GARBAGEFS'FRAINER.
pecication of Letters Patent.' Patented Mar, 26, 1912 application ined March s, 19111l serial No. 613,001.
, i7 10 all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it knownthat I, HARRY E. HORNER, a
citizen of the-United States, residin 9; at.
l .Syl-acuse, inl the county of Onondaga and ,State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements `in Garbage-Straniere,
of which the following. is a specification.
' This invention relates to garbage strainers, and more particularly to that type whichis adapted to be used in kitchen sinks.
` The 'object of the invention is the provision of a. device of this`character having'a door or lid for covering the same which is automatically raised `when a. garbage re-f' cept-nele is placed thereupon to 'dump itsl contents and which is automatically closed,
A returning the parts to normal when the receptacle 1s removed.
A furtherobjectV of the invention thel provision of a simple, sanitary and cheaply constructed device elnl'iloying a strainer' member which may be readily removed for cleaning andwhich is continuously covered except when matcrialis being dumped .into the strainer. y
A still further object of the invention is the provisionof a device of this character wherein the strainer member is inclosed *or substantially incloscd `within a casinghaving an automatically operated door which .isautomatieally closed innnediateiy upon removal of thereceptnclc being` dumped, so that the contents of the strainer will not draw flics and so that the odors of the contents will not escape.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is rend in connection withl the accompanying drawings, which form a partof :this application, and in which :-4
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the`device. Fic. 2 is a vertical section showing the door m closed position in full linesand in open position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is `a vertical sectional view taken at right anboard, or the like, and still be vertical.
VSecured within the casing 1 at intervals around its interior and adjacent the top thereof are suitable supporting brackets@ upon which the reinforced Harige 5 ofjthe strainer member is adapted to rest. This strainer member comprises a tapering forarninous body 6, the upper portion of which is constructed of suitable mesh'wire netting 7 and the lower portion of which is indicated at 8 and is constructed of a similar Aor otherwise secured to the 'part 7 and forms a continuation thereof, having a bottom 9 to supportthe garbage. This strainer member ror -,receptacle is removably mounted within the casing and to facilitate removal handles 10 are secured to its upper portion and are positioned'so that they may be read- .ily grasped when the lid or cover is raised, as will hereinafter be described, andthe receptaclleor body 6 removed so that the conthe same may be readily cleaned.
Hinged to the rear side ot the casing 1 is a cover or door 11 having depending side flanges 1Q which encompass thel upper edge ofthe casing and in which suitable slots 13 are formed. The lid also has secured in its lower edge areinforciug wire or rod 14 and the under side otthe top of the cover, are rcinfprcing strips or bars 15 whichnlso pert'orxn the function of' wear plates, as will hereinafter appear.l
Mounted upon opposite sides of the casing and extending above the top edge thereof tlmir'uiper ends bent upwardly :it right angles. as shown at l?. to receivethe bearing cratiug lcver 19. This lever has itssides o r end portions provided with loops 20 which surround and :1re soldered. or otherwise secured. to the sleeves 1H. I'llic yoke portion oi the frame 19 forward of the loops 20, when in normal position. is extended from ,its pivotal connection on a`n incline with respect to the Atop of the casing and is so positioned that when depressed bythe weight of the receptacle to be dumped. as will herereceiving brackets 21 secured to the front of the casing. AThe rear end of the frame 19 is be readily supported upon an inclined drain.
tents thereof may be dumped and so that` extending from thc front tothe rear-,upon
'are pivotal arms or brackets 16 which have sleeve 1S of a substantially rect-angular opi fabric, but of a smaller mesh and is soldered inafter be described` is adapted to lie within arranged atan obtuse angle to the forward portion thereof and its ends are extended through the slots 13 and meet in the center .of the cover or top and operate over the VWear plates 15, the casing being cut away,
as shown at 22, to permit the passage of said ends and to permit their operation in the slots 13. The front of the cover is also cut away, as shown at 23, to permit the passage of the same over the brackets 21 and the terminal ends of the right angular extensions 17 are tui-ned downwardly, as shownL at 24, to prevent disengagement of the sleeves 18. The bending of the terminal ends is done after the sleeves have been mounted thereon. In the operation of the device the receptacle to bedumped is placed upon the up- Ais removed from the frame, the *weight of the door will close the saine and return the frame to normal position. This frame ooristitutes, in effect, a bell crank lever or in other words a pairof connecting bell crank 1 levers. o
Having thus described the invent-ion, what I claim as new is f In a device of the class described, a casing, al strainer receptacle mounted in the casing, a cover hinged to thecasin" having overhanging slotted sides, pivot.I inemberscari'ied by the casing, a pair' of connected bell crank levers pivotally mounted upon said 4members and adapted to be operated by the receptacle to be dumped, said bell crank levers adapted to enter the slots and raise the door, and supports for the bell crank lever when operated.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of'two witnesses.
