteriorly the tongue I carries a curved spring K having the form approximately represented in Fig. 2. This spring is strongly and progressively compressed when the shuttle enters the box A by roller O which at this moment moves against the most outwardly curved part of the spring K (the position illustrated in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2). At the moment of the picking stroke the roller moves toward the less outwardly curved part of the spring, its axis taking the position shown by the dot and dash line n2 in Fig. 1, so that it exercises less pressure on the spring K and consequently the pres` sure of the tongue I on the shuttle is reduced or vanishes.
Oscillatory movements are given to the axis of the roller O in the following manner. On the box A is fixed a support F carrying a stub axle mi on which is j ournaled a sleeve m1 integral with a lever m. On the sleeve m1 is fixed a collar n carrying a shaft nl on which is mounted the roller O, the-latter being vertically adjusted by a movable collar o1 with set screw 02. The other end of lever m is connected to an arm 72 having a slotp1 in which engages a pin Q carried by the connecting rod C. The movements of the connecting rod C thus rock the lever m and the shaft nl carrying the roller O. The lever m is bent at m4 so that it does not interfere with the ordinary lever I connected to the protective mechanism.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of t-he United States is y In shuttle brake mechanism for looms the combination of a shuttle box having a slot in its rear side, a movable brake tongue in said slot, an oscillatory arm, a roller carried by said arm, and a spring having an inclined surface between said roller and tongue whereby displacement of the roller increases or reduces the pressure of the tongue in the shuttle box.
